"Strip search:
what the hell is wrong with these cops
"Strip search: "This is a standard procedure and she was a resistor.""
This is disturbing to watch. I'm surprised it wasn't picked up by the national media. At least they didn't taser the lady. What is going on in this country that excuses can even be made for this sort of thing? What's with the skinhead county police? Most of the police I've known have been regular neighbors. Just coincidence probably but Stark County, Ohio, where this occurred, is where Diebold has it's headquarters. Thank goodness, the local news reporters were doing their job and our laws still allow them to do so.

sorry carrie2, no you don't loose all rights being arrested. 0 -
carrie2 did you ever read this
Amendment 4: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated,0 -
I don't think this was a strip search at all.
Her clothing was removed to prevent her from committing suicide with them. It may be extreme but she is still alive to complain about it.
If you are put into general population (in jail), you are strip searched and then provided with the jumpsuit.
I don't know if you can strangle yourself with a paper gown or not. If not, that sounds like a possible solution, but that would not appease everyone either.
The whole reason for this indignity was to keep her alive, at least that is what I suspect. But neither I nor probably anyone here has the whole story. I am just saying that you should have all the facts before you pass judgement.
If what they were trying to do was to prevent her suicide while in custody, they accomplished what they set out to do.
I know our county jail does not have a restraint chair. They still have a responsibility to try to prevent a suicide if the person indicates they are a risk for that.
In spite of all their best efforts, people still commit suicide while in custody. Maybe they figure it will be cheaper to pay off the lawsuit for the indignity than to pay off the one for the suicide. Maybe it is just a business decision. Who knows?0 -
Who determines if a subject is a suicide risk? Is there a trained psychologist on duty to evaluate the prisoner or do the officers decide? That would give them tremendous power over people in custody. Talk back and they decide you might hurt yourself giving them the right to throw you to the floor and sit on you as they forcibly rip your clothing off to brutalize and humiliate you. Too much power.
Even if the woman was mentally unbalanced there has to be a better way to deal with it than what I saw on that video. That was positively barbaric.
If as Dano and Nunn say this is policy and commonplace then it's the policy I blame rather than the officers.
There HAS to be a better way to handle people. I find what happened on that tape absolutely unacceptable.
Like I said earlier, both sides will present their cases and we'll see what a jury decides.0 -

If you're starting a list of rights inmates don't have, here are a couple more.
Amendment 1: ??? the right of the people peaceably to assemble ???
Amendment 2: ??? the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The sheriff said it wasn't a search.

Who determines if a subject is a suicide risk?
Evidently in this case it was the nurse. I don't think many jails have a staff psychologist. Basically it's just a couple of questions. If the answers are negative, your in the population. If the answers are affirmative you're a suicide risk.0 -
Police State, SS, Gestapo, This is what you can expect to see more of in the near future.Strip searched for a disorderly conduct charge ? And Male officers present ? all involved should be charged with Sexual Assault ! and dismissed from their Law Enforcement positions,And the woman should sue the L.E.Agency,and the State, and be Highly Compensated !!!! 0 -
MORE opinions, mostly wrong, based on a piece of an event posted on the internet.
I remember another video event, involving a police shooting. It was shot from two different angles from two in-car cameras. From one angle, it appeared that an officer shot an unarmed suspect in the back for no apparent reason. The other camera proved the shooting justified. I guess most of you would just look at the first one and vote to hang an officer.
I have known of people to HANG THEMSELVES in jail, after being jailed on a minor charge, such as public intoxication or disorderly conduct. It happens.
As I pointed out earlier, if someone causes the jail personnel to believe he might be at risk, that person is stripped of clothing (with which he could harm himself) and put in a monitored, padded cell with no fixtures in it. It is a normal procedure, if undignified.
Better a moment of indignity than an eternity of death. I bet this old girl's husband would be a lot more peeved if his wife was dead than he is over her being "mistreated."
Any of you "experts" think you can do a better job, I promise that there is a correctional/detention facility within driving distance that has openings. Go sign up.0 -
well all I have to say is that I treat animals better than that even 1200lb+ones that have tried to grind me into the ground.....but after reading posts here for many years..... nothing here surprises me any more. 0 -
And....your LE experience is?
Oh yeah, you're a maint. tech.
BTW....you guys get way too much $ per hour.....
and some how just because a person isn't a LEO means they can't tell right from wrong ?0 -

