This is disturbing to watch. I'm surprised it wasn't picked up by the national media. At least they didn't taser the lady. What is going on in this country that excuses can even be made for this sort of thing? What's with the skinhead county police? Most of the police I've known have been regular neighbors. Just coincidence probably but Stark County, Ohio, where this occurred, is where Diebold has it's headquarters. Thank goodness, the local news reporters were doing their job and our laws still allow them to do so.

    How much of a stretch is it given the emotions most of you expressed after watching this, to consider an equally violent act of retribution?

    Now consider how easy it is for an uneducated Palestinian or Iraqi to strap bombs to their bodies. Not saying it is right. It just is.

    does anyone see the pattern here that the 3 {responding} Leo's of the board actually condone this?

    i think it is very very sad that the spokesmen for the police on this board can justify action like this, even with your responses i have seen absolutely not 1 good reason for conduct as unprofessional as this

    i have told personal experiences here about the leos in the town i moved from, with their gestapo tactics, and how i myself was harassed, and ticketed just a few days after i called 911 about a neighbor for the first time in my life, and many other incidents {btw mine got thrown out in 30 seconds of court but still cost me money and a days pay}

    I have never had bad experiences with LEO's, and I have several for friends, but I am shocked also, at the support for the "blue" wall seemingly under ANY circumstance.

    I DO want to wait and hear the rest of the story, and the outcome of the court case.

    I still say like others have,.......there is NO excuse for treating a woman that was a "victim" that way, and most importantly,........leaving her in a cell naked for 6 hours.
    Anyone that condones that needs a different job, because you have developed the "us against you" mentality.

    I don't know why, but this reminded me of a quote from Lester Maddox. Most people try to forget it or deny it, but Lester Maddox was Governor of Georgia from 1967 to 1971. The ACLU and a few other groups were giving him a hard time about the condition of Georgia's prisons. Maddox said "Georgia doesn't need a better class of prisons. What Georgia needs is a better class of prisoner." When Walter Cronkite put that word out to the world I thought it was one of the funniest things I'd ever heard anybody say. Always remembered that quote.

    By the way, your sheriff is mistaken. Prison inmates have the same rights as jail inmates.

    you cannot reasonably assume that Alpine or any other LEO would condone this activity as presented. Alpine and the other LEOs...and James have indicated that there may be more to this story than a bunch of thugs harassing a woman. You have to understand that the woman indicated suicidal tendencies and was extremely emotional....hindsight is 20/20 but they could not just leave her and expect that she would not hurt herself.

    I am appalled at the conduct of those police people and hope that something will have an effect on "procedure" as an outcome. But, I am sitting here far removed from the equation....and they are there.

Clothing has been used to commit suicide in the past. When she refused to remove her clothing, she was forcibly disrobed and placed into an isolation cell to sober up. No jail clothing or blanket were provided because there was insufficient personnel to post a full time suicide watch.

    That is total speculation, but you are asking for facts none of us have. Now that I think of it, the only thing any of us know is what we saw on the tape and what Hope Steffey's lawyers have told Channel 3 News.

    For those with less than half a brain, well....it takes a time or two, til the message sinks in and begins to register.

    Jailers have my utmost respect. I think of myself as a guy that can take a lot, and still rise up and meet the challenge. Jailers do this on a daily basis.

    For those of you concerned about jail house treatment. I suggest that you stay the Hell out of one. I'm thinkin you wouldn't last 24 hrs. in one.


    Respecting your law enforcement career aside you are flat assed wrong; so is your superior know it all attitude on this issue.

    I have never done a damn thing that deserved jail. But there are millions of instances where INNOCENT good AMERICANS are arrested by attitude happy know it all ass hats with a badge. (some even sound JUST like you)

    I have also NEVER been in a fight. One reason I don't fight is the fear I have of harming others. However; if I felt trapped or in danger no power on earth except my death would stop me from trying to escape or fight. Revenge would be mine, to hell with the Lord. If I was not guilty and treated like that; someday the SOB that wronged me will die by my hand. That is my law.

    no i am not perfect, and that is one reason i have chose not to choose a career in law enforcement

    and yes everyone of them condoned it with one or more reasons as to why that conduct would be necessary, sorry i can't find a reason, our country just got scrutinized for treating pow's better than that, everyday in America there is a murder or baby raper that does not get near that treatment

    someone explain to me what she could have done, spit on them threw feces, used hygiene product, assaulted them, help me out here i can't come up with a darn thing in America to treat a citizen this way


    where was the ol so great taser that is so highly praised to avoid these situations?, just remember the old saying "be careful what you wish for"

    made me sick a bunch of jack booted S.S. nazi...if they were shot tomorrow on the street I would say justice was done..two wrongs don't make a right but they made my skin crawl..I went to watch it a second time and turned it off

    sorry james i have to disagree, i don't care if she has a razor sticking out of her wrist, and a bottle of pills in her hand, strip searching with males like that, and leaving her naked is inexcusable period, mental patients who have documented proof of attempted suicide are not treated like that

    they even could have had 1 more female if she would have put the camera down, seams her well being was so important

    someone said said maybe they didn't have enough people for a suicide watch ...THEY had seven people in the cell molesting her...and you dam shure would agree if it was you wife or girl ..in siox falls so. dak. they strip searched a young girl for being out after curfue driveing a car she was from a small town and didn't know they had such a thing they didn't force her but made to strip in front of strangers when your a teenager is bull...the cops stood up for each other ..curfew violation equals a srip search..you could see by her pictures on T.V. that she was about as street smart as a nunn.. she wanted them to call her parents noway needed the strip search first

    having seen the mentality of some cops around here....in a small town where all things are known.. i have no respect for the ones who think they are above the law....we had one here like that for years....is now sitting in jail awaiting a murder trail of his wife....i could type for hours about things he done and how he acted....and alot of them have same mentality this thug has/had.

    I am losing respect for some here after reading this thread!

    i had cause to call the police because a former boy friend of my dauther called saying he was comming over to beat her up, i called 911 and the 911 operator put the call thru to the police, who called me on his cell phone asking me if i was sure he meant it, i said i don,t know but i didn,t want to take a chance. he said to call him if he came over, i said i,ll call you when it,s over. he was at my house in 4 minutes flat, he ran my id for warrents and wants,and was giving me hell for taking up his time and threatened me with arrest, when the nut case came roaring up the lane at about 80 mph, when he saw the police car he went thru a field to get to the main road. when he was arrested they charged him with wreckless driving. any more i,ll try to deal with things myself. eastbank.

    You will probably never find out about the outcome. The case will get settled without trial on condition that no further details be discussed or comments about it be made by the parties involved.
