"Nothing here is worth dying for"
This is a popular deterrent sign, often found with the looking-down-the-barrel image of a revolver.
I've always thought of it the other way around, what property is worth killing for?

Just bear in mind that most if not all states have laws AGAINST killing in defense of property. If you shoot a thief or prowler and you tell the cops what I am seeing posted above like "It's my stuff and you die if you steal it" it's not impossible that you could find yourself charged with manslaughter. Also count on being in civil court as the widow or other family members take everything you own in a wrongful death lawsuit.
I'm not saying it's right, but that's the way it is. The more urban and liberal your hometown the more likely it is you could be charged. The only LEGAL justification for deadly force is that you feared for the life of a victim (yourself or others).
not in missouri, steal here and get caught, die h[;)]ere
No matter how much you want to shoot a thief, or think you are morally justified in doing so, the law may saw otherwise so be careful about what you blurt out when the cops arrive. Don't tell them you worked your whole life to buy that Caddy and darn it you shot the guy trying to steal it. That may be an illegal act.0 -
I see posts relating the "borrowing" of tools and failure to return same with entering another person's home, uninvited, and stealing or attempting to steal that person's possessions. Apples and oranges. The one is plain rudeness that verges, at times, on criminal, but it's not the same as the invasion of your home (or car or tent or garage or wherever else you, your family, and/or your property are liable to be found together). I have every right to assume that an invader of my home is prepared to do violence, and no one has the right to expect me to wait for proof of that before I take steps to defend myself, or my loved ones.
The law may disagree. The law at times defines not what is right, but what is legal. The law has to be considered in cases where claiming self-defense might be iffy.
The sign indicating "nothing here is worth dying for" is a very direct, brutal way of saying that "your presence as a burglar will cause me to feel threatened, which will result in your demise." Most crooks are too stupid to get the point if it isn't put to them very, very plainly -- and many, even then, don't get it.0 -
Try it and find out. [xx(] 0 -
Whether you kill somebody to take their TV, or kill them to keep your TV, you still killed them over a TV.
You have to survive the encounter, and then you have to survive the inevitable court trial, criminal and/or civil. You better be damn sure, 'cause you're betting the rest of your life and the quality of life for your entire family, that you or another victim was in unavoidable danger of death or grave bodily harm before you cause ANY harm to an intruder.
Just because there are laws on the books in some states saying it's ok to shoot trespassers doesn't mean you won't get put on trial for it, criminal and/or civil. If those laws really provided a free pass to shoot trepassers, bodies of illegal aliens would be stacked up like cordwood on Southern Texas ranches.
I'm-Mister-Billy-Bad-Azz signs aren't going to help.
When I had some charges many years ago, one of the first things my lawyer told me to do was to take the pro-gun bumper stickers off of my pickup, just on the off chance that somebody might see them and bring them to the attention of the prosecutor, who would use them to show what a dangerous loose cannon I was.
Just be smart about it is all I'm saying.0 -
I'm with Saxon on this one. I would not shoot anyone for stealing anything I have. However, If I feel threatened for my safety or my family's then katie bar the door. 0 -
One of the Golden Rules...If it isn't yours, don't take it.
Not much worse than a thief in my book. This of course, is a personal opinion and the law differs.0 -
Seems the lawers and judges are pretty lenient on thieves, LT496..do you suppose that is professional courtesy ? 0 -
You know I have thought a lot about this since getting mugged once I was carrying and the guy had a knife I gave him my wallet, watch, leather jacket at anytime I could have drawn on and shot him would it have been worth it? Also had a female friend with me and I was more worried about just dissolving the situation. The officer that responded ask me why I had not shot the guy since I was carrying told him "Not worth the paper work"
Would I shoot some one that broke into my house... at a certain point yes I would. I would not go looking through the house to find the guy I would stay put and let him come to me I would also inform the scumbag that I had a loaded weapon and if they choose to advance further into the house they would be shot.
But no matter what you plan it comes down to a .01 of a second judgment call do you feel threatened enough to pull the trigger?0 -

Absolutely!!!!!0 -
Nothing tangible is worth killing for - you can always get it back or get another one.
But if someone is in my home by force, it's not the TV set I'm going to blow him away over.
It will be because he has displayed a distinct inability to obey the rules of civilized society and as such cannot be trusted to interact with decent human beings. Today he is breaking into someone's home for a TV or computer - what happens when he decides he wants to get some "action"?
I don't like to gamble with my money, so Lord knows I won't gamble with my safety or the safety of others. Best to show that scumbag the door to the hereafter and save everyone some grief. His desire to take my TV is merely symptomatic of his singular lack of morals and self control.0 -

Obviously, I wasted 40 years working honestly for a living.
What I SHOULD have done is find people that think like this..study them carefully to be sure that they are not home when I get there..and relieve them of their possessions periodically..say, once every 3 months..after they have a chance to replenish my stock of goodies.0 -

When you start thinking your property is not worth defending, then you are already acting like a victim.[xx(]

That's what's nice about living in a real state in the United States. When we had that problem with that guy that tried to abduct my daughter the cops told me "they were sending a deputy out, but in the mean time to do what I had to do to take care of my family". I love this state...and the cops sure earned one hell of a a lot of respect from me that day.0 -

OH! and a never thing...when filling out an app for work, don't ever say on the psychological test that you never have stolen...because you will flunk if you do....everybody has stolen a pencil accidentally from work...
Back in my younger days before I bought my Cross pen and pencil set I used the ballpoint pens at work. More times than not I'd go home with the pen in my pocket. I had a cigar box at home I'd throw the pen into. When the box got full, I'd take them back to work and restart the cycle. Does that qualify as stealing?
Would I kill for my Cross pen and pencil set? I'm still thinking about it. I'll have to let you know later. [:D]