A while back you said you shoot hunting dogs for hunting. So which is it. Do you really think getting striped of clothing is worse than getting shot or do you just treat 1200 pound + animals better?0 -
quote:and some how just because a person isn't a LEO means they can't tell right from wrong ?
That's not what it means at all. ALL of us, LEO and non-LEO alike, saw a TINY PART of a video of an unpleasant incident in a jail. SOME of us ASSUMED (ASS-U-ME) that the woman was being mistreated. SOME of us tried to explain how this incident MIGHT be part of an established procedure to protect the woman from harming herself and/or protect the facility from damage to the facility, and/or protect the agency from liability should she cause harm to herself. And, SOME of you refused to accept that possibility.
It seemed clear to me that the Attorney General's office was willing to investigate the incident, and that the Sheriff was willing to have that happen. So...let it happen, and the chips will fall where they may.
Whether the arresting officer was recommended for hire is irrelevant to this discussion, since the arrest itself is not in question. Now, if he had removed all of her clothing BEFORE bringing her to jail, THAT would be an issue to consider.
I await a news update on the story.0 -

Here ya go.

I fail to see what that has to do with this conversation. But thanks for the link.0 -

Someone mentioned dignity and respect in jail.
If both of these are important to you, you might want to consider staying the Hell out of jail.
Dignity is almost unheard of in jail, and respect has to be earned.
That was me. And yes, they are important to me. And yes, I do my best to stay on the right side of the law. And, yes, I've almost been arrested twice due to no fault of my own.
We're innocent until proven guilty. Again, you want to take away dignity and respect? Do it in prison. Jail is a different story, that's a holding area until trial.
Respect has to be earned? I'll remember that the next time a smart-assed know-it-all LEO tries to prove his superiority to me.0 -
I believe they were way out of line on the treatment of this woman by what is presented, but still need more info as the media lets you see only what they want you to see.In some cases the victim can easily become the criminal. 0 -

Good for you. I'll take ALL of my rights if arrested, and I'll sue the crap out of anyone that attempts to deny me of mine.0 -

Because I thought I missed something with regard to this particular thread - that perhaps this woman or someone else shot a black man, and that as someone else brought up how we were making such a big deal about a white woman sitting naked in a cell while we were ignoring the death of a black man.
As it turns out, the statement was nothing more than a strawman attempt to derail the conversation.0 -

Pardon me?
I have the right to an attorney. I'll take that right.
I have the right to remain silent. I'll take that right.
I have the right to a fair trial. I'll take that right.
I have the right to not have to give testimony against myself.
I also have the right to not be assaulted by the LEOs for no good reason.
I'll take every damned right I'm guaranteed and if anyone tries to take it from me, I'll sue the living hell out of them.0 -
By the by, folks...Just WHO do you think shot the video? Some outside agitator or some passerby looking for an excuse to crucify some officers?
Not hardly. That camera was held by a SO employee, and it was there to record the incident to protect the agency and its personnel from a false claim of excessive force, ad nauseum.
A tiny bit of that video, not showing any events that led up to the incident, made it on to the news and Youtube.
I will still wait for the rest of the story.0 -
Most if not all jails and prisons video ALL use of force for the same reason. 0 -
Some people here have a wrong opinion about what the jail is like, its an aweful place to be. People get shanked, hang themselves, die, fight, gang violence, it smells like butt and you use the bathroom 2ft away from where you sleep. Your care, custody, and controlled by the facility staff. They say what you can and can't do, its unpleasnt and you don't have a choice, well you do have a choice but you will lose. If you give any indication that you are going to harm youself you get put on suicide watch, thats how it goes. 0 -

