Mo Grits: I'm waiting for a reply from you regarding why lawsuits would not be in order against the university here. It's my understanding that the first two killings took palce on VT property, just like the later killings. Why would the university keep their campus open if such is the case?

You are correct kimi. The first two killings happened in a dorm ON CAMPUS and all the university did was send out an e-mail warning students. The cops just drove around looking for something suspicious. It was two hours later that the shooting in the Norris building started.

I understand what you are saying but you have to look at this as young students just trying to find cover and safety.

Hard to say what actually took place in there but the #1 rule in that situation is to find cover from the gunman.
It would be very hard to rush a gunman who had the exterior doors chained shut and was controlling the hallway and firing from the hall doors into the class room, especially for an unarmed, untrained, unsuspecting student, who basically were blindsided by a mad man who no doubt spent countless hours preparing himself do do this.

Thank you. I thought I had two different situations mixed up.

as an RA i feel that someone should have been allowed to carry not as many would be dead had someone took him out. Thats what happens when people are unarmed.

The truly sad thing is that this almost was prevented. Not that long ago, to much fanfare, an initiative to allow students and faculty at Tech to possess firearms on campus if they had a concealed carry permit was shot down. The even sadder thing is that future attempts to pass a similar initiative will see even less support because of the average person's inability to understand that it would prevent, not cause, future tragedies.

There were apparently two hours between the first set of murders and attempted murders in the dorm and the series of killings in the engineering building. In that time, how many people could have had an opportunity to stop the rampage if they weren't in a defenseless victim zone? There was no need for the body count to be any greater than one, the murderer himself. (I don't call him a gunman or a shooter. I'm a gunman. I'm a shooter. I'm even a killer when I have a hunting license. But I am not a murderer.)

Say a prayer for the victims. Educate your friends and neighbors calmly and rationally. And do what you can to stop this from happening the next time a would-be murderer decides that the time is right.

When you hear people arguing for more gun control, as will inevitably happen now, ask yourself if their proposed solution answers these questions.

What do you propose to do with all the firearms that already exist? How can you ensure that none of these firearms will be used in such a fashion?

If you can NOT guarantee that existing firearms can NEVER be used like this, then what does it take to stop an act violence such as this once it gets started, as it inevitably will? In this case, the shooter's suicide stopped it. 33 people later...Do you really want to wait that long? How long will it take a SWAT team to arrive? How much damage can be done in the 15-30 minutes it will take them to arrive and go into action? It was obviously too late in this case. Maybe they could have saved the 50th victim, who knows.

Or would you rather have qualified, armed citizens end it before it ever really gets started? Or better yet, prevent it in the first place just by the knowledge that armed people are around.

We have voted concealed carry into law to prevent things like this from happening, but our leaders, who know more than us, prevented concealed carry from working in this case by banning firearms in certain public places. Folks, the whole idea of concealed carry is to create doubt in the bad guy's mind as to whether or not people are armed. When you create groups of people that are known to be unarmed, you are leading lambs to slaughter for scum like this Asian.

If anything, we gun owners should go on the offensive to strike down laws which restrict concealed carry. If left on the books, it will only lead to this tragedy repeating itself over and over.

Maybe we should outlaw girlfriends. We'd have just as much luck enforcing that one.

To me, Mo Grits. Only a dumbass would continue business as usual at a school after two students had been killed on school grounds. What can I say, that's just me. I realize that people today are taught to think things through with logic, debate issues, and conduct studies before making a decision. Lincoln Cultists are especially good at this. Education of American youth today is far removed from days of old - which is one reason why OJ is free, and Al and Jesse are riding high in tall cotton instead of being in the pen where they belong.

I think the question is why the camus would not have been locked down with mass police presence after the first shooting with a suspect still at large? Even if they couldn't notify everyone they could have had a strong police presence. The killer was still loose.

At the beginning of the year they shut down the campus with cops everywhere when there were two murder suspects who were only nearby.

No doubt. Police should have been swarming the place and escorting folks off campus to safety while lockdown was ongoing.

...Thanks MVP...a light popped on when I read where you said "unarmed, untrained". I was looking at this from the prespective of "when I was that age", well, things were different when I was that age in the 60's, very different, thanks for helping me dump that mindset on this incident...[;)]

if the police had locked down the campus it probably would have allowed the shooter to kill MORE people. the shooter stayed on campus and had the police told everyone to stay inside their dorm or classroom it just would have allowed the shooter to find higher concentrations of people to shoot

The dumbass, Mo Grits, the one I referred to is the individual who did not take adequate security precautions to protect the students. Not the shooter, duh!

Lockdown should have occured immediately. Police should have been requested in large numbers to escort folks off campus to safety, IMO.

This is what I don't understand. I watched the video they've been showing, and you can hear 27 shots fired, while armed officers, wearing body armour are waiting/taking cover outside of the building.

You wonder how many lives could have been saved, if they had just rushed in and shot the guy.

Mo, what would you have done? Tell me, please. What would you have done to try and prevent other people from getting hurt, once that two of the lives you are entrusted to look after has been killed by a gunman, or gunmen?

Kimi,.....quit falling into the game with him. You can't win against stupidity, or someone that is simply trying to get attention, by "stirring the pot", as hard as it is to believe, some have no life whatsoever, and will do this for entertainment.

Thank you, Marc. I hope I did not hurt his feelings. I thought that he might not understand about lockdown.