Asked, I tend to give away more then perhaps I should.
Don't steal a pencil from me, however...I take it personal.
I wonder just what part of 'personal property' is so difficult for some folks to understand ? I marvel at the ever lowering level of expectations of the 'common folks' in this country.
The 'ah, shucks'..it is just stuff' mentality out there.
No INDEED..it is NOT just 'stuff'..it is the fact that there will ALWAYS be garbage that feels they have the 'right' to take what they will..from WHOM they will.
A .45 is the best medicine for garbage.
We had a big Swede on one of my ships who came up missing a jacket. He was pretty sure who took it, but didn't want to do anything without knowing for sure. They met at the coffee urn on the Mess Deck one morning and Swede just asked him "Did you steal my Jacket?" The thief looked him in the eye and said "Yeah, I took it, but you can't prove it." Swede said "What the do you think this is, a court of law?" I almost felt sorry for the thief before it was over. A few days later I noticed Swede was wearing his jacket, so I figure there was another transaction after that, but I didn't ask. [:D]0 -

[:D] Good shot HB. Also pretty close to the mark.0 -
What property of mine is worth killing over? Not much. Maybe my sentimental items, my guns, my vintage action figure collections, my pets, a few other things. But luckily I've never been in that situation to have to decide what property of mine is worth another's life.
With that said, if I were to kill anyone for stealing from me, it wouldn't be to protect my property. It would be because they invaded my home with me and/or The Wife present and if they're willing to do that, I'm not taking any chances on what else they might be willing to do.0 -
what would make one assume that the criminal is only after one's stuff???
To me my family is worth killing for, worth dying for, and worth going t hell for!0 -
As usual...so late I get so smart.
I didn't realize so many people don't take it personally when somebody kicks in their door or breaks a window and cleans out the place. "Only stuff", after all....
Actually..after thinking it over.. I believe those folks are riding on the shoulders of those who WILL shoot someone for that dispicable act.
Around here, there has been several shootings and killing for stealing...and that cannot help but cause perps to think it over before that next breakin....0 -

Highball, you're missing the point. When you so cutely said you'd love to steal from people like me, you obviously failed to read and understand the point of my post. Either that or you were so keen to look clever that you ignored the latter 9/10th's of my response and shot your post out.
IT'S NOT THE STUFF I, OR ANYONE FOR THAT MATTER, WILL SHOOT AND KILL OVER.
Now go back, read our posts, - actually read them - and don't respond until you understand them in their entirety.
It's like that MasterCard slogan - you can put a price tag on stuff, but the safety and sanctity of our homes and loved ones is priceless and that is what we will shoot over.
Is that clear enough for you?0 -
Things are things and can be replaced. Steal the life of a loved one and you are DEAD..............period! Regardless of the consequences![:(!][:(!] 0 -
Holy smokes, let me get this straight. A good portion of you would shoot the guy running away from your house with the TV set?
I would shoot to kill if I felt the life or wellbeing of a family member was threatened.
Let's ask the LEOs and or people that have actually taken a life what they think. I think this will be a painful question, but the sanctity of life is paramount here.
Is a TV worth someone's life?0 -
My, my, my...such moral high ground.
quote:safety and sanctity of our homes and loved ones is priceless and that is what we will shoot over.
I gave a Goodly portion of my LIFE..got that ? TIME out of my life...for the things I have.
You moralizing that 'things' are meaningless is..well..meaningless to me.
See..the time I spent collecting what junk I have is IMPORTANT to me..and the stuff is a part of it.
When some perp decides that he will just rip that stuff off..HE made the decision that his life was useless to himself and the world...NOT ME.
"Sanctity of human life" ? What a laugh. These parasites exist simply BECAUSE we have weak people..people unable to bring themselves to do what is right.
Thieving from your neighbor or the guy down the steet ought to be treated as the vicious criminal act it is...a direct assualt on the sanctity of YOU as an individual..and your absolute RIGHT to be left alone.
The proposition cannot be clearer.
LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE...and you the thief are perfectly safe.
Better yet...go next door, where the neighbors believe that your life is worth more then mere 'things'..and they might hesitate shooting, as they agonize over your 'precious life' just long enough that you can take them down.0 -

thank you for noticing, My God is the God of compassion.0 -
No a tv isn't worth killing for but, the sanctity of you home is.
If you see or surprise someone in your home or on your property,
why not hold them at gunpoint until the police get there. Since I'm
sure each on of us on this forum is a card carrying certified gun
owner. Holding someone at gunpoint while making them understand
that you will not hesitate to take their life if yours feels threatened is not only the right thing to do but also the moral
thing to do. Taking a life stays with you the rest of yours even
when you are justified in doing it.0 -
You call it stealing... I call it Counting Coup[}:)] 0 -
"Compassion" has nothing to do with being a door mat for the evil that man does.
Now..just to set the record perfectly clear.
I am not some psychotic kill-crazed punk.
The point I am making is that some scum-bag stealing MY STUFF has forfeited his life. I may or may NOT take it...but that decision is MINE...and mine alone.
YOur ethics at that time means nothing at all to me..but I guaren-dam-tee you..said thief will remember for a LONG time to stay clear of me...in any case.
You all can continue to encourage thieves..just as you wish. I will not do so.0 -
