One of the things to rember when domestic dogs VS. coyotes, is the domestic dog thinks, here comes another fight, while the coyote thinks, here comes lunch.

+1 That's definately true. I was having BIG trouble with them killing my chickens. I lost nearly two dozen in one week. I got four miniature donkeys and the yotes haven't been back since.

Although, I doubt this will work well in a town.[:D][;)]

We have coyotes around here, but the main problem is from cougars. No one gets too upset if a 'yote sets of a motion sensor light and eats a load of 00, but do it to a cat and you'd think you'd shot somebodies mother.

That is a true shame. People, and their means of getting by are much more important than any dman animal.quote:Originally posted by Ray B

That pic looks like a grey fox not a coyote. Coyote will kill dogs cats and anything else that stumbles onto there path. During the winter mounths it is usually for food.

A guy down the road had his 10 yr old lab taken by a pack and at the time I took these photos I only had my cell phone to shoot it with.
I was working on my pumps and I did not want to do a 100 yrd dash round trip back to the house.

    Poison them

Poison is a terrible idea... Don't do it, especially if you are worried about freindly domestic dogs, you will kill them too if they get loose...

    Stupid idea!!!

Shoot 'em dead and bury them carefully where they won't be found...

Coy-Dogs are mostly a myth, feral dogs (a pack of abandoned domestic dogs wouldn't last too long in Coyote country) are very distinct and look more like Dingo's. The myth of Coy-dogs is also an entity that has been spread by different state officials in their respective divisions of Fish & Game making up focus group tested terms such as "Coy-Dogs" and "Brush-Dogs" in order to try and diffuse the public discontent and outrage with the reality that Coyotes have a tendency to over populate and decimate local populous of many, and in some cases all other, wild game species in any given area during years where they overpopulate and run rampant.

Coyote's won't interbreed with dogs unless raised in captivity, and even then it is a rare occurrence... (With Wolves it generally takes several generations of being raised in captivity before they will interbreed with domestic dogs.) They will kill and eat domestic or feral dogs in the wild. Dogs are just another food source for them. They don't like dogs and won't hang with 'em, they'll kill & eat them. I dislike Coyotes for their wanton killing. The Indians used to disdain them too while praising and cherishing Wolves, they even spoke of Coyotes as being wanton, gluttonous killers, that seem to kill just to have something to do.

The black tip (pic is a little blurry) is a give away of a Coyote vs Fox. If it is a black tip on the tail (it looks like it in blurry pic) it is a Coyote. Also the Coyote's can live with Mange and spread it to other animals (Raccoons, Fox, domestic dogs & cats etc) This animal looks a little mangy - Looks like a Coyote to me...

Its so funny how everyone on this board bashes PETA but yet cries like little girls over there kitty cats getting eaten by a coyote. You guys think no one and nothing has the right to kill your animals and thats exactly what PETA thinks. You guys are all little softies. Grow a sack.

Most of what you said nimrod is true and after further view i now to believe it is a yote. but by no means are coyotes mangey critters. They are however opportunits kill anything of food value that crosses their path yes. In the summer however their diet is mainly grasshoppers and vegitation. In my opinion a yote is smarter than a Wolf because they have never been on the endangered list. Smart critter and it piss most people off that they could out smart them .

    Ignorance shouts while wisdom whispers...

Coyote's are a huge threat to the health and well being of any domesticated animals including livestock and herd animals. There is also a huge difference between animals bread and raised as non-predatory pets that have been purposely taken out of the food chain as to not be allowed to run wild amongst domesticated livestock. The Coyote has self evolved from being natures clean-up crew into a threat to all living things. Coyote's that have become emboldened by man not retaliating and showing them their proper place in the pecking order of the food chain has thusly allowed them to starting using man and the communities of man as their personal hunting grounds for easy non-traditional, non-natural food sources. This involvement is a huge threat to the well being of pets, livestock, and even human populations. And it does lead directly to Coyote attacks on man (small children playing alone in back yards even within a few yards or feet of adults, as they become prey of opportunity to the human habitat predators they have become... An unnatural situation that can very easily snowball into large scale issues.

There is evidence of national efforts to protect and reintroduce predators into areas where they have naturally died off and/or were exterminated by man for causing large scale health issues with populations of livestock and other species of game animals. The result has often been an abnormal reversal of natural selection which has dis-evolved them from natural scavengers to predator scavenger threats to every species of animal they come into contact with, just as non native species being introduced into places such as pacific rim islands and Australia have wreaked havoc with the native species and the naturally selected food chain.

Ignorance also tends to mock, while wisdom tries to educate.

    I'm with ya...

My point on mange is the fact that they are capable of continuity of populous while suffering from mange, and passing that disease onto many other species that cannot continue to exist while suffering the effects of that disease. I have seen many a Coyote with what appears to be a rat like tail having lost all of it's tail's fur and large patches of festering hide, while seeming to be in perfectly normal health and activity.

And yes they are incredibly smart and seem to be able to adapt at alarming rates of intellect and coordination as I have first hand accounts of them running deer in relay in New York state along planned chase routes with pack hunters waiting in very equally proportioned legs of a pursuit route until they eventually tire out their quarry. They do routinely outsmart people, especially those of us that hunt them.

Nimrod's close to correct on the Native American lore. The Plains Indians spoke of coyotes as "The First People" with attributes (both positive and negative) of humans. They certainly didn't revere coyotes, but they appreciated them for their sly sense of humor and ability to survive. They were "tricksters", according to the elders I've had the pleasure of knowing.

Around here, they're targets of opportunity.

Yes, I was generalizing a bit, (and I think I did a poor job of detailing my information) I was referring mostly to some interviews and some of the documentaries I have seen with some elders in dating between 1960 & 1980, there were a number of comments I noted where they spoke a bit more highly of Wolves, and a few of them had made some comments along the paraphrased lines of how the Coyote seems to kill just for the fun of killing, while the Wolf kills when he needs food... I suppose it may not be specifically historically accurate, however, it seemed to represent an overall opinion, that may have differed from actual lore teachings as handed down in their tribes... If I recall there was also a kind of pecking order with the spirit value of the spirit meaning of a Wolf vs a Coyote, particularly in visions etc. They also seemed to respect or revere the Wolf on a higher level of class than the Coyote... This may also be partially an impression I got from the color and character of the conversation as Indian lore was very verbally focused.
