"Strip search:
what the hell is wrong with these cops
"Strip search: "This is a standard procedure and she was a resistor.""
This is disturbing to watch. I'm surprised it wasn't picked up by the national media. At least they didn't taser the lady. What is going on in this country that excuses can even be made for this sort of thing? What's with the skinhead county police? Most of the police I've known have been regular neighbors. Just coincidence probably but Stark County, Ohio, where this occurred, is where Diebold has it's headquarters. Thank goodness, the local news reporters were doing their job and our laws still allow them to do so.

small difference you were the criminal she was the victim. that fact alone makes a world of difference.

Not according to the court records:
quote:Steffey, who had a jury trial in Alliance Municipal Court, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
She was found guilty of the disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges on June 8, 2007.
She was fined $250 and costs and sentenced to 30 days in jail, with all those days suspended on condition of Steffey's good behavior for one year.
She was also ordered to undergo counseling, according to court records.
No court or jail records were found for the woman who allegedly assaulted Steffey in October 2006.0 -
OK someone call Rodney King and ask his opinion of this.
If this distraught woman had committed suicide while being held while calming down I guarantee the same lawyer would be representing the family in a claim.
I am of the opinion that once the notion that there was an indication that she intended to harm herself was established, that the LEOs felt they were acting in her best interest escalating to the situation indicated by the video.
Dano and other LEOs: Thank you for what you do. You are constantly asked to do a job where there are really no positive options and you have to act on your judgement. Right or wrong we, as non LEOs, have the option of saying what we would have done while sitting comfortably in our cozy living rooms.
When the "Rodney King" incident was in the forefront, I was wont to tell people that it didn't bother me because I had no intention of running afoul of the law. I figured that peace was established and maintained with a strong and aggressive show of force and if it took beating the crap out of an offender to maqintain the peace, so be it.
I can pretty much assure you (and your wives) that if you mind your Ps & Qs then you have little to worry about from the police. If you want to show your tail, then you are likely to get it handed to you.
Mistakes happen, and there are some idiot cops. There are idiot lawyers, doctors, farm workers and indian chiefs. But you need to know that being aware of your surroundings and in control of yourself is a primary requisite to comfortable and safe existance.0 -
Even if the woman was drunk, uncooperative, or even combative, I find it impossible to justify what happened to her. It was torture, physical abuse and excessive force IMO.
According to the news source, that agency's policy states that strip searches cannot be performed by officers who are not the same sex as the prisoner. This policy was clearly violated.
Nobody is more supportive of LEOs doing their job than am I, but this was a truly disgusting exhibition of unprofessional and abusive use of force under the color of authority. I know they have a very touigh job but if they can't handle a distraught woman better than this they need a different job.0 -

I'm not like Bondai & Bondai and I generally respect LEOs. However, I do not trust that LEOs have my best interest at heart.
If I mind my Ps and Qs I'll be okay? If I don't know the LEO from Adam, why on God's green earth should I trust them? Because they've a badge? Not a chance.
I had a friend who, two years ago, was at least pretending to be suicidal. The cops were called (there's a long story to this that I've told before). They confiscated his guns. I was at the scene from before the LEOs came to after they left so I know exactly what happened.
I spent close to 30 minutes arguing with the LEOs about simply providing my friend's wife a receipt for the guns they were confiscating. I was told that she didn't need a receipt and that the serial numbers would be provided on the police report, which, conveniently enough, wouldn't be available for at least 24 hours.
Why it took 30 minutes of arguing to get a receipt is beyond me. All that had to happen was for the LEO to write down the make, model and serial number of a handgun and a shotgun. The argument could have ended in about 30 seconds instead of a half-hour.
It wasn't that I thought the LEOs were going to keep the guns for themselves. It was the fact that the State was taking property that didn't belong to them and that my friend shouldn't have to "trust" the State to return said property without proof that it was taken.
That's just a possession. Possessions can be replaced.
If you think that I'm going to trust the State to look out for my best interests, you've got another thing coming.0 -

What part of Dreamland do you live in. Ask Randy Weaver, Ask all the school kids accosted by police when their school was searched for drugs, ask the old lady in New Orleans that wanted to keep her pistol, ask the dead guy in California that was playing with a laser pointer, the endless list goes on.
Frankly, the law of the jungle doesn't look so bad to me anymore. Who needs cops? People without the skills needed to survive. Unless we have some kind of reckoning, we are destined to end up like Australia or Great Britain in the near future. The state will dictate your life with police their stormtroopers.0 -

