"Strip search:
what the hell is wrong with these cops
"Strip search: "This is a standard procedure and she was a resistor.""
This is disturbing to watch. I'm surprised it wasn't picked up by the national media. At least they didn't taser the lady. What is going on in this country that excuses can even be made for this sort of thing? What's with the skinhead county police? Most of the police I've known have been regular neighbors. Just coincidence probably but Stark County, Ohio, where this occurred, is where Diebold has it's headquarters. Thank goodness, the local news reporters were doing their job and our laws still allow them to do so.

oh! no tomahawk, "innocent until proven guilty" comes into play now that they may be on the otherside of the law0 -
I haven't read all the responses, and don't intend to, but I watched the video, which appeared to be heavily edited.
That was not a strip search. That was an out-of-control inmate being disrobed for her safety, or so it appeared to me. When they start bouncing off the walls, trying to hurt themselves, or if they are a suicide risk, being put naked in a padded cell is normal procedure. If they refuse to get naked, someone has to get them naked. Ideally, a prisoner would be stripped by guards of the same sex, but if not enough are available, you have to make do with what you have.
I am really glad I don't work in a jail or prison. I don't like to say "never," but I will say that I would have to get awfully hungry before I would work in one.
By the way, I bet there is a jail or prison in your area that's hiring. Most are, because few people want that sort of work. Jump on in there and getcha some of it. Most of us wouldn't last a year.0 -
deputy(that arrested her) failed the psche eval. hhmm.
was not recomended for hire, but the sherrif hired him anyway. Musta been a member of the good 'ole boy club.0 -

I think this thread finally got down to the real point. The situation was not handled well by the "system" at many levels from the original scene on the street to the final scene at the jail.
Was handled badly by underpaid, underskilled, overworked, personnel with poor people skills and a chip on their shoulder.
The fact that you can get people to do that kind of work for the money offered is an indication that the people taking those jobs expect something out of the job beside the paycheck. There might be a few that do it because of a feeling of public service but not many with that attitude last long.
Sometimes what they do is criminal and might or might not be so in this case and many like it. Like most criminal activities most events like this never go to court or even come to light.
You don't want to even get on their radar. Even if you have never or will never commit a crime you do not want to attract the attention of law enforcement. If you do attract the attention of law enforcement do not give them the impression that you think of them with anything other that respect and gratitude.
Do not, I repeat do not lose you cool. Just like you would not try to stare down a dangerous stray dog.
You have to remember that local law enforcement presonnel are most often recruited from the local population and not from the most successful ranks. They have all the same issues as people in general along with a few others because of their job.0 -

No I could not tell from the video, I was generalizing based on my experience with friends, family and others I know in law enforcement. Those who were more capable either moved up to Federal LE or to other better paying jobs with better working conditions.0 -
While the video is disturbing, you need to hold your judgements until the whole story is out.
Some of you guys would take the same approach (ie-hang the cops!) if they left her in a cell with enough clothes and she hung herself. And her husband would be even more upset.
This video was obviously put together with the intent to do just what it has done. To get people all worked up. News needs to be sensational to sell. It may have even been started by her lawyer to encourage public outrage to assist in the case, either to get an aquittal or a settlement. I know, I know, a lawyer would never do anything like that.[;)]
You need to break this down step by step which is what the video fails to do.
She misrepresented her identity to police. If this was done to conceal criminal activity, it is illegal in many jurisdictions and makes her subject to arrest.
If you are arrested, you usually go to jail.
If you indicate you may be suicidal while in a jail, the jail has a duty and responsibility to try to prevent that.
If you fail to remove those items that can be used to injure yourself, the female guard will try to remove them.
If she cannot, she will call other female guards to assist.
If they cannot, they will call additional guards, male if necessary.
If they still need more help, local police are called.
My partner and I responded once to a call for assistance at the jail. There were only 2 or 3 corrections officers for probably 70 or 80 prisoners and they had a looney break loose from them and he had handcuffs on one hand and was using them as a weapon as officers tried to control him. This guy probably went better than 275lbs and was very combative. They still had to watch all of the other prisoners. They had him in a tempered glass cell and he had cracked the tempered glass. And if they sprayed chemical weapons, they may have to empty out the jail.
Long story short, my partner rammed him against a wall with a riot shield while I grabbed the cuff and another (guard) behind me helped me secure him long enough to remove the cuff so he couldn't use it as a weapon. We then backed out of the cell and let him bounce around the room until he got tired out. If you videoed what happened, you would have seen 3 guys going into a cell to control one man never asking him to do anything, just ramming him up against a wall and holding him down, JUST TO TAKE OFF A HANDCUFF! BOY, WHAT A BUNCH OF MEAN COPS!
He got charged with felonious assualt and felony damage to police property if I recall correctly.
Jail is a nasty place. Do what you can to avoid ending up there.
I don't know what happened in this case. But neither do most people here. Take your time to find out before you pass judgement.0 -

You can't stop someone who really wants to kill themselves from doing so. Saying that, you can make their task more difficult. I would have given her a hospital gown. Try hanging yourself with that.

