Guy walked into the local welfare office to pick up his check. He
marched straight up to the counter and said, "Hi. You know, I just
HATE drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job."

The social worker behind the counter said, "Your timing is excellent.
We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a
chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter. You'll have to
    drive around
in his Mercedes, and he'll supply all of your clothes. Because of the
long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be expected to escort the
daughter on her overseas holiday trips and you will have to satisfy
her sexual urges. You'll be provided a two-bedroom apartment above the
garage. The salary is $200,000 a year."

The guy, wide-eyed, said, "You're oatmealtin' me!"

The social worker said, "Yeah, well . . . . You started it.

we had a post and thread about drug testing welfare recipients and it raised some interesting questions.

Let's hear your take on this system and it's effect on your life.

I liken it to a fence to keep the masses in check, and keep money in the economy. Do I like the system? no. Do I think it necessary? yes.

I hate welfare. I hate all the people who are on it. You'll hear some guy ranting about all the blacks and mexicans on welfare, and then hear about how he's on disability. Oh. So the blacks and mexicans get money from the government for doing nothing, and you get money from the government for doing nothing, but somehow you're better?

And let's be honest: it's not money from the government. It's my money. It's your money. It's money I worked my tail off for and the government takes it and gives it to somebody else just because they're old or too stupid or lazy to work.

Here's an idea: I'll make money for myself and I'll keep it. You get your own job. If you're too stupid or lazy to get a job, or if you "can't" work (funny how people "can't" work but they can attend football games, go hunting, travel, go out to eat, etc.), then you should starve to death. Not eating for a week or two, I imagine 90% of the people who "can't" work would find some sort of a job.

I hate people who take money from the government. Get a damn job.

Florida's welfare rate is lowest in the nation

Florida had the nation's lowest rate of households on welfare last year, according to figures recently released by the U.S. Census.

Just 1.3 percent of Florida households reported receiving welfare payments in 2006.

Florida's monthly benefit of $303 ranked 43rd in the nation -- ad that's still the maximum benefit today for a family of three, according to Don Winstead, deputy secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families, which determines eligibility for welfare payments, also known as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. (Want to apply? Click here.)

Winstead thinks the lower payments have helped maintain the state's standing among those with the lowest rates for welfare recipients. "That absolutely plays a role," he said. "Largely [it's the state] just not wanting to set benefits too high to encourage people to be on welfare rather than working."

The federal welfare reform law, passed 1996, made changes intended to make welfare more of a temporary benefit. The federal law said beneficiaries had to start working no later than two years after they first receive welfare. Florida requires them to start working right away.

In 1996, more than 200,000 Florida families received. There are fewer than 50,000 now.

I couldnt find any newer stats, sounds like the key is to keep the monthly income they get from welfare very low, forces them to get a damn job.

QUESTION: What should we do with people who refuse to work and rely entirely on welfare?

ANSWER: Throw them out of Congress.

I would venture to say that you don't know the whole story sometimes. Before you say you hate people on welfare, you should understand the occasional circumstances behind their being on welfare.

I bet if you were to have some life-changing occurence happen to you and you needed to rely on disability or welfare, that you'd be changind your mind REAL quick.

Right Cubs, and probably yell the loudest about how he deserves help because he has worked so hard.

Like none of the rest of us ever had ever worked - I guess he really is the "Lone Ranger".

nah. I am also against commie welfare society, it should be solely my own responsibility to take care of myself even in the worst situation.

Vets is a whole different story though.

welfare was supposed to be a hand up from the government. You know, s*** happens, you get a check until you can get back on your feet.

The problem is that there are too many professional welfare collectors out there, they don't care about getting back out into the work force. They like doing nothing and getting a handout for it.

I know a single mother who used government money to get her butt back in school and got a real job, she is now a productive member of society again. Unfortunately I also know of a lot of people (I lived in Albuquerque, you don't need to guess what "race" they are) who abused the system to no end.

Some of you paint with a very broad brush.

I contributed to my retirement/disability fund for over 40 years.

I would LOVE to exchange situations with you.

I am currently on unemployment. After i was HONORABLY discharged from the Marine Corps i filed for unemployment to help cover my bills until i find suitable work... the money that i get was paid through a tax, paid by the employer to the govornment, then i get a slice when i file the claim, its not costing you a penny. Is that wrong? i admit i almost thought about not filing for unemployment because, i fundamentally agree with you about government handouts, but i filed anyways because i simply needed the money. I guess i've changed my mind about TEMPORARY government assistance, its the long term "welfare" that i still have a problem with.

I've contributed (without choice) into SS since I was 16 yrs old that'll make it 40 years of MY money not yours that was taken from me and I want it back with the interest that it would have aquired from a bank in that time, from the government that took it!
What few small investments I had went byebye after 9/11/01(I trusted my broker and didn't get out quick enough)

And no I can't go hunting,or attend "games",enjoy the opposite sex, set on the couch and watch tv,walk around the block,or even cut my grass in one day!
So I hope nothing unexpected ever happens to upset your financial plans for the future.
Or heaven forbid that you ever get old and useless and have no family to keep you from starving. (If you've never went 3-4 days without a clue as to where your next meal will come from you have no idea of how you'll feel or what you'll consider eating!) From your words you are saying you would just craw off somewhere and die? RIIIIGHT!
Walk a mile in someone elses shoes before you go off about something you obviously have no knowledge of!

