Should I have been offended.
At work it's well known that I'm a gun enthusiest. And co-workers w/gun questions often ask my opinions relating to guns. So it wasn't any surprize when a co-worker informed me that he was looking to buy a .22 rifle and asked if I had one I'd sell.
Before I get too far, let me explain that this guy is a real "straight lace" type Christian who has 0 firearms experience.
I told him I had a rifle I'd sell for $60. I had in mind an old Stevens Model 66 that I had bought as a broken project gun and had repaired. $60. was actually less than I had in it after buying parts, but cosmetically it isn't very pretty. So I figured I'd do him a solid and let him have it cheap.
So I take the rifle to work as prearranged. At this point he tells me that he can't just take my word that the rifle is a good deal for him. But that I must allow him to have it inspected by a fellow Christian friend of his before he'll buy it. IMO insinuating that he didn't trust me. Furthermore that it was likely because he concidered me a non-Christian.
So I told to buy his guns from his Christian friend and leave me out of it.
So, did I over-react?

If it was someone you didn't know I could understand. Since this guy knows you and you know him I would not have been impressed.0 -
If he his making up new hoops as he goes along I'd tell him no deal and just buy from someone he trusts.
I don't think offended is something to do with making a deal. If he just makes up rules as he goes along, what's stopping him from a 2 week trial period? And then having a gunsmith check it out? And then paying $5 a month till it's paid off at no interest?

Tough one.....I wouldn't let him take it anywhere (unless you really know him) without proper transfer. I would have let him get a second opinion though. Just my 2 cents.[:)] 0 -

The guy is an ass-hat. It is a $60 purchase! Take it or leave it. I would have been offended too. I might have suggested he bring his friend in to see it though if I wanted to save the friendship. If this were a $500 purchase, I might have a different opinion, but $60 for any working firearm is about as cheap as you are going to get. 0 -

Pistol: must be transfered threw FFL. statute 11-47-35
Rifle/shotgun: At least Bill Of Sale. statute 11-47-35.2

Now he might let it be known that IF you had been telling the truth about it being a good deal, etc, you would have let him had the rifle inspected by his friend, but being you refused, he might say you were lying..
Sixty bucks?...I would have let him taken it..or shown him a blue book etc, receipts etc...YOu did say he knew nothing about guns, zero experience, so if it was you in his shoes, wouldnt you want someone else, a third party so to speak, to check it out?..0 -
I wouldn't have been offended if he had asked for trail period in which he might return the rifle for refund if something was found to be wrong w/it.
It was insinuation that as (in his opinion) my not being a regular church goer, that I was suspect. And that the deal had to be approved BY ANOTHER CHRISTIAN.0 -

Most states do NOT require anything other than being reasonably sure, that you are not selling to a felon, and of course the buyers age.0 -
Sorry, but what he did was no different than many of us have done on this forum, he just wanted a second opinion from a third party that is more knowledgeable than himself. No I would not have given the gun to him, that is illeagle to do in my state. But if the third party wanted to see the gun then he could come take a look at it on another day. 0 -

Well, at that point I would not have gave him the rifle to take with him. But I would of told him that the three of you could meet up and inspect the riffle if he wanted to, at a later time. But for $60.00 it wouldn't be worth the hassle in my book. 0 -
I would have told him he was right not to trust me and that the rifle probably wasn't worth the $60.00, then walked over to the nearest tree and gave it a mighty swing over a branch. But I'm kind of weird that way.

Well first that isn't a very "Christian" way of doing things and you should let him know that. As a Christian I am offended that he took this stance. Now if he wanted a second opinion, great that is just being safe. If the friend happens to be a Christian fine. I would talk to him about it and let him know how he came across. You would be doing him and others a service. A Christian putting down or otherwise making people feel less becasue they are non Christians is not the way. 0 -
Co-worker changed the deal at the last minute. I would not have done that. And I think the fact that it's a firearm, or what religion he is, is incidental.
....probably the type that would hedge/waffle on a chainsaw, drill, etc.

I would never lend a gun to ANYONE I didn't 100% trust. I don't want to end up in the adjacent prison cell if the person commits come type of crime with it, intentionally or not.0 -
Being gun ignorant, having someone that knows guns look at it may have been prudent move on his part. The way he expressed it does not sound prudent- or polite, or well thought out, or very Christian. Being jerk is not dependent on religion. BTW- my CCW here in VA took 3 days. 0 -
