The reason for the secrets etc. is only because a man should be a man of his word. So we give our word not to reveal the secrets. What are the secrets? Simple meaningless ones. The idea is that the hardest secret to keep is one that is unimportant and meaningless. Lets say the secret word is "car", what difference does it make if I tell you that? It makes no difference at all, except that I gave my word not to tell anyone. Why because a man should be a man of his word! Our ceramonies are somewhat similar to the Elks, just alittle more pomp and ceramony. To be a mason one must believe in the one true God, "God has 10,000 names and no man know them all". For those of you who don't recognize that it is from the O.T. The Bible is on our alter to remind us that God is watching, and to help remind us of what He teaches. We do not talk about religion because humans tend to argue about it. How can you be a better man if you argue? We Do incourage everyone to practice the religon of their choice because it keeps God in the forefront and that helps us to be better men. We do not discuss politics for the same reason. We do incourage everyone to get involved with good government because it makes our country stronger and better. Because not all Masons are Christian, Jesus' name is not use. The exception is York Rite. We Christians may join that concordant body, if we. choose. There the name of Jesus is used, so non Christians join Scottish Rite. I am not a Shiner, I don't believe in riding pretend motorsickles, so I can't speak about them. People leave Masonry for two reasons. They loose interest or because they are asked to leave. The reason for being asked to leave is because of immoral behavior. They will politly be told that this behavior must be stopped, if it isn't then they will be asked to leave. I belong to two US lodges and one outside the US, at no time has any oath, promise, or anything ever been said or implyed that is against God, Jesus, the Bible, or country. If I ever were to stand trial or did anything wrong, I would not want a Mason on the jury. He would be more likely to vote to hang me, if he ever found out I was a Mason and it was shown that I violated my obligation to be an upstanding and morale God fearing man. For that is what I gave my word to be. 0 -
You need to learn to lay block first.[:D] You need to have someone invite you. 0 -
You need to face-to-face "Ask a Mason".

My great-uncle wanted me to join when I was younger and I know I hurt his feelings when I always turned him down. Sometimes I regret not joining. Seems like all the older generations in my family were members. 0 -

Doug is right, just ask someone that you know to be a Mason.0 -

Just be careful you don't fall out of the tree...[:p][V] 0 -
To be one, ask one. 0 -
My dad was a Mason. He resigned and counseled me to not join. I took his advice. That's the short version. 0 -
Well this sorta goes with the "Should I join a gun club" topic I just read. I am not a joiner. If you join a group, they want you to march to the beat of their drum. I march to the beat of my own drum. The last thing I joined was our local volunteer fire dep't. I kind of got roped into that, and am now looking for a graceful way out. 0 -
Kimber,
So you are searching for more light? Just ask one, and they will most likely help you in your search.
I joined about 13 years ago. I was just your average third degree, and I liked most of the fellows who were in our lodge. I felt all of our lodge members were pillars of their community, and they liked doing good things for others. I demitted (quit) about ten years ago when I realized for various reasons that the lodge kind of conflicted with my religious beliefs. For the most part they are all great folks, but I highly recommend that you do some research on Free Masonry first before jumping into it.

That 33rd degree (I think its 33rd) oath swearing by allah is somewhat concerning. From what I understand freemasonry has substantial muslim overtones. This is just what I've read, obviously I could be misinformed. 0 -
My information is that ancient Egyptian pagan dieties are invoked, and that the 33rd degree initiate is required to swear allegiance to Lucifer. But hey, what do I know? 0 -
Kimbercolt,
You asked the question and Doug gave you the correct answer to your question. There have been other posts that I feel I should respond to. The 33rd Degree is "Honorary" and there is no "initiation" involved in receiving that Degree.
Nothing with your masonic obligation will conflict with your duties to family, country or God. No demons, dieties, lucifer, allah, etc., etc., etc..
I am a 32nd Degree Mason. Now I'm going to quote Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that".0 -
When I first started at my present job (21 years ago) my first boss was a Feemason. He was an outstanding man that lived by the code. I am not a Freemason but if he is representive of the organization I would say it is worth joining if you ask one of the members. 0 -
Never swore an oath to Allah, but everything is based on the Old testament. There is no recognition of the New testament. The bible kept on their alter is never read, and is for ceremonial purposes only.

Masons are forbidden to offer a prayer "in Jesus' name" in their meetings. That is enough for me.
They are also required to place their oath and their ties to "fellow crafts" above any other moral, legal, or ethical concerns. For instance, one example given in the rule book: If a Mason is on trial, and he gives a "high sign," identifying himself as a Mason, any brother Mason on the jury is required to vote for acquittal, no matter what. That is more than enough for me.
I have had Masons tell me, "That is a lie," when I mentioned the above, but if they believe it is a lie, it is because they didn't read the rule book. Morals and Dogma, by Albert Pike.0 -
So whats the verdict then? Is anyone denying what Nunn said regarding the oath that 33rd degree swear to the enemy Lucifer? And so that everyone knows, my maternal grandfather was a life long mason and my grandmother was an eastern star. 0 -
the oath to allah is made when you become a shriner, you used to have to be a 32deg mason to become a shriner, but thats changed. 0 -

Sorry David, you have been misinformed also, and it appears that on more than one issue concerning Masonry.
I have heard "in Jesus name" come out of the chaplin's mouth in a Lodge, many times.
A Mason is taught to do the right thing morally, always. Should I sit on a jury and a Brother Mason was on trial, I feel that I could pass judgement, I would keep an open mind and not go for aquitaldue to him being a Mason. Being a Mason, he has been taught better, should know better and is as accountable for his actions as any man.0 -

Thats what it was, to become a Shriner. I had read about it several years back and didn't remember accurately. Thanks for the correction.0 -
There are many individuals and groups who have an abiding hatred for Masons, and who spread falsehoods about them.
Please don't base your opinions or decisions upon the views of one person, or one group, or one book.
First, "Ask a Mason", he will get you started, and while he's doing that, try to get some objective information, that does not originate from hate mongers.
Masons are good God Fearing men, who do good works for their fellow man.

My grandfather was a Mason,.........couldn't find a better man in the world.
Nunn,.......nevermind.0 -
No one has answered my question yet. Just a yes or no is all I'm asking.
So whats the verdict then? Is anyone denying what Nunn said regarding the oath that 33rd degree swear to the enemy Lucifer?0 -
My dad was a good man, too. Never said that Masons weren't good men, or that they don't do good things; only that I can't live with some of their rules. Anyone wants to join up, don't let me hinder you. 0 -

Sav,........couldn't answer that for you. I think it is all a bunch of BS myself, as I know my grandfather was not a "devil worshiper".
He was not of a "high" order, that you are speaking of, and abided by the "rules", which was to not speak of it.
Everyone has to be afraid of something it seems.[xx(]0
