So... how did you meet your sweetheart?
Happy Hearts Day to all of the lovebirds here.
My publisher asked for submissions from those of us who write, asking to tell the story of how we met that someone special in our lives. I thought it was a neat idea, so I went ahead and sent in mine.
If you'd care to read about it, you can click here:
http://denver.yourhub.com/HighlandsRanch/Stories/Holidays/Valentines-Day/Story~183048.aspx
If you guys (or gals) want to join in, why not tell your story in this thread? How did you meet your sweetheart? What convinced her (or him) to agree to go out with you?
BTW, if you're interested in seeing what Mrs. SpanielSells looks like, this is your ONLY chance. I never post her photo.

I was flirting with her one night at a bar...woke up the next morning and she was lying next to me. She hasn't left since. She's been sleeping there for 8 years now...maybe I should wake her up sometime.[:D]
Yeah, when they get that way, I like to poke them with a stick to make sure they're still alive.
You're only supposed to slip ONE pill in her drink, not two.0 -

I picked up a catalog and ordered her from Russia. [:D]
The real story is that my girlfriend and I worked for the same company during the summer, between my freshman and sophomore year of college, in different buildings but on the same property and I would go over to see my boss or do something else and I would always make small talk with her. In early July 2004 she mentioned something about July 4th and fireworks and I suggested that she go with my friends and I to watch fireworks and then hang out afterwords. Well we jooked up on July 3rd and it has been fireworks ever since. It has been 31 months of pure enjoyment. I am currently saving/shopping for "the" ring. [:D] We made it through 2 years of long distance while we were both in school. She is 2.5 years older than me and has been out of school waiting patiently on me to graduate and get a job. I can't even begin to verbalize how much she means to me. [:D]
I hope she says "Yes." Great story!
She knows it is coming but doesn't know how/when/where. But nor do I for that matter.
Same thing with my wife. She knew I bought the ring. We took a trip to Wisconsin so I could ask her father's permission to marry her. She knew that was the purpose of the trip (and, in fact, she had me so frickin' scared of what her father's reaction would have been, she simply kept saying, "You better be wearing your running shoes when you ask.").
We were at her dad's house for about a week. She kept telling everyone that yes, I was going to ask her to marry me, but it was going to be sometime down the road. Well... the day before we were ready to drive home, I held out the open box, popped the question and took her by total shock.
I even had to ask, "Did you hear the question?" because she just sat there with her jaw on the ground.0 -
Blind -- double date.
Brother wanted to go out with a girl, who wouldn't go out with him, until he found a date for her best friend. Brother had just gotten back into town, and didn't know anyone else. Brother and I both married our dates from that night. Both first marriage, both couples still together.0 -

I don't have the pleasure of knowing my girlfriend's father, he passed away around 8-9 years ago. Also, her grandfather just passed away. She does not have anyone to walk her down the isle, so, we are going to elope. Her sister just got married and their two brothers walked her down the isle. I wanted everything to be "traditional" in the sense that I got to know her father and ask his permission. I don't want to ask her mother because she would call EVERYONE and tell them. I want it to be a surprise.0 -

Understood. My in-laws are divorced and won't speak to one another. I had to ask permission from both.
No one says that a guy has to be the one to walk your bride down the aisle. I've seen enough moms do it at weddings.
You do, of course, save a fortune by eloping, even if you do it overseas. I have a close friend that went to the Bellagio in Vegas and eloped there with her now-husband.
What's really funny is that my wife (then girlfriend) and I were in the Bellagio chapel about a half hour before their wedding, trying to get some materials and brochures to bring back and leave around her house (she was living with her mom at the time) trying to make her think that we got hitched out in Vegas.
We found out about my friend eloping when we got back.