She did. And she also had a plausible reason for doing so, one that could easily be verified by a few keystrokes on the computer in the patrol car.
quote:If you indicate you may be suicidal while in a jail, the jail has a duty and responsibility to try to prevent that.
And, as we see, it really depends on who is defining "suicidal." If someone asked me if I ever had thoughts about suicide, I'd be a liar if I said, "No." Her answer was actually spot-on when she asked currently or in the past.
quote:Jail is a nasty place. Do what you can to avoid ending up there.
Agreed. And oftentimes, the innocent are arrested. I'm not suggesting most of the time or all the time. I'm stating "oftentimes." This is why we're supposed to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
quote:Take your time to find out before you pass judgement.
These forums are not a court of law. I can pass judgement just fine. I find it morally repugnant that, no matter WHAT happened, this woman was forced to sit for hours naked in a cell. Again, she could not possibly injure herself in a paper hospital gown short of choking on it if she attempted to ingest it.
This woman was not being accused of murder, rape, child molestation, etc. She was being charged with disorderly conduct. Despite the fact that she may have acted disorderly, she is owed some basic human dignity, and that includes having the right to cover oneself and not be exposed for public* viewing and leering.
*"Public" does not imply that she was put on display for everyone walking down the street to see, but she was still put on display for anyone in that jail to see.0 -

if she said the wrong thing and the law interpreted it to believe she was suicidal they should have transported her immediately to a hospital to be evaluated by a doctor of phsyciatric proffession. at the same time she would have recieved medical care for her contusions. there is no excuse for this treatment especially for a misdemeanor. these police or jailers are idiots, and i figure will cost there community many dollars of tax payer money in a settlement. they need fired.[V]0 -

Possibly so.
What you are suggesting, however, is that it was right to strip this woman of her dignity in order to protect the State from a lawsuit.
Using that logic, we should turn in all of our guns now. In this manner, no one will be sued for improper use of a firearm or failing to protect from injury/death by firearm?0 -

Most jails don't have "paper gowns". They usually have orange cloth jumpsuits. Maybe they need to get some.
In most jails, the "rubber room" is not accessible to other members of the jail population. It also usually has a camera visible only by the guards.
Police and guards routinely have to deal with naked people. Just like doctors and EMT's. If they don't have enough females on duty, the job still has to get done.
Are there bad cops? Yup! Just like bad doctors, EMT's and even gunbroker members.
All I was saying is, get all the facts you can before you make your decision. Just like cops have to try and do every day when intervening in a dispute.
Would I want my wife, mom, daughter or sister to have to go through that? Nope. Nor would I want them arrested. Or hung in a jail cell if stupid enough to do that. Or shot by some lady that had a weapon hidden in her nether regions when that lady was booked into jail. Or burned by a paper hospital gown that was set on fire. Or any of the thousands of other ways that people have figured out how to hurt themselves or others over the last several thousand years.
As far as the bad ID given to the cops-do any of you think that if I asked someone why they had another persons ID that just handed it to me when I was investigating a crime would really tell me they were doing it to conceal their identity? Or do you think they might tell me that it was a mistake. I once stopped a guy on a 4 wheeler. He had no ID and gave me the name and DOB of his brother. It later took me 3 days to track down and arrest this idiot on false ID charges, after his brother told me he "heard" that someone got a ticket in his name. He wanted to show me that he wasn't the guy I stopped and that someone must have used his name and I should dismiss the ticket issued to him. I knew it had to be a relative of his because it was highly unlikely that anyone else would know his name, address and DOB.
Another ID story...
I once stopped a cab driver driving like crap in Detroit. (imagine that) He produced a Police badge and a "retired" police ID. Only problem was his drivers license stated he was the "Joe Blow III" and the police ID was burned where it identified JR, SR or III. He told me it happened when he was welding. I am 99 and 9/10% sure that this fat, greasy long haired idiot was never a cop. He took his dad's or grampas old police ID and burned that spot in it to use it to routinely get out of tickets. If I would have had more time I would have taken it and called the local precinct, and proved to this idiot that he was lying. But then what do I have? He didn't impersonate an officer. He was trying to impersonate a "Retired Officer". Guess what-no such law I know of. Now, why would I guess that? My train of thought was
1-guy driving like idiot.
2-guy didn't look like cop with unwashed long hair and was only in his late 30's or early 40's
3-how many people leave their police ID out right next to where you are welding and it "just so happens to burn the spot that identified you as being Jr, Sr or the III.
Your story about how you gave the wrong ID to me by mistake goes out the window if I find out you have a warrant or you were the one who started the fight in the first place.
I just tried to use my common sense. Now I am just asking you folks to use yours....0 -

Wrong again.
Unless this jail is in one of few major metropolitan areas, it is unlikely that a suitable hospital is available.
A mental hospital will not accept a patient with a pending criminal charge.
Most jails are equipped to deal with out-of-control and/or suicidal inmates. They are put into special cells and closely monitored. If need be, a mental health professional will come into the jail and make an evaluation and recommendation, and if a judge believes the inmate should be hospitalized, he/she can sign the orders.
Heck, if all it takes to get moved from a jail to a hospital is being "suicidal," ALL the prisoners would suddenly feel the need to off themselves. Now, instead of 200-odd inmates in a managed, monitored, locked-down facility, designed to be managed by a handful of staff, you have 200-odd inmates in an insecure, not locked down hospital, guarded by less than a handful of staff. WOW! How would that work? Or do you want to pay for the overtime to call in ALL the off-duty staff to help guard the now unsecured inmates?
By the way, this is the opinion of a cop and the father of a son currently in the psychiatric lock-down unit of a large county jail in a major metropolitan city.0 -
