Drinking
I have a few good reasons for drinking,
and one has just entered my head,
if a man can't drink while he's living,
how the hell can he drink when he's dead?

Reading that other post about bourbon and Coke got me thinking about something I've noticed. I think my generation drinks a whole lot less than my parents' generation, and drinks almost no hard liquor.
My dad had a Manhattan everyday after work, and often two. My parents then had wine at dinner (mom had a glass while making dinner), and my mom would usually have some brandy before turning in for the night. At dinner parties, all the men AND women would drink cocktails.
When I go to parties at my friends' homes, beer and wine are served. A few people have liquor cabinet I can raid for some bourbon, but most don't. In fact, I sometimes bring along a bottle as a hostess gift. "Hey, mind if I crack that open?" Once one of the women, as I was leaving, asked it I wanted to take it with me. I laughed and told her it was a gift and she can keep it, and she looked at me all confused and said, "But how do I store it? It won't fit in the fridge."
I would say on average my parents and their friends consumed around 3 or four drinks a day. I'll have a few on the weekend, but nothing like that day in and day out.
Do you guys see that? Is it a generation thing, that younger people don't drink liquor anymore? Do people drink a lot less now?0 -
what does everyone think about underage drinking, i know its against the law but what is the harm in a bunch of kids sitting around a campfire, not hurting anything, not driving, just sitting hanging out, i dont see a problem with it 0 -
i think 18 is ok but your 16 so no. 0 -
im not 16, how would you know??
stalker??? but seriously i think 18 would be fine0 -
should have been 18 in the first place.
I swear I only got dumber after 21, maybe that was "senioritis" rearing its ugly head [:p]0 -
Akfanatik
if i remember correctly, someone asked yesterday and you agreed. or am i just going crazy at 15 years old
I dont really LIKE it, but if your going to anyways probably home instead of out where you might get hurt.0 -
I survived it ......barely
I remember waking up in my front yard, in the pouring rain at 4am, head spins, vomit, hypothermia...
I survived ,,,,,not every kid would.0 -
Canada's drinking age has been 19 (3 provinces are 18) since the 70's...and they looked at it as at 18 you are an adult, and you can drink...Also if you are old enough to sign up in the service and die perhaps, then you are old enough to have a drink..
Having said that, there are some 30/40/50 year who shouldnt be allowed to drink...[}:)]0 -
BR, what you doin up at 1:30 am? 0 -
If you are old enough to die and vote for the country you should be able to drink in it 0 -
I think what your dad, or mom, or guardian or whoever has to say about it means a lot more than anything I can tell you.
Even if it would do no harm, what good is it going to do you? I'm not going to tell you I didn't do it, but I really don't see any profit in it.
Seems I remember a while back you said you were 16. [;)]0 -
this has nothing to do with me or my parents, i mean everyone in the entire united states, what do you think the age should be?? 0 -
i knew it just wasnt me, i think i read in the politics section, he said he was 16, and blah blah, and blah 0 -

Cant sleep....I worked nites for a number of years, and every once in a while my body reminds me of that...I usually read or do some paperwork, but cant be bothered tonight...
Jacob...
So you are saying everyone should be 21 to be allowed to drink?..
At 18 you are considered an adult,..but you dont want to let an adult have a drink?....You can kill and be killed in the service but you wont let them have a drink?...
You can star in a porn movie, get married, assume all the responsibilites of an adult cause society (law) says you are one, but you still cant have a drink....0 -

No, Im saying I know too many people get killed / almost killed from drinking, or drunk drivers. If your sitting at home, having a beer there is a difference, but if its like, going out to the bar, parties, and stuff like that, 21.0 -
so now youre saying that someone that is 21-60 cant or wont make the same mistake as someone that is 18, im pretty sure most accidents and deaths involve people that are 21 or older 0 -
People who start young are more likely to become alcoholics. This much is known.
Do they start young because they have alcoholic tendencies or do they develop alcoholic tendencies because they started young? I don't think we know the answer to this question.
Young people are known to lack good judgment. Drunk people are known to lack good judgment. Young drunk people are accidents waiting to happen.
If you're old enough to die for your country, you should be old enough to have a beer. Do we need to raise the age for acceptance into the military, or lower the drinking age? I'm not sure.
I believe youngsters need to find a way to rebel in order to define themselves. By setting the drinking age high, we have chosen to make alcohol use one tool in the rebellious youngster's toolbox. I'm not sure this is wise.
I drank when under-age. I don't recommend it. But you couldn't have produced the argument to stop me so I won't try. Sitting around the campfire.....I've seen drunk guys decide it would be cool to walk through the fire (no harm came of it, but it was a close call). Well, if you're going to do it, do it someplace safe, that you don't need to leave. Don't walk through the fire, don't go swimming, don't get into the car.0 -

ERRRRR. Wrong. people that are 21 have more experience driving, and they have more responsibility, Besides, did I quote you with that awnser[?][?][?]0 -
what's "underage"? under what age? I had my first sip of beer when I was six [:D] 0 -
I never experienced 'underaged drinking' - my parents asked me not to and I
didn't.
I was tempted a number of times ... especially when I used to go to TJ for those
25? haircuts - some of my friends did but I never did.
Didn't miss it ... drank socially until I was about 50 and gave it up - just lost interest
and stopped.
Drinking's overrated, anyway. If you need it to appear Macho ... it is a probably a
sign of a problem.

Stating something like this is a sign of a problem [:p]0 -
I suppose it is - if you think it is, I suppose it is - but rest assured I'm
doing OK. I've seen too many folks in a lifetime who are not OK because
of it - I'd imagine most folks have - just eliminate drunk drivers and we'd
all have a few more friends around us.

zipperzap -- I don't get what you're trying to say. Drunk drivers have nothing to do with drunk driving or alcoholism. It's not alcohol's fault, is it? The whole argument sounds like that guns kill people, ya know? 0 -

I also think pot should be legal also if alcohal should is legal. Pot has alot more mellowing effect and people get "liquid courage" except with food when smoking pot. I do not smoke pot myself either it's just logical.0 -

On that note, who will decide what's legal and what's not and what judgment and parameters would be used to make such decision?
And for the record: I am all up for government doing only its job and not mingling with personal lives and choices of its constituencies.0 -

Ok on that note of your note who decided alcohal was "ok"? Cigs, alcohal, dope of any kind are all not good for us.
I say pot because folks smoking dope don't get nearly as voilent or out of control as folks drinking.0 -

Alcohol has been outlawed once already. Tobacco is slowly being outlawed - just a matter of time. And it's not drinkers and smokers who've voted on it.

I don't disagree and most of people I know including myself that have smoked pot on more or less regular basis at some point have quit it and don't touch it all anymore and not because they've moved onto crack etc.0 -

But they are legal. Has pot ever been legal? I'm not honestly sure, but I don't think so. I'm not talking about hemp either, I'm talking about pot as mind altering substance.0 -

Yes it has been, so was heroin and cocaine.0
