Welfare
A Guy walked into the local welfare office, marched straight up to the counter and said, "Hi. You know, I just HATE drawing welfare.
I'd really rather have a job."
The social worker behind the counter said, "Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who
wants a chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter you'll have to drive around in his Mercedes, and he'll supply all of your clothes.
Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be expected to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips and you will have to
satisfy her sexual urges.
You'll be provided a two-bedroom apartment above the garage. The salary is $200,000 a year."
The guy, wide-eyed, said, "You're bullshi-t--in' me!"
The social worker said, "Yeah, well . . . you started it." [:D]

Seems like alot of people are thinking when people complain about welfare they are talking about social security, unemployment, ect.
I think people are talking about able bodied people that stay on welfare for generations often while selling dope out of the back of the home. Social Security was worked for, unemployment is also. I have no issue with either unless I don't get what I pay in.
quote: i think they should have to do public works projects, get em out there pickin up litter, planting plants along the medians, maybe just something like 6 hours a day.
I agree with this idea. Also all the jobs that "Americans don't want to do" have these folks do it. If they are leaning on the goverment and won't stand on their own two feet don't you think they should be uncomfortable while doing it to try and give them the want to find something better? If they refuse to do those jobs, thats fine starve then.
Agian I'm not talking about most disabled or elderly, just the pure leechs of which we have many.0 -

I am currently on unemployment. After i was HONORABLY discharged from the Marine Corps i filed for unemployment to help cover my bills until i find suitable work... the money that i get was paid through a tax, paid by the employer to the govornment, then i get a slice when i file the claim, its not costing you a penny. Is that wrong? i admit i almost thought about not filing for unemployment because, i fundamentally agree with you about government handouts, but i filed anyways because i simply needed the money. I guess i've changed my mind about TEMPORARY government assistance, its the long term "welfare" that i still have a problem with.
We're you an Officer or enlisted? If enlisted use that GI Bill and go to school. It's a good chunk of money there!
I've been laid off a few times and have taken Unemployment. If my employer didn't want to pay my unemployment they shouldn't have laid me off. I say stick em for it. [}:)]0 -

I do believe this: If the Christian churches in America were doing their jobs, as exemplified by the first century churches, there would be no need for any sort of government-run welfare. Imagine that.
Yep, if the government wasn't stealing around 50% of the GNP through various taxes at all levels then people would be able to donate more to their churches who would in turn all but eliminate the need for government "welfare" programs.0 -
enlisted. I plan on using the GI bill to go to school, its just that i got "home" to take a full load this summer, so im only taking one class and just paying for it myself, this fall though, its GI bill time 0 -
Obviously welfare is out of control, but disability is a different story if they are truly unable to work. 0 -
It might be cheaper to pay some people to stay home then to have society to pay for crimes committed by people who have no job and no welfare check. 0 -

Hey the USA does the same thing on the World scale with other countries.

Instead of complaining bout unemployed eating your taxmoney...
How about look around in your neighborhood and see how u could help some unemployed to get a job...
But it's always non of my business...I dont care...I'm busy with my own life....But complaining always seemes darn easy to do.
Commie BS. Why the heck do I have to help anybody? The world would be better off if everyone was self-reliant, but what do I know, they have socialism in sweden.0 -

I must disagree. I studied the welfare system (briefly) in an economics management class in grad school and it helps this society more than you think. There is also a lot less abuse of the system that you think. In any gov't program like that, there will be abuses, but the benefits of the program far outway the abuses.
Also welfare does not cost that much. If you compare it to what would happen if there were no welfare system, it is miniscule.
Look to any poor African or Southeast Asian nation to see what would happen with no welfare system.
What was the name of the school and name of the professor. you people need to get your heads outta your @sses and realize that you're simply being conditioned for socialism. But yeah, I am a paranoid delusional freak, I wonder how many people in 1910's russia were paranoid delusional freaks too...0 -

So that makes it right? I don't agree with that either. I beleive it's another countrys turn to step up and take the lead and let America focus on itself for a long while.0 -
I've worked as hard as anybody I know. My social security statement shows contributions for every year since I was 15, I'm going on 65 now.
There are people who genuinely need assistance. Women who are abandoned by dead beat husbands with kids to support. They get WIC assistance. People who are sick but haven't met the 6 month period to get disability. Lots of reasons.
Don't begrudge good folks who have run into a streak of bad luck.
As yes Nunn, you are right about churches. The entire church population in my county contributes to a food and clothing bank, there is $$ for emergency housing- but churches can do only so much, mainly because of a lot of the people who bitch on this forum do not attend church and maintain a financial pledge. Think about it.0 -
Welfare is one thing,........SSDI "Disability", is another. Sure there are abuses on both fronts! I agree with Ruger about a lifetime limit for welfare assistance!
SSDI, for someone that has worked all their life, and develops a health problem that keeps them from doing what they did for a living, is NOT welfare,........they have paid for an "insurance" policy through their SS/MC deductions from their paycheck for all of those years. They are simply getting what they paid into, and for!
Obviously I am not talking about the "cheaters".0 -
The country has an obligation to take care of it's citizens.
So if the goverment fails to keep the factories in the country.
It's their responsability to pay for their failure.
So blame the companys for moving out to China, dont blame the people for needing help when the goverment fails to do its job.0 -
Marc, I think you need to dig a bit deeper here. Any system is going to have a certain percentage of abuse, it's the principle of "welfare", the whole word is just wrong. Look how many bleeding hearts are even here. Yeah, sure, there're extreme situations when people need help, but again, if they know there's a cushion they can fall on, they aren't going to worry about it too much. When I lived in belgium, I learned a bit about real welfare. People living off of their social programs get a nice house, free water, electric and food money all from "government". Now, then they are required if they can't find a job, to show up in an employment office once a week to get their check or something where they are offered a job and they have a right to turn it down and keep on collecting "government" checks if they don't like the offer. Why on earth would anyone work? Now, I did work over there, here's how it's taxed: i think it was over $55K (its equivalent in franks to dollars of course) pays 50% income tax. On top of this, the employer is taxed the same amount, so if you agreed to work for say $100K a year there, means you will pay roughly $50K income tax AND your employer will pay same $50K tax to employ you. What does that mean? only that instead of making $150K I am making $50K a year and $100K a year I earn goes to support freeloaders.
How do you think that system started? They didn't implement it right away, it was gradually built until people, like people here, started bleeding hearts and helping all the unfortunate folks going through hard time. What a load of croak.
I'll say it one more time, got nothing to do with vets and people who served the country. I don't care for people who got sick or lost a limb at a job site, there's already insurance for that.0 -

