"Nothing here is worth dying for"
This is a popular deterrent sign, often found with the looking-down-the-barrel image of a revolver.
I've always thought of it the other way around, what property is worth killing for?

I would use my firearms to detain a perp until the police showed up. If the perp also has firearms, you're damn right I'm going to shoot first and ask questions later. 0 -

One person mentioned earlier about "the sign." If you have a deadly force incident, I would not recommend having any sign like this put up, or even having one on your vehicle. The media, then some attorney will have to tried and convicted before the trial even starts.
Not that its the best way, but I have a gun, light, a reload and restraints hidden in most every room in my house. I have an alarm and two small mobile alarms that will bark at anything that makes an unfamilar noise. I also have alarm notices in my yard and on the windows of the house. I would never shoot if he is running away, but once you enter my home, I am in fear that you are not only there to steal my possessions.
Will you be able to justify your actions to a jury? That is really the only question, hopefully a jury of your peers will be Gunbroker forum members, most likely, a reasonable person will not be able to understand the bumper sticker on your truck that says, "let God sort em out," or something else like that. I think making reasonable efforts, alarm, yapping dogs, alarm stickers, keeping the doors locked will do much better than a sticker like that.0 -
I would hope my personal moral judgement in such a situation would confirm with the legal definition. First thing is I do not want to kill somone because then I have to live with it the rest of my life. However the instant I am in fear of my life, the other guy will die instantly if I have anything to say about it. From that point on, I was in fear of my life or that of another person. Thats my story and I am sticking too it. 0 -
I think Highball made a good point. When a person steals from you, he is not stealing just the object, whether it was your TV set or your Christmas fund, he stole the part of your life that you spent earning it. In other words, he held you in a condition of servitude to himself, like any other dictator. It's his mentality that makes him not worth his own life, not the dollar value of the goods which represents the portion of your life that he stole. This mentality would have you in a gulag giving him the proceeds of your entire life if he could arrange it.
When the mentality hits the bigtime, you have a Communist, a Nazi, or a Liberal, and everything you have, including your freedom, is disposed of in accordance with the desires of others.
The assault by this mentality, on the integrity of all that another person is, really does need to be terminated at the front door.0 -
Since the goods can be replaced by insurance, the argument that one's life has been spent in acquiring them is nonsensical.
All we're really seeing is people trying to justify their bloodlust.0 -

Not everyone has insurance. Not all insurance pays actual replacement cost. 95% of people will loose in part, or all the value of the stolen articles.
Its NOT about bloodlust. It is about protecting ourselves, and what is ours. No one here is wishing for a break in. No one here is frothing at the mouth to kill for the sake of killing.
You are confusing people who understand liberty for those who love to murder. The is a vast difference Hairy.0 -
When I was stationed in Taiwan, there was an incident where a criminal was discovered by a policeman. In the ensuing struggle, the policeman's weapon went off and the policeman was shot. The criminal ran away with the gun.
Shortly afterwards, the criminal returned the gun with a letter of apology to the policeman, saying that there was no desire to injure him but just to get away.
At the same time this took place, an incident in the US happened. A highway patrol officer stopped a car and was overcome by the other motorist. The patrol officer was put onto his knees and forced to beg for his life--to no avail. He was brutally shot and killed.
The Chinese have a law that says you can defend yourself with the SAME type of weapon as the attacker. If he has a 1" bamboo rod, you can use a 1" as well but not a 2".
As I read your posts, I have to ask myself, "Which society is the primitive one?"0 -

