Should I have been offended.

He should have indicated his desire to check it before buying it before you were standing there with the rifle in hand. I also think it was weird and rude to have his Christian friend look at it.

But mostly I'm waiting for someone to tell us they got their carry permit in three hours or less.

My personal policy is to not do business with anyone who throws religion into the deal!

I would have given him the 22 and a box of shells and told him pay me or next week or give the gun back then . It's only a $60.00 gun.

from your explanation I see you as being offended and assuming it is because he is a "Christian"

If this person is the goober you described he probably was a goober before he became a Christian and being a Christian has nothing to do with the way he deals.
He probably wanted to show his Christian friend the rifle because he probably hangs out with people like him and not because his frind was a Christian.
How some of you made this deal a religious deal I don't understand.
You did say this Christian aspect of the deal was your Opinion and was never stated.

Oh ... And I would have let him have the rifle for a few days to make up his mind.
Then again I am not easily offended.

I'll be using that one. Without the "balls" reference, of course...

When he started his rigamarole, I would have said "The rifle is $60 for a deal right now, and I assure you it shoots. If you pay me now you can take it now. If you mess around any more, it will be $70 tomorrow, and will increase $10 per day that you don't pay me, and no, you can't take it anywhere without paying me in cash. Actually, I really don't think I want to sell it to you, but I've changed my mind - it's $70 NOW."

At work it's well known that I'm a gun enthusiest. And co-workers w/gun questions often ask my opinions relating to guns. So it wasn't any surprize when a co-worker informed me that he was looking to buy a .22 rifle and asked if I had one I'd sell.
Before I get too far, let me explain that this guy is a real "straight lace" type Christian who has 0 firearms experience.
I told him I had a rifle I'd sell for $60. I had in mind an old Stevens Model 66 that I had bought as a broken project gun and had repaired. $60. was actually less than I had in it after buying parts, but cosmetically it isn't very pretty. So I figured I'd do him a solid and let him have it cheap.
So I take the rifle to work as prearranged. At this point he tells me that he can't just take my word that the rifle is a good deal for him. But that I must allow him to have it inspected by a fellow Christian friend of his before he'll buy it. IMO insinuating that he didn't trust me. Furthermore that it was likely because he concidered me a non-Christian.
So I told to buy his guns from his Christian friend and leave me out of it.
    So, did I over-react?

Your act of "Christian" charity was IMHO dissed.

Remember, no good deed goes unpunished[V]

    Screw your co-worker.

Only sell your firearms cheap to your secular friends.

    You didn't overreact.

    1. Insulted by him or not, you are doing a good thing. It really doesn't matter how he receives it, unless you are really doing it for yourself.

    2. Sounds like an opportunity to convert a non-gun owner/voter to a gun owner/voter. Might get some of his "christian" buddies involved, etc.

I've said it before on this forum and I'll say it again: If someone brings up the "I am a christian" during a transaction, I grab my billfold and run like hell. If someone is going to scam you will they say "I am an atheist?" probably not likely!! Tom

Id say sure take it and let your buddy take a look.
But theres going to be a 100$ deposit, refundable only after my jew friend agrees it was returned to me in the same shape as I gave it to you.

Now, that's funny, Tom! Say, have you ever bid on any of my auctions? I am a Christian, you know.

    Fatstrat,

Heck yeah you should have been insulted. He all but said, "I don't trust you and your word is not good enough for me because I don't consider your relibous convictions to be up to my standards."

If he'd wanted to know what the darned rifle was worth, he could have looked at a blue book or something.

Not really a one size fits all question. It would depend largely on the person, how it was said, etc. I can think of certain people, that under the right setting, or inflection, that would get punched, or worse. Others I wouldn't think a thing about.

You were kinder to him than I would've been.

One thing I learned a long time ago is if you give someone a "deal" on something, they will always want something extra because you "sold" them into buying. If you ask a fair but higher price for something you will have a more satisfied buyer due to perceived value and the fact that they made up their mind to buy and you didn't sell them.

Raise the price and let someone else buy it.

You don't have to be offended - if this fellow really didn't know anything about guns, and he has looked into buying a gun from a retailer, he might really doubtthat a gun could be had used for only $60. There might be somedoubt in his mind that a $60 gun would be safe for him to use. He might just be one of those cautious sort of folks who checl out everything before he buys anything.

While reading your story, I was worrying that you would be fired for having the gun at work.

Oh Yeah, My wife and I both went to the City/County building here in Tacoma Washington, and got our CCWs in about one hour - they handed them to us and we left. No Kidding, we went in, went to the office to fill out the required forms on an upper floor, were then diredted to the lower floor Sheriff's office for fingerprints, and the laminated cards were handed to us right there. Didn't even have to refill the parking meter.

Sounds to me like you're offended, or feel like you should be, because he's a Christian. I don't think that has anything to do with it, but you make it a prevalent part of your post. Seems to me he is ignorant of guns, so he has no idea if he's getting a deal. Not because he's a Christian and you're not, but because he doesn't know any better.

It's not that he doesn't trust you, but then again, does he have reason to trust you? On the other hand, he has a friend whom he does trust, so why shouldn't he seek him for a second opinion.

You offend too easily if you expect people who know less than you on certain subjects to trust you explicitly. Trust is earned through many things, not JUST your self-proclaimed knowledge of a subject. He may have needed several other things to help him earn a legitimate trust of you and your deal.

As a Christian, I'll say this much -- he acted like an egotistical ass. But, as a Christian, I'll also say we're all imperfect and we make mistakes, and we can be jerks, just like non-Christians.

Like someone else said, I'd've used any opportunity to convert a gunophobe to a gunophile, my pride be damned (pride is a sin anyway). IMO, it is more important to bring someone into the ranks who might encourage others than it is to stick it to someone, but that's just me.

I can understand and appreciate where you're coming from. I'd've sold him the gun. While it is only a $60 gun, it could bring untold amounts of money in support for gun-owner rights.

The guy is an ass-hat. It is a $60 purchase! Take it or leave it. I would have been offended too. I might have suggested he bring his friend in to see it though if I wanted to save the friendship. If this were a $500 purchase, I might have a different opinion, but $60 for any working firearm is about as cheap as you are going to get.

    Yup, I agree!!

Fatstrat, I am a Christian and I would have been offended if someone started second guessing me about something that I have far more knowledge about. Some people are are just ignorant about certain stuff. As far as saying he didn't take your word, that would bother me. I would tell him " If you don't believe me, don't buy it." This guy sounds to me like he needs to lighten up a bit. Don't let this guy ruin your opinion of Christians. True Christians love you more than you could understand. Some people are just worrysome second-guessers, whether they are Christian, muslim, hindu, or whatever. If I knew you I would take your word as good.[:)] Have a good day and be careful, It's dog eat dog world out there.

Fatstrat, sounds like a great deal to me, if he couldn't recognize it, it's his loss... I would tell him the Gun is now $100 since it will now be "Christian certified".