Now if you want to qualify that as multi generational lifetime welfare sucks then I agree with some of it.

But it's always non of my business...I dont care...I'm busy with my own life....But complaining always seemes darn easy to do.

What is welfare? That term covers a variety of local, state and federal programs. Depending on circumstances, one might qualify for some programs, but not others.

I knew a lady once who used the system as I believe it was meant to be used. She had married young, with no education, and had children right away. Her husband made decent money, so she stayed at home to raise her children. One day, her husband abandoned her and the children. I don't know all the details, but she was unable to get any support out of him.

So there she was, broke, uneducated, untrained, no work experience, with two small children to support. She applied for and received all the public assistance she could. Food card, public housing, subsidized daycare, AFDC, WIC, etc.

And she went back to school full time. She finished her education, got a good job, and got off public assistance. Now she pays to support those systems that supported her. This lady is a tiny minority of all public assistance recipients, but she used the system for what it is meant for: A hand up, not a handout.

And here's another contribution of illegal immigration ...

"They do the jobs Americans wont do"
... in reality they do the jobs won't do at that wage ... because the American gets a better income on welfare [xx(]

The welfare system has become a way of life for people with no motivation, for some it's all they know because that's how they were raised [xx(]

I must disagree. I studied the welfare system (briefly) in an economics management class in grad school and it helps this society more than you think. There is also a lot less abuse of the system that you think. In any gov't program like that, there will be abuses, but the benefits of the program far outway the abuses.

Also welfare does not cost that much. If you compare it to what would happen if there were no welfare system, it is miniscule.

Look to any poor African or Southeast Asian nation to see what would happen with no welfare system.

I am extremely against Government programs to give money.

There are times that help is needed and should be given, but I think in the realm of funds being given out, it is in the minority.

I also think disabled Vets should be well cared for.

Who else would agree to a 3 year limit to getting government assistance over the lifetime. If hard times hit on you, you have 3 years to get off welfare, if not then too bad for you. If you only need 1 year, then you still have a 2 year helpline left.

I would rather spend money on enforcement of the programs then the program itself. Have local enforcement that can randomly check you out. If in the middle of the day in the week they drop by and you are drunk watching Jerry Springer, then your help is revoked. If on welfare you just bought a brand new ATV, car etc, then you don't need help.

When I worked as a Marine Engineer, some of the other engineers would draw unemployment during their vacations. How, I dont know. I wouldn't do it, but these guys were making close to 100g a year.

I think for the people that truly NEED help, I would like to help but for everyone else, SCREW EM.

It's an incredibly dangerous path to start following if u start to use people on welfare as cheap labor.then all of a sudden all sort of companys private or stateowned start calculating on how to cut their costs by using cheap slavelabor...Us swedes are deep in to that crap right now...So i hope u dont do the same misstake over there.

I do believe this: If the Christian churches in America were doing their jobs, as exemplified by the first century churches, there would be no need for any sort of government-run welfare. Imagine that.

As mentioned welfare was never meant to be a "permanent" income for those that are physically and mentally able. I remember when my aunt was on welfare after her divorce. At that time I don't recall that foodstamps were heavily utilized. Instead reciepiants recievedwhat Ibelieve were called commodities which were basically bulk packed generic foodstuffs. Many of which were edible but just barely ( though what I wouldn't give to get my hands on some of the dehydrated eggs available at the time). No junk food and soda and an incentive in itself to get off the program.

I'd rather see much of the welfare benefits turned into a employer subsidy type system where instead of direct benefits the recipients employer recieved significant pay subsidy which was paid out to the employee. As an example standard welfare benefits would be paid out in an equivalency of slightly below minimum wage. Recipients who found minimum wage jobs could then have their pay above minimum wage subsidized to the amount of $3-4 per hour. The government would be paying 1/2 as much out, the reciepient would recieve and aditional 1/3 or more in pay/benefit and an employer would be able to maintain affordable help. There would have to be some provisions to ween the recipient off the system likely involving the employeer eventually matching the subsidy payment but that would probably wash cause most employees would probably change jobs before the "employer payback" portion came into play. You will still have a few people that will just suck off on the minimum benefit so they don't have to work but those people will exist no matter what kind of program you have.

I'll never forget filing for unemployment. I had lost my job and broke a collarbone and a couple of ribs the same weekend. I couldn't look for a job for a few weeks until I started to knit, and we needed money. I never felt any shame, but I didn't like the feeling of having to ask for, rather than work for money. I sincerely hope I never have to do that again, but I'm glad it was an option, because it was my very last option.

Social welfare has its place. Like everything else it has its abuses.

I have an old "friend" from grade school days who is "disabled" (bad leg and hip) yet he is on the computer all day drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. I ask him why he can't work at a job where he sits at a computer, and he said he couldn't live on a job like that, and besides, why would he want to give up his great gig!

I get pissed at him because of the 1/3 going out of my account every month to pay for his lazy ass and beer and cigs.

I have zero respect for those kinds of mooches...

Yeah, all the call centers around here that pay a living wage have this stupid damn rule about leaving the beer at home.

And they won't let you surf porn on the job either.
