This is a popular deterrent sign, often found with the looking-down-the-barrel image of a revolver.

IMO no property is worth killing for but anyone who has such an utter lack of respect for others as to steal their property probably doesn't have much respect for other people's lives, either, and would kill you in a heartbeat. How many times have people been killed because they surprised a car thief or burglar in the act? So to me any criminal must be assumed to be a dangerous threat and should be treated accordingly.
If I catch a criminal in my house I will likely shoot him. Not because he is stealing my property but because by entering my home he has demonstrated himself to be a potential threat for violence against me and my loved ones. A criminal coming into my home causes me to fear for my life and safety and the lives and safety of my loved ones.0 -
I traded a good portion of my life for my goods.
Don't want to die..leave me and mine alone. Simple equasion, I would think.0 -

If you break into someone's house armed to steal or cause bodily harm- you should die. If you were unarmed I would probably break your legs or arms for my inconvenience.[8D] 0 -

I would serve the bad guy a drink, and ask him about his childhood.
The exception to that rule would be that anything that is dear to me is worth killing for.

Like Highball, what I have is a result of a life time of working, and I do value most of it. That said it is probably not worth killing or dying for.

I too hate theives. I think one can make the argument that all ten of the commandments boild down to one: Thou shalt not steal (another's life, another's wife etc.).0 -

I agree with saxon. I have a wife and two kids. I don't know if the intruder is coming to steal my coffee table or to abduct my children or do harm to my wife. I'm not about to stop and ask him either.
We are taught in the military what is lawful use of deadly force. Protecting people from imminent violence is one lawful use. Another is to deter theft of a firearm. I would use deadly force if an intruder attempted to steal my guns or ammunition, as my failing to do so may enable him to commit other, more serious crimes.0 -

I have earned all I have!!! If I have something you want, don't even think of taking it.......WORK for it as I have and then buy one of your own. In NC it is against the law to shoot somebody that has entered your home if they are not threatening you, not if they are just taking property of yours. As a former LEO, I feel threatened if they enter my home without my permission.

I wonder just what part of 'personal property' is so difficult for some folks to understand ? I marvel at the ever lowering level of expectations of the 'common folks' in this country.

I live in Mississippi, burglars around here are called "targets". Even if the jerk is still outside (say, trying to get through the door) I can legally shoot them through the door.
If it ever happens the Deputies will bring me a cup of coffee to settle me down and we will sit down at the kitchen table and fill out the report. When the coroner gets here (he is a good friend of mine, and he will probably give me a shot of Bourbon. When we are done they will all shake my hand.

Those that defend the fine art of stealing from friends and neighbors always cause a bit of angst in me...and I watch them MUCH closer then the guy down the street...
Even a TINY amount of soul-searching ought to tell the difference between deliberate thieving..and the absent-minded sticking of a pencil in ones pocket and going home.0 -

I think if you let thieves take you stuff once and not do anything,Then that sends them a message to "come and get it". I would be afraid (IF I used that tactic )that the next guy might be a rapist or murderer.I dont think I personally would use deadly force on an outside item,But would definately hold them at gun point till the law got there.That being said,If you come inside to so much as take a glass of water....ALL bets are off. 0 -
The question is irrelevant. If someone is in my home uninvited, I must assume the worst. It's my family and my own life I am worried about, far less than my property. In accordance with Ezekial 33:11, however, I favor a heavy trigger pull on home defense weapons. Don't want to have an accidental discharge while we're waitig for the cops.
Same goes for incidents away from the home. You can never "trust" a bad guy to leave you or your loved ones unharmed.0 -
Just bear in mind that most if not all states have laws AGAINST killing in defense of property. If you shoot a thief or prowler and you tell the cops what I am seeing posted above like "It's my stuff and you die if you steal it" it's not impossible that you could find yourself charged with manslaughter. Also count on being in civil court as the widow or other family members take everything you own in a wrongful death lawsuit.
I'm not saying it's right, but that's the way it is. The more urban and liberal your hometown the more likely it is you could be charged. The only LEGAL justification for deadly force is that you feared for the life of a victim (yourself or others).
No matter how much you want to shoot a thief, or think you are morally justified in doing so, the law may saw otherwise so be careful about what you blurt out when the cops arrive. Don't tell them you worked your whole life to buy that Caddy and darn it you shot the guy trying to steal it. That may be an illegal act.0 -
everyone needs to know the laws concerning deadly force in their state, in oregon there are three times where deadly force is justified, 1. when someone is breaking into your house (has to be where you sleep, not a separate shop/garage etc... 2. if you feel your life or someone elses life is in immediate danger 3. stopping someone from commiting arson 0 -
Saxon, Mississippi law clearly states that if someone breaks into your home deadly force is legal. In fact, they do not even have to be inside. If they are trying to get inside deadly force is legal. I have read the statute, checked with my CLEO, and a local attorney. All agree with my reading of the law. Mississippi is a great place to retire. Other states have recently enacted similar laws.

Missouri recently put a law into effect that if an intruder enters your home, or even your tent when you are camping, and you kill them you are protected from both civil and criminal suits. What a GREAT law[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] 0 -
I built 2 aluminum ramps for my excavator trailer out of log-truck frame sections 8' long.
Some sorry SOB stole ONE of them (probably $35-$40 dollars worth of scrap).
I think without any pity I could put the SOB in extensive care & never shed a tear but kill him? I don't think so.

Forcible entry is quite different from plain old theft. castle doctrine? Rule 1- never get a man mad at you if he owns large earthmoving equipment. Digging a large hole is fast and durned near effortless![:p] 0 -
The "Castle Doctrine" basically codifies the concept I outlined in my first post. Breaking into a home allows the resident to presume a threat has been made. But not all states have this (mine actually requires me to retreat and flee my own home- fat chance) and regardless of the presence of such a law I still think it unwise to start blabbing after a shooting how you plugged that SOB for trying to take your stuff. 0 -

If someone breaks into your home, shoot to kill.
If someone is outside, trying to jack your car stero...I wouldn't shoot. I'd first approach armed (ready and willing to shoot) and try to detain the perp until the cops show up.0
