I would say you are 99.9% percent right because the guy should have brought his friend along with him.

As it was he was basically borrowing your property and delaying payment for a questionable reason.

    Did he say
"I want my Christian friend to look at it"?<--uncalled for.
    or
"I want my friend to look at it" (who you know is Christian)?<--he's off the hook. He didn't bring up his religion. You did.

    Big difference.

(He still should not have hedged on the deal, though.) Joe.

This guy is a bigotted religeous whacko. I would not sell him a piece of gum for $60.

It is Very unwise to listen to one side of the argument and draw a conclusion one way or another without even being there.
I see plenty of un-informed bigots on this forum.

The only one I see who assumed his workmate was acting this way because he was a Christian is the seller of the rifle.
he is a Poor businessman at the least.

The Christian thing to do was to give it to him free, you heathen.[:D]

My experience with "churchies" is that they always want to
buy at next to nothing or have it donated. After they get the item
they want to complain about quality & condition after you practically give it to them. I understand exactly how you feel and would have
    told him the same thing.

Nature also abhors dumbasses. It kills them off every chance it gets.

As a Christian, I'll say this much -- he acted like an egotistical ass. But, as a Christian, I'll also say we're all imperfect and we make mistakes, and we can be jerks, just like non-Christians.

Like someone else said, I'd've used any opportunity to convert a gunophobe to a gunophile, my pride be damned (pride is a sin anyway). IMO, it is more important to bring someone into the ranks who might encourage others than it is to stick it to someone, but that's just me.

I can understand and appreciate where you're coming from. I'd've sold him the gun. While it is only a $60 gun, it could bring untold amounts of money in support for gun-owner rights.

Sorry in advance for the off-topic nature of this post, but I couldn't let it go:

Nice use of the double contraction! And correctly punctuated! I don't think I've ever seen that before.

He should have indicated his desire to check it before buying it before you were standing there with the rifle in hand. I also think it was weird and rude to have his Christian friend look at it.

But mostly I'm waiting for someone to tell us they got their carry permit in three hours or less.

Bingo, that Spurgemaster is a smart feller.

All good things come to those who wait![^]

Some guy wanted to buy a gun from you. You wanted to sell the guy a gun. The guy said he wanted to have a friend of his before he bought it.

Those are the facts in the case. All the Christian / not a Christian stuff seems to be coming straight out of your head.

If you want to sell the gun, tell the guy he and his friend can come over to your house and have a look at it. If you find that troublesome, say no thanks. But having a knowledgeable third party look over an item for sale is an incredibly common business practice. If you're getting all in an uproar about that, you really should reconsider who's the unreasonable person.

Sorry,..........don't live in a "Lib" state.
Most states do NOT require anything other than being reasonably sure, that you are not selling to a felon, and of course the buyers age.

Marc, no need to be sorry. As much a RI sux, there are worst out there. We can have anything except full autos. Also, they aren't so bad on giving CCW permits. It only took me 6 months to get mine[;)][:0]

In Georgia there is no wait. I took my money ($25 I think) to the county court house, filled out the paperwork, gave a fingerprint, and waited a few minutes while they did the background check. Once all that was done, they issued me a receipt, which served as my temporary CCW. A few weeks later the laminated official card came in the mail. After that it's just a matter of renewing it every 5 years.

    God bless the Bible Belt!!

To the many of you who say that too much is being made of the Christian issue, I disagree.

First, if Fatstrat thinks he's giving the guy a deal and the guy is looking the horse in the mouth then he might reasonably be a little bit peeved. Maybe he could cut a total newbie a little slack for wanting to have the rifle looked at, but maybe he doesn't care to do so.

Second, if, as it appears from Fastrat's original post, that the buyer specifically needed a Christian friend to look the gun over, then that's an insult to any non-Christian and blatantly offensive. I'm assuming here that the potential buyer made it a point that his friend was a Christian. If not, I recant the whole argument.

Third, if the second point holds, then this is not about Fatstrat having a problem with Christians in general. This is more about a subset of Christians who will trust nobody but other Christians. This is offensive to non-Christians who are trying to make friendly gestures and as others have pointed out, it also seems a little at odds with true Christian conduct.

Finally, sorry, Fatstrat, but I have a really hard time not reading your name as Fastrat....lol....sorry.

NO you did not over react!. "Christian" does not mean anything how days. They claim to be a "Christian" but will screw you in a heart beat. Do not trust anybody that uses their name and Christian in the same sentence! It was best they you let him find a weapon from another Christian, let them deal with eachother. It is not worth the BS dealing with them. Everything I dealt with a so called Christian, I end up regretting it!

Well let me say this. I bought a gun at a very decent price and it was a very good deal (got it fro gb). Had it looked at by a gun dealer who knows before I signed the papers. Another gun I got from gb for a very good price is non-working even though it looks good. I did not have it looked at. So Buyer beware in all cases.
If this guy knows you good enough to trust you implicatively then he was overcautious, BUT if he doesn't I would have had the gun looked at also. $60 is not pocket change to me.

Not really a one size fits all question. It would depend largely on the person, how it was said, etc. I can think of certain people, that under the right setting, or inflection, that would get punched, or worse. Others I wouldn't think a thing about.

I agree. It's very difficult to determine exactly what was said, how it was said, frowns, raised eyebrows, glances over his shoulder, etc. in an internet discussion forum. Based on what was typed above I would not have been offended, but then I am just not very easily offended.

Now, being offended and doing the deal his way are 2 different things. I would have probably offered to let him inspect to his hearts content after he pays for it, and tomorrow you either give me the gun back & I'll give you your money back or you tell me you'll keep it. That way you put him in the same position - what's good for him is good for you. It's not a matter of Christianity or trust, it's simply not good business practice to let go of your merchandise without some security.

And by the way, I am a Christian, and the "let me check with my Christian friend" routine irritates me. "They will know we are Christians by our love," not by our dealing exclusively with other Christians or by offending people (Christian, atheist, agnostic, Muslim, Jew, or any other religious persuasion).
