Emergency brake levers, automatic stick shift, master cylinder under the floorboard, seven window cab, vacuum wipers, six volt batteries and polarizing generators. Most of todays youth would think this is all fictional. How about no turn signals, no seat belts, metal dashboards, no fm radios if you had one at all. No air conditioning and gasoline heaters. Truck boxes had wooden beds, tailgates were held shut with hooks attached to a chain. Damn, things were simple when I was young.

Fireball Roberts. And don't forget Smokey Yunick. 'Ol Smokey was a master at deception. He could get away with more track violations on his vehicle than anyone. The race officials never caught them. Oh, the days. Joe

I read onetime that smoky had enough fuel line running around the car that he would hold an extra 2-3 gallons of fuel!! He was also disqualified a number of times even though no violations were found!! They were just sure he was cheating somehow!! Most rules in racing were put in because of Smokey!! Gotta love the guy!

One of the stories was that Smokey was called into tech once again for some sort of cheating violation. Someone said that he was able to hold to much fuel in the car so the tech department started tearing every piece of fuel line, the fuel cell and the fuel pump out of the car. With all of this stuff laying on the floor the tech guys were sitting there scratching their heads and not finding anything. Smokey walks up says "I told you guys that you wouldn't find anything", then he hops in the car, starts it and drives off, leaving all the stuff on the ground!!!!

I remember seeing a cartoon, I believe in the early 70's, either in National Dragster or one of the hot rod magazines. It depicted Don Garlits Top Fuel dragster at that time with a tech inspector setting on one of the front wheels with the caption that went something like "He wouldn't know cheating if it bite him in the butt". If I remember correctly the innovative Garlits had staggered the front wheels slightly, which enabled him to stage deeper into the starting beams without red lighting, gave him a starting line advantage, and allowed him to trip the finish beam a little sooner than the competition. I think there was a rule change shortly thereafter!

I remember that guy! I read that he balled up the front end so many times, he just started using exhaust tubing and hose clamps to rebuild it. There's one famous picture of him sliding his altered sideways, with the front wheels cranked and those big huge meats in the back leaning over, and if you look close you can see he's only steering with one hand!

Slightly off-topic (two wheels instead of four). Choppers that were actually built/modified by their owners and didn't cost more money than I bring home in a year. And does anyone remember Arlen Ness? Way before Jesse James or the Orange County Choppers crew, he was da man.

He also allegedly put an inflated basketball in the gastank, to that in prerace inspection, it would show to hold the same amount as the other cars. At the first pit stop, the crew would deflate the thing, and they would get away with an extra gallon of fuel per fillup.

Facinating character. Holds the patent on tons of machines and parts. I always wanted to read his book "Best Damn Garage in Town."

Gran Turismo Olomogato by Ferrari, and it meant Homologated Grand Touring. Homologated essentially (in this case) means "accepted into a (racing) class".

    You're welcome.