We are talking about going out west (Montana, Denver, Colorado) and staying in the hills/mountains for a week and getting married. She is going to wear the exact same dress her sister wore at her wedding. So that will save us some $$$ too.0 -

I'm not sure what the laws are like in Montana, but in Colorado, you have to be a resident of the county you're buying your license from. I have no clue what options they offer for out-of-state residents. You should look into that before you wander out this way. I'd hate to see you make the trip and be disappointed.
The good news, however, is that marriage in Colorado is very easy. You do not require a licensed wedding official to perform the ceremony -- you pick up the wedding license, and the two of you can wander off in the woods together (with one witness) and declare yourselves married. You simply have to return your wedding license to the county clerk within 30 days of purchase, and the marriage is declared valid.
We opted for the fancy wedding, though. [:D]0 -

After my divorce from my first wife ([:(!]) I swore up and down that I'd never get married again or settle down and after a few years of wandering around the world as an engineer in the petroleum industry I landed in Northern Alberta, Canada. One of the fellows on my team was a crazy Chemist who told me about his sister who had been recently widowed and left alone with two young daughters (ages 1 and 5). I was hardly excited about the prospect of taking on another wife, much less two small children (I really have no use for kids) but I agreed to met her when my contract was over and I would returned to the States. To make a long story short I did meet this woman and it was love at first sight [:I] but first I had to pass muster with her Italian family (father and five brothers). I made the cut and ended up with a wonderful wife, two lovely daughters and a huge new family. I poke a lot of fun at Mrs. K around here but my life would have been very empty without her and our two daughters because no matter how successful you are and how much money you manage to earn your family is all that really matters. Mrs. K, Christine and Olivia (our two daughters) have made me wealthy beyond my wildest dreams. 0 -