I'm tellin you the restraint chair could have avoided a lot of this. Had she been a threat to herself, staff, or was being non-compliant that would have been the way to go. Its a wonderful invention that has a way of winning over the most belligerent of people.
Not every facility has or uses a restraint chair. They do or don't for various reasons. I've used them many times over the years, and have found them to be quite effective.
Thing I missed the most, was not being able to stretch your legs out and get comfortable.
Because of that, I went out and bought a nice leather recliner. [:)]
I don't recommend sleeping on those, to many naked people use them and they really don't get cleaned much....if ever.[:D]
As long as the restraints are checked for proper circulation they appear safe for use from my experience.0 -
I call BS on all of this. My money says that in a few months it will come out that this woman started acting all crazy, that she refused to handle the situation in a calm and reasonable manner, and that she forced the deputies to strip search her the way they did.
There's no tape of what happened before the strip search started, and all the people talking about rape without penetration and a brutal police state and all the rest of it are her lawyers and her family.
I work with screwed up kids, some of them very screwed up. Some of them look like absolute angels, and then they start freaking out and start self-injurious behaviors, start biting and clawing staff and other kids, and trying to run away. When that happens we have to restrain them. If you've ever had to restrain someone, you know it isn't easy and it isn't a pretty picture. The person being restrained is usually quite upset, crying, screaming, and often urinates. The people doing the restraining are usually sweating and out of breath, and are doing their best to use the minimum force necessary and not get bit or clawed. It's not pretty, and if an outsider walks in out of the cold and sees it going on, he is going to think it's the most horrible thing in the world.0 -

And that's what it always boils down to in a cops mind. What's the big deal if rules (no males present) are bent or completely ignored? Screw you, John-Q, we make the effin', so take it and shut up. That's not just wrong, it's immoral.
Ya'll make me sick to my stomach.

Take some Mylanta or Pepto Bismol and you will get over it. And, try to stay out of jail, because it ain't Burger King, and you can't have it your way.

ok for the sake of argument lets just go with this as being "standard operating procedure"
IT NEEDS TO STOP NOW!
there are alternatives, no reason why a citizen protected under the constitution should be treated this way period, if anyone thinks for a second that the mentality of Nazi Germany did not start one "standard operating procedure" at a time your dead wrong, and for the good of the people, put the concentration camps aside for a minute, and look at all the gestapo police, and how every citizen was treated on a daily basis, and how it escalated to total power, and brutality
our police state is going in the wrong direction0 -

I reckon you have never found anyone in a cell hanging from his shirt or blue jeans. I have. It is not fun. [xx(] The suicidal impulse, at least in jail, is generally temporary, and if we can remove the opportunity until the impulse passes, then a life is saved.
I reckon in your world, suicide in jail is an acceptable thing?
As I have pointed out before, we work for you. If you don't like our policies and procedures, there are ways to get them changed. Hell, you can force us all to go unarmed and carry batons made of marshmallows if you want.
Still, I advise all of you to do your best to stay out of jail. It is an unpleasant place, and you cannot maintain your dignity there.
By the way, the thread started about a "strip search," which this apparentlty was not. Strip searches are routine, and acceptable, and a way of maintaining jail security and safety. That's why I suggested that you naysayers go and work for a correctional or detention facility for a while. You would be amazed at what people try to hide, and where, and what they can do with it once in the relative privacy of their cells. [:0]0 -

of course it is acceptable by the police, as i stated one procedure at a time, even a cheap hospital gown would be better than left naked, if concern about their mental state is of real importance then should demoralizing and humiliation be taken into consideration?
in this video there was another female present, she was holding the camera, again if well being was the driving factor she could have placed it in a location to film, and help with no males present
edit: if someone hangs themself in a jail cell its a piss poor design of a cell, and should be fixed
