I've said this before, but IMO, Hi Point could be the highest-quality, lowest-priced, most accurate firearm ever made, and I would still never buy one.

    They're just plain ugly.

I'll never buy another one....and would trade my 9mm for a three legged bluetick hound, if I wouldn't end up feeling like I'd ripped the guy off, with the guilt associated with it.

I've done everything short of, well, I've done everything I can to keep mine from jettisoning the magazine at the next to last bullet EVERY SINGLE TIME. That is compounded by a jam EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Mine simply isn't safe to use. Even just target practice is dangerous, since clearing the jam could inadvertantly set a round off, with disastrous results.

On second thought, I guess I could get some use out of a two legged hound, if I could make some kind of little cart for him to push or pull around.

Finally, what do you do with a dog having no legs?

    Don't know?

Shucks, you take him out for a drag.

What can you say about a firearm that requires a hammer and a punch to disassemble field strip it?

seen the firing pin shoot out the back of one, and hit a guy right in the face, the entire thing damn near fell apart first shot out of the box, talk about one shot one kill they are fully capable of that, and to say they are accurate depends on your expectations, if you don't mind a 12" group at 25 yards they're great

you want a cheap drive by weapon they're great too, kill someone then throw it in the river, and your only out a few bucks

Accurate? I bought a new 9mm and put her to the test a couple of years back... This is with out a doubt the worst handgun for accuracy that I have ever shot...If you must have an ugly handgun take my word for Buy a Glock. FYI I did the same thing with the Glock! Same Cal. 9mm... I like to buy guns just to see if they live up to the hype...kind fun!!!
In the old days a gun gave a man a reputation... If Billy the Kid had had a Hi-Point, his reputation would have been "Can't hit a bull in the ass with a banjo"!!!

Could they be rigged for self-destructive failure and salted into the ghetto as a "pro-active" means of crime control?

First, I should make it clear that I'm relatively new to the world of handguns. Even with my limited knowledge, I had no use for a Hi Point based on the aforementioned reputation. And then one day...

Went to the range with a group of relatives. One nephew says since everybody else had semi-autos and he only owns a revolver he's bringing his dad's 40POS. After some explaining (that 40 was the caliber and POS was his opinion of the gun), he pulls out the biggest, ugliest thing you've ever seen - a Hi Point 40. We all had a good laugh.

He proceeded to out-shoot everybody else with it, and not one mechanical problem all afternoon. I was shocked at the accuracy, and at the price he said his dad paid for it (if I remember correctly something like $169 brand new?). We had several other handguns, Taurus PT92, Steyr M9, IMI Baby Eagle, Arcus 94, H&K P7, and that Hi Point was as accurate as any of them (OK, so that's not necessarily a "who's who" of handgun accuracy but those are all proven mainstream products that cost at least 2x as much). It about changed my opinion of them.

And then I read this thread. Hmmmm...

I wonder if it's possible for a real good shot to shoot a poor gun, as well as or better than mediocre shots can shoot good guns? All other things being equal?

They have a specific purpose and design. They are designed to shoot FMJ ammo. Not hollow points or Sabre tips or truncated cone or any of that other stuff. FULL METAL JACKET! I sell them every day and it ain't who you think that's buying them. People know that just about all of us around here carry one in the car. Hey, if it gets stolen, you lost less than $200. If it's there when you need it, it will feel like a million bucks. They have LIFETIME WARRANTIES. If you have a problem with one, send it back. I shared a cab with the owner of the company in Vegas a couple of years ago going to SHOT. I told him that I have had 2 come in with legitimate problems and he said he didn't care where they were bought or if it was the original owner of what, send it back. They will make it good. They are ugly and they are heavy and unweildy. They also give the same end result a 5 or 6 hundred dollar pistol or a baseball bat would if it were in the right hands at the right time. Just my .02.

Oh, no I do not own one. I carry the other ugly pistol. GLOCK. I am a full fledged GLOCKAMANIAC.

I have one in .40 cal. It is what it is an inexpensive handgun. I use it strictly blast off ammo at the range when I don't want to take the punishment of the bigger rounds. It goes bang everytime and it oly jammed once or twice during the first 200 rounds than never again. Would I trust my life to it, no but it would make an ok first handgun for someone without a lot of money. I have shot the 9mm version as well and for whatever reason it is a total POS.

Buddy of mine bought a NIB 45auto at a gun show for $165,we decided to test it out, first 50 rounds it jammed about every other round after that we cleaned and oiled it and then fired 500 rounds of ball ammo through it without a jam,at 50' it would shoot inside an 18" target,I would not want it as a carry gun but as a truck gun I would have no problem with it

Damn 1911 you are one racist SOB! I'm white and I own a C9. I bought it because I did not want to put to many miles on the 9MM's that I already owned.

Hi-Points are ugly as sin, but they go bang every time the trigger is pulled. After 500+ rounds on the counter with no problems I've stopped counting.

They go bang when you pull the trigger and they are cheap! What can be wrong with that?

Blah Blah Blah, I wonder if all these Hi-Point bashers have the same attitude in other areas of life.

Ignorant Gun-Snob 1: I just dont understand it, why do college kids and the working poor own bikes and cheap import cars? Dont they know that Ferrari's and Corvettes are some of the best vehicles ever made. they are the only things id ever drive.

IGS2: Well ive got a porsche but i bought a bike once to see what the big deal was. I fell off of it and hurt myself, they are unsafe!

IGS3: My dads friend had one and the tire broke off and the chain exploded and nearly took his ear off! Besides you could just spend a little more money and get an Old Old Old BMW or Mercedes, why would anyone want something new??

-obviously never shot a hi-point, or will never understand the reason for owning one. And where the hell are the photos of these exploding HPs? quick to post a pic of their vanilla 1911 they bought, but a Kaboomed gun is not worthy of a few pictures.
Let me guess, the kid w/ the bike and the broken hi-point stole your camera?

well screw you too[:)], its a known fact around here, only one gun store now carries them due to the hassle of atf traces, i have never been in that particular store with out seeing with my own eyes a gang banger looking/buying/picking up a high point

anther friends store had 2 on consignment, his confinement cases was near the front door, out of 20+ guns in the case they would walk in, the first thing to catch their eye would be the high point, i saw it 3 times in one day, another guy even made a joke on how they where magnets

dean cascio, you obviously do not live near a big city like sain't louis or east saint louis where there is a drive by done everyday, this may be another gunbroker case of the world revolves around your world

Personally, (and this is my post), I've never held one in my hand. They look ridiculous, but then again, when Glocks came out, I didn't get one becuase they looked to me like the little plastic guns you'd get at the grocery store that shot little yellow pellets. Looks aren't everything.

My process server is a big guy, and he got a shoulder holster for the hi point, and dresses to conceal (yes, he's that big). He keeps telling me how much he likes it.

As far as cheapies, I once held a jennings, that I have never shot. It truly looks like it was made out of pot metal, and the grips are wooden, and were not finished on the bottom. But it did have some heft, and it was, except as above, nicely put together and finished...

The pistols kind of suck. But I guess if that's all you can afford to defend yourself. The 9mm Carbine is decent though.

I am very tempted to get one. I find it SO ugly it is kind of calling to me- "die Aesthetic der H?sslichkeit" so to speak. With a lifetime warranty and their factory right in my home state, how can I go wrong? Minus a blow up and a firing pin to the face that is. [;)]

Sometimes we shoot each other's guns. That wasn't the case that particular day.

And BTW - I resemble that mediocre shot remark!