JamesRK do you have a problem reading ? her being found guilty of the disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges was in June 8, 2007.
months after she was treated this way and according to the one report i saw it said at that trail the jury was NOT allowed to see the tapes0 -
I saw nothing that even remotely resembled a "search"...I guess the link changed. 0 -
Saxon: If you haven't been there you are not entitled to an opinion.
If you don't like what the troops are doing in Iraq then go there and volunteer to take someone's place.
If you don't like the way prisioners are treated in jails, then go there and take some's place.
If you're not willing, then you are so much hot air. Just like the rest of them.0 -
Alpine can you honestly say that you would be ok with yor wife , girlfriend or maybe daughter treated this way
if you say yes, then i'm sorry but you are a sick person0 -

I wasn't at any of the Nazi death camps, either, Am I not allowed an opinion on that situation?
Do you have a position on abortion? How dare you! You will never be pregnant.
Alpine, you overstep. I am entitled to my opinion and I can comment on what I see.
Please do not attempt to lecture me. If you want to defend what was seen in that video that's your right, but don't tell me I am not entitled to an opinon.
PS: I can't take an officer's place because I am not a trained police officer. The people on the tape are but don't act like it.0 -

Not so much that I can't get the general gist of the written word.
Losing the fight doesn't automatically make you the victim. She lost her victim status when she became disorderly at the scene of the altercation. Any question of her victim status went away when she was convicted.
At one point when the officer told her to calm down, she told him she intended to exercise her First Amendment rights. She might have been better served to exercise her Fifth Amendment rights.
The trial where the tapes are relevant hasn't happened yet. That's when we will find out if she was mistreated and mishandled most foul.0 -

No wonder respect for the boys in blue is so low.0 -
Let's not turn this into a general "cop bashing" because that's never fair or right. I am speaking of this particular incident which clearly looks bad for the involved officers.
They broke policy by having male officers in on the strip search.
They apparently lied when they said no other videos were made when an officer using a camcorder is plainly seen on the tape.
The level of abuse visited upon a hysterical woman went beyond what was required IMO.
We will wait to see what outside investigators have to say about the incident. Meanwhile, we can express our opinions as long as it remains civil. As soon as it gets bitter or turns into cop bashing this thread is gone.0 -

Disorderly conduct is the "catch all" charge. Every person can be arrested for being "disorderly" when their emotions are running high.

She was charged for resisting arrest, true. But they were called out because she was attacked. So the original call bills as her being the victim. So stated by her cousin who made the call.. Those charges needed to be filed, or it would have been false imprisonment and kid knapping charges. Orignal call to 911 says she was the victim.
p.s. her charges show up as june 07, no charges for the assailent for oct 06..0 -
i mde an effort this morning, and showed he sheriff of my county this tape and discussion. his response was that what is on this tape had better not ever happen in his jail, upset inmates are first given medical care if needed, then a cooling off period of 1 hour in a holding cell, supervised, it is in this cell that they are booked from, deloused and showered and given a jail uniform to change into, they are then allowed a phone call to a relative, and another to a lawyer if they so desire, then they sign for their belongings that have been inventoried and are placed into a cell until questioning, or bond is set and they are released on that bond. he said it is a sad deal that he watched and would ask his deputys for a resignation for acting as such. he said there is a place for a mentally distrought person that clearly needs help and that is at the hospital on the 7th floor, not in his jail. he did say that is the reason he tries to refrain from hiring former prison guards, because this is policy in prisons where prisoners have little rights, but not in county jails.
he said he was glad it wasn't in his county, and wouldn't want to be the sheriff where it happened
i guess in missouri were still civilized[:D]0 -

+1 And that blanketted support brothers of the shield give each other is part of the problem they have with the general public.
Just because they are cops don't make them right is equaly true as the opposite0 -
quote:
What justification is there to leave her in a cell for 6 hours with no clothing or blanket? Is it standard jailhouse procedure to leave someone cold and naked in a cell for hours? Sounds like physical and mental abuse to me.
I guess this question is too difficult to answer for those who are supporting what happened.0 -

Yep. That's sort of like being pulled over and cited for "Driving too fast for conditions." That's a catch-all charge, nothing more.0 -
Alpine- Should I assume the position?
You are not making cops look good with your comments. They strike me as elitist and exclusionary. You definitely exhibit the "us vs. them" attitude that makes some cops do bad things.
We will wait and see what happens in this case. You are right when you say I wasn't there. NEITHER WERE YOU.
In the meantime, I remind you that you do not have authority over me.0 -