Yes, that about sums it up here in the People's Republic of Illinois0 -
I would say that the Chinese are primitive.
We may have some brutal criminals HERE, but so does ANY other country. Difference being that the media here sensationalises it. Other countries are MORE likely to keep it quite.
With what you had posed, we would have 80 year old grandmas defending themselves with ballbats and kitchen knives, or in some instances fists. What a silly thought.
Defend yourself as you see fit. Me, I will keep packing my 45. To heck with those that pack pipes, bats, and other means of weaponry. If it is a fight for my life, I am going to win.0 -
I think of it differently as in "fortunes of war". If I was confronted by a person in my home I would know they are capable of theft but what are the other circumstances? Are they capable of mahem, rape, torture, murder. How many bad guys are there? I know I see one but are there more? What are they doing? Are they moving into a position to hurt me or my family? I know the sound of a gun shot will get the attention of the neighbors and eventualy LEO. Also a well placed gunshot(s) will eliminate the threat to me and free me up to go protect my family. I would not give any advantage to a burglar in my home because of concern for my family's safety. 0 -
Ive never considered it worth killing someone over. But I would defintly take a few minutes with a bat or sturdy flashlight. and let him know that if he ever came back, I would consider that a retalition threat and shoot him on the spot. 0 -
That is a question I always felt should be asked of the criminal not the homeowner or law abiding citizen.
If someone tries to take any of my property he has just set the value of that property equivalent to the value of his life.
I didn't set the value he did. Sorry, Charlie.

Now..just to set the record perfectly clear.
I am not some psychotic kill-crazed punk.
The point I am making is that some scum-bag stealing MY STUFF has forfeited his life. I may or may NOT take it...but that decision is MINE...and mine alone.
YOur ethics at that time means nothing at all to me..but I guaren-dam-tee you..said thief will remember for a LONG time to stay clear of me...in any case.
You all can continue to encourage thieves..just as you wish. I will not do so.

Insurance has nothing to do with it, because the thief who stole your TV set paid no insurance premiums in the event that he stole it. You did. You lose, one way or the other.
It's the mentality behind the thievery that is the issue. And the criminal mentality is not limited to the theft or destruction of insurable property. It includes the theft of lives (murder), or their effective destruction, as in child rape, for whatever the criminal sees as a personal gain to himself. The only thing that keeps most of these syndromatic a**holes in line is the fear of dying, and that was once recognized by the general population which gave their highly effective counterbalance in the situation the nickname, 'Peacemaker'.0 -
Situation dictates for me on lethal force... let common sense prevail for any that a situation will arise...imo..nambu 0 -
I catch anyone in my house they are done. My home holds a special place to me. It's the one place I can feel safe. Break that and everything is fair game as far as I'm concerned.
Now if I caught someone breaking into my car they would be one wrong move from death, but I would not shoot on sight like my home. The things inside I would not kill for even if I worked hard to get them. Saying that, I think it should be legal to shoot and kill someone over their property. If you think you could be fine with taking a life for that I don't blame you one bit and it wouldn't make me think any less of someone. Personally though I have never taken a life and honestly don't want to find out how it would affect me.0 -
Nothing I own is worth the life of a decent person.
Anything I own is worth more than the life of the POS that would invade my home to take it.0 -

You also have to ask yourself it "Nothing here is worth defending".
Tough questions, but I will defend myself against all who come to do me harm. The property isn't worth a human life, but these days they are willing to kill you for it, so you have to be willing to defend yourself.0 -
Population Control, pure and simple.
Trying to reduce the prison over crowding.
And YES. shoot to kill the retard it helps to clean the gene pool.0 -
It's not the property it's the criminal. Anyone who would steal your things would also take your life if cornered.
Criminals should be killed on sight regardless of the severity of the crime. That's the way I feel. Small crime leads to big crime and big crime often involves or leads to violence.
After 5 burglaries, 2 stolen vehicles, numerous vehicular burglaries, 2 acts of hit and run, 2 armed assaults resulting in injury, 1 act of arson, 1 attempted act of pick-pocketing (son of a bitch stuck his hand in my pocket trying to get my wallet while I was in new Orleans watching a Mardi Gras parade) and 1 armed robbery I have no compassion left in my heart for criminals. They are evil, a cancer on society and need to be exterminated like the vermin they are.0 -

You know, I might go out of my way not to kill somebody who would do something like steal from me or break into my house, if only I wouldn't get sued for beating them mercilessly or winging them[B)]. But, gotta tie up all those loose ends... 0 -

We can debate the morality issue, and debate, and debate.
Once the decision has been made, you may have to change that decision. Circumstances dictate no other recourse.
...and once that decision has been changed, you are protecting yourself by making sure that the intruder won't be available for testimony. Best, Joe0