SneakyRussian,......I am totally in favor of everyone being responsible for themselves. I was trying to draw the distinction between welfare, and SSDI in a "perfect example". I believe there is a person up above, that IS that example, but don't want to point it out.
We have NO choice, at this point, as to whether we have SS/MC deductions taken out of our checks. If you are self employed, double comes out of your own pocket, like the 15.24% that I have to pay for myself for SS/MC.
Now lets say I have paid that for 30 years, and suddenly develop a serious heart condition, and can no longer work. I apply for SSDI, and after about 2 years of waiting, I am finally given my Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. I have paid for that through my deductions that I had no choice in. That part of SS, is basically an "insurance" policy, that one is FORCED to pay into.
I DO consider that different than welfare benefits.
EIC, is one of the biggest welfare giveaways in this country, that is labeled a different way. People that pay virtually no taxes, after getting what they did pay back,........then also get thousands of dollars extra, in the form of "earned income credit",......WTH is that about?
I have to pay state, and federal unemployment taxes, even though I can NEVER collect unemployment,............I own the business!
Simply trying to point out differences. I would be more than happy for the Gov to give me back all that I have paid in SS/MC taxes, and opt out of the system,..........don't have the option though![;)]0 -

Social welfare has its place. Like everything else it has its abuses.
I have an old "friend" from grade school days who is "disabled" (bad leg and hip) yet he is on the computer all day drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. I ask him why he can't work at a job where he sits at a computer, and he said he couldn't live on a job like that, and besides, why would he want to give up his great gig!
I get pissed at him because of the 1/3 going out of my account every month to pay for his lazy ass and beer and cigs.
I have zero respect for those kinds of mooches...
This is a very good exsample of what's wrong with "The System" You would think this could be policed better.
I know of several in our comunity who are on full time disability and drive grain trucks in the fall for farmers but get paid in cash. Never understood how it can keep going on ?

Except that the "class" of person who would sit on his keister and accept a handout rather than contribute to society is also the type of person that wouldn't think twice about smaching your car window to steal your stereo. What modern social welfare has done is foster an sense of entitlement that does not stop short of criminality.0 -
drobs - good to see you posting.
Mark - You're getting it from both directions !
Thinking on these issues some more - The welfare cycle MUST be broken, especially in light of the continuing influx of criminal mexicans.
As far as SS, & SSDI - we first need to put in place a method to detect and punish fraud, because whatever they're doing now, is not working.
We need to put in place an equatable system to transition to a more effective system. If you think that we will be able to make radical changes, quickly - it just won't happen. To fix it we need a plan for the conversion which will be implemented over 50 to 75 years.
We didn't get to this ratbababooey program over night, and the guys like me need to be given the opportunity to die off. Maybe even an INCENTIVE to die off. I would look with favor on something like 5 years of good stuff(by MY definition) in return for a dignified departure from this mortal coil.
Better minds than mine will have to settle this, and soon - before our Great Nation is crushed.

I for one love my Social Security and Medicare. Its not enough to live on but its a nice monthly check to help pay the bills.
I have worked and paid into the system for over 50 years. I now am working 20+ hours a week and paying in again.
This system will be alive for many years to come and will work well if folks simply stop tapping the system for benefits that they are not entitled to. Illegials are the most dangerous threat to the system in my opinion.
Its a form of forced savings that most undiciplined folks need!0 -
I agree that we would be better served if the money was held in individual accounts and invested in normal investment instruments. But you could not allow people access to the funds because they would spend the money just like they do their 401K funds if they are able to borrow or terminate their accounts.[:0][:0] 0 -
quote:Its a form of forced savings that most undiciplined folks need!
That's fine if true,........but give me the ability to "opt-out"!
Unfortunately, the undisciplined folks, need the disciplined folks money, to collect their benefits, as most of those are making chump change, and will suck out, what they have paid in, very quickly.
Leaves me stuck in a system that MAY, or MAY not even exist when my time comes,........or the age limit will be so high, that I will already be dead. Great investment!,...........doesn't even beat inflation in an average year.0 -

Was all of that pointed towards me? What did I say or do to upset you?
If it was aimed at me, there was no need to try to one-up me.
I'm talking more along the lines of Disability than Welfare.0 -