well I don't have a sweetheart right now, but thinking about all the ones in the past... er.. makes me want to barf! but it never started out that way.
sweetheart #1
I was walking through a very crowded social event and somebody grabbed my ass. turned around and there she was. for the next 2 years.
sweetheart #2
I snuck into a very crowded social event over the fence. my tactic was, to go straight to a table and look like I belong there for a while. got to talking to this chick. we went out for a few months.
sweetheart #3
I was at a family picnic, and went walking around in the woods to smoke a cigarette. but I didn't have a light. lo and behold, there's this chick walking around! I asked her for a light. got her phone number too. we dated on and off for the next 10 years.
sweetheart #4
my sister set us up. we went out for about 2 weeks.
sweetheart #5
my sister set us up. we went out for a record time of 10 hours. I'm starting to hate my sister.
sweetheart #6
me and this dude went to the mall in search of chicks. we meet 2 chicks there for the same thing. I go out with my chick for a few months, double dating with her friend and various friends of mine. went back to sweetheart #1. sweetheart #6 tries to lure me back to her small town for a good ass kicking. but I'm too smart for that.
sweetheart #7
I was at a party. me and the dude throwing the party were drinking beers in his bedroom. this chick walks in, she's going to go audition for a strip club later on and she's got her skimpy clothes on underneath. dude's wife was out of town, so he says "will you show us?" she says "promise not to tell anybody?" we say "nooo" so she takes off her clothes and shows us. wow. she leaves. dude tells me, when she comes back, I'm-a gonna have her do a three way with us! you hide under that bed over there, and when I get her in here and we start doing it, you just pop up and join in, y'hear? I said "okay" so she comes back later on that night, he gets her in the bedroom, they start doing it, I pop up (like a gopher or something) and say "hi! can I join in?" she says "promise not to tell anybody?" we say "nooo!" so we do it until we can't do it no more!! anyways, the next day I'm giving her a ride home, she says "am I ever going to see you again" I said "sure" so we're going out for about a week... I find out that she really wants to get with the other dude, she's been calling over there harassing his wife 'cuz she wants him instead, and she's screwed 3 of my other friends already! in a week! that was the end of that.
sweetheart #8
was working nights at a convenience store. this chick started working there. we got to talking. she got to rubbing my back. but she was supposed to be home already. her dad called and asked where she was, I said "oh, she left already" well she was still there rubbing my back, he drove by to see if her car was there. currently a major in the army reserves, he wasn't going to take this lying down. we were in the back room, somebody else was at the counter watching the store. apparently he thought he would do a 'prisoner snatch' cuz next thing I heard was "get off the counter!" he had walked in the door, ordered that guy off the counter, went straight to the back room, bust in the door, yanked her off my lap (boy was I surprised) smacked me across the face, stuck his finger in my face and said "we'll see if you still have your job tomorrow!" and stormed out of there hauling his daughter by the elbow.
we went out for about 2 years. [:)]
I wish you could just trade a horse for a woman like they used to do. it would make things so much easier.0 -
Love #4 and #5. [8D] 0 -
I was working as a manager at a gas station and my wife sent her friend in to ask questions about me. She came by three times that day and finally on the third had the courage to come in and talk to me. We ended up dating then she decided to dump me. Then she calls me back after a week mad because I hadn't called her. So we ended up getting back together once she realized I wouldn't be calling her anymore to be "friends".
Well after a month or so we couldn't see eye to eye on some things so I tried to dump her. She started crying and asking me to give her another chance. I said ok and then she dumped me the next day (told me later she didn't want me to the dumper).
Well about a week after that I had to evacuate a rig because a hurricane was coming into the Gulf of Mexico. The oilfield was very busy so instead of letting us go home they put us up in a town that was inland and ok if the hurricane came. Well we were basically getting paid around the clock to sit and drink. The person on my crew was my wifes best friends husband. So he called his wife to come down and meet us. Well my wife asked if she could come also. I didn't mind but we were avoiding each other the whole night, so I decided to spice it up a bit and flirt with the waitress at the pool hall. She was very receptive and told me to pick her up after she got off. Well this pissed my wife off so she grabbed me and planted a big ole kiss on me when the waitress came back with more drinks. Well we ended up getting back together agian that night.
Well a few months later she decided to dump me agian. The next day she found me in a parking lot with some girl all hugged up. She acted like a lady and didn't go nuts but after about ten mintues after leaving she called me on my cell and told me to come see her. I did and she basically wanted to get back together because she realized she just didn't like to see me with another women.
Wierd thing about dating my wife. I've never given a women another thought until her. Women were just sex to me and thats it. My wife though I couldn't get off my mind for some reason.
Well we were dating for awhile then I was working a hell of a job on this rig, had been up over 2 days without sleeping yet and it was very hot and messy well. Well I hear my name over the intercom to come to the company mans office. So I head up there and he told me I had a call (emergency calls only). It was my wife and she told me she was pregnant. Now I've had women tell me that before and I always make sure they understand that I'd be demanding a paternity test because I always wore protection. Suddenly they've always become unpregnant, but with my wife it was just natural and seemed "right". I didn't get the PANIC feeling. Well our whole relationship we both and always talked about how we didn't want to get married, so I never asked. One day my wife just popped the question to me. I laughed and told her to quit joking around, but she assured me she was serious. I told her to let me think about it. Finally once I figured out she wasn't joking I agreed.
My wifes and my marriage is by no way all peachs. Thats how we like it though. We love to argue every so often, we both are very game. Make no mistake though my wife and I are very happy together and amazingly getting closer and more attached each day. We both consider our marriage rock solid and neither is going anywhere.
7 years later and we are still loving it. [:)]0 -

Shari and I met in the eighth grade in 1972. I fell in love with her then. After I went into the Navy, I visited home and saw her a few times and we lost track of each other for over 30 years.
In 2005, I met a woman that was her niece and we got back together. It's like time didn't exist as we still felt the same about each other. It seemed that we had been living within a few miles of each other for the last 13 years and not known it. We're kind of living with each other now and doing well.[:)][:)][:)]0 -
I was working as the supervisor for the Traffic Unit and was at a hospital to follow-up on a crash. I went to the emergency room desk and asked for some information and after several of the nurses had spoken to me and left to do things, my sweetheart walked out of a treatment room and up to the desk where I was. She worked there as a Respiratory Therapist.
Eye contact, mutual attraction, number exchange, first date blossomed into many more and led to true love. Married her and never looked back.
She is the best thing that has happened to me and I am lucky to have her love.[^]0 -

I was dating a girl at Ball State University in Muncie, In. and would call her. She would pass the phone to her roommate and we would chat. I went over to the University to visit on my birthday. Girlfiend intoduced me to her roommate. It was love at first sight. I was getting ready to dump my girlfriend and had spoken to her roommate about it. Her roommate met me outside when I was ready to leave. I set a date up with her and the rest is history. 0
