    I remember that guy! I read that he balled up the front end so many times, he just started using exhaust tubing and hose clamps to rebuild it. There's one famous picture of him sliding his altered sideways, with the front wheels cranked and those big huge meats in the back leaning over, and if you look close you can see he's only steering with one hand!

    If you look closley at the pictures of Willy diving you'll notice that he used a round steering wheel, not a butterfly like most drivers. He would drive with one hand while bracing him self with the other by reaching outside the car.

    Your correct on that Doug, Pure Hell was Hemi powered and Pure Heaven was powered by a Big Block Chevy (the rat that scared the elephant). There is a famous picture that sits in the corprete headquartes of the NHRA of these two cars racing called "Between Heaven and Hell". Both Cars now reside at the NHRA Musuem in Pomona, CA.

    Marion Lee "Mickey" Thompson (born December 7, 1928 - died March 16, 1988) was an American off-road racing legend. He won many championships as a racer, and later formed sanctioning bodies SCORE International and Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group (MTEG). He also raced in dragsters and land speed record automobiles.

    Thompson was born in Alhambra, California. He was known universally as "Mickey." In his early twenties, he worked for the Los Angeles Times newspaper while becoming involved in the new sport of drag racing. He developed a brilliant career as both a driver and an innovative automotive technician. As well as a drag racing champion, Mickey Thompson set more speed and endurance records than any other man in automotive history. He is credited with designing and building the first slingshot dragster and for creating the signal starting and foul light systems used in drag racing. In 1968, he redesigned the Funny Car, and his vehicle went on to win the 1969 NHRA Springnationals and Nationals for driver Danny Ongais.

Ed was complaining about the condition of the "historic" hotel that he was put into, basically he said that not even Rat Fink would sty in that rat infested heap of a cockroach dung pile. I offered Ed a room at my house and told him that my wife would even make him a big breakfast everymorning. Ed agreed that we would talk about it later for next years show. But we never did talk about it as Ed died 3 months later.

    rules said 'May cut fender openings for tire clearance' smokey shows up with them uncut...they say 'you can't do that!' he says 'MAY be cut for tire clearance...I didn't cut them...so what?' Then his drive goes out and poles it, and he cuts them to regulation....again...'you can't do that!'....'See says right here MAY....' :)

    Exhaust must exit the body behind driver.....NASCAR rule stated... so old Smoke runs then right out the back of the car....anyone that drafted his driver? their car overheated.....

    When Potter would bring the widowmaker up to the line he would set the rear tire up on a retractable stand, he would them rev that little chevy 283 to 7000 RPM, the rear tire would almost be comming apart at this time. when the tree went green he would just push the bike forward off the stand and hang on. The two wheels on his bike were never pointed in the same direction as he made his way down the track with tire smoke filling the air. There was a reason they calld him the Michagan Madman!

    PUSH STARTS: The Surfers....Posted on 11/22/00

    Okay, I'm not sure if I ever forwarded this to the group before but here goes. This is from Tom Jobe. Not exactly a push start story but it's a "push" story. Riverside 1965.
    The Riverside drags were held on the back straight of the "road course", the strip went backwards to the normal direction of the track. Many of the teams used the "road course" pit lane over on the other side of "turn nine" to work on their cars. You would pull off to one side and work on your car, then push down the middle of the pit lane to go back to the starting line. - Adam Sorokin

    OK..., it was a nice warm sunny day, we finish working on our car, and start to push down the lane. Sorokin is in the dragster, Skinner is driving the 55 Chevy push car and I'm riding "shotgun", when this very lovely young lady, who is obviously getting a good start on her summer tan, walks across the lane in front of us. All three of us are staring at this wonderful sight while the dragster runs into the back of Ed Pinks brand new "high buck" Dodge station wagon. When the dragster hits, it knocks Skinner forward and he hits the gas on the push car and squashes the dragster further into Ed's new wagon. Our "wadded up" dragster now has the front wheels almost back up
    on top of the blower when it finally stops. We are still looking at this young lady as it all "crushes" to a stop, she looks back over her shoulder and smiles, and continues on her way. Pink was working on his dragster at the time and saw this whole deal go down, and to Pinky's eternal credit, he didn't say a word to us, he just shook his head and looked at the ground. He knew his car had just been trashed by something as natural as gravity.., young boys and young girls... He knew we didn't have two nickels to rub together and didn't even ask us pay for the damage that surely was worth more than everything the three of us owned. Fortunately we didn't hit his race car or anybody, the only damage was to his wagon and our dragster.

    Doug, Skinner and Jobe were big fans of the 392 Hemi, of couse by '67 most of the big names had switched over to the hemi with only a few clinging onto the "others". There is just someing about Nitro and Blowers that really wakes up the old elephant.
