Well, I'm sorry to have upset you. I think some do make sense. I still have every right to gripe. Your logic is flawed. CC is a responsibility. And out of 300 million people, there are BOUND to be many MILLIONS, that could not/ would not/ would not be capable of, handling the responsibility. Which would only serve to make us all look bad. Which of course, the end result would be calls for banning ALL concealed carry. Right back where we're at. Again, not everybody is carbon copies of you. 300 million, different people. It would take a new, simpler government with the general population boardering on anarchy for your idea to work. Not because that's the way we think it should work, but because that's the way it WOULD work.
Flying airplanes requires skill and responsibility. I think the airlines are entitled to judge who's capable of flying what when lives are at stake. Same principle.
"The right to keep and bear arms". The keep part is very clear. You should be able to own/keep anything you want (in your home). Bear arms IS open to interpretation the way I see it. When I'm in the woods, or at the range, with whatever I choose to own, I'm bearing arms. You can't deny that. I simply can't translate that part into 300 million people that should be allowed to carry anything, from Uzis to M-16s, any day at any time, in metropolitan areas, the likes of which they could have never imagined in 1776. If that is how drastically you are interpeting it. That can't work. It would never work. It's just the reality of it. The reality of millions of people having to interact. That's not up to me.
Perhaps CCW is a modern day law that works, that is actually a priviledge?
Anyway, right now we need to worry about the keep more than the bear part. They've already worn the latter down. The keep part is the core of it that's under attack. And in a day and age when there's so many other things to worry about, you have to wonder what the real intentions are behind this.0 -
Gun control is like Cancer, your never gonna stop it, it always comes back! [V] 0 -

You know..."Daddy...can I buy a gun"..... No...you were a bad boy...30 years ago, you had a fight...you may not have a gun...crap like that....
Do I crawll..? You bet...but I crawl KNOWING that it wasn't the Democrats that make me crawl...but my fellow gun owners that didn't have the guts to go to the streets to protest gun control....NO...that AGREED with gun control....
you are so Right! My brother in law quietly gave up his FFL in 1968 instead of Raising Hell about it. I was too young to vote at the time, but as a 17 year old gun lover and hunter, it pissed me off enough that I wrote a letter to the editor that no one took seriously.
The gun owners of America let the government effectively take our guns way back then. Then have sat on our *sses and are letting the government tell us when, what, and what type we can shoot. Now they are gonna say if we can even own a firearm. (or thats what it will lead too)
I had a buddy of mine the other day ask me as we were discussing Gun Bans; "Would you really be willing to die if government flunkies showed up at your door, demanding you turn over your firearms." It made me stop and think just how many of us are really serious when we gleefully belch out Mr. Heston's 'they will get my gun when they pry it from my cold dead fingers' battle cry. Get ready my friend to put up or shut up, you are about to be put to the test. And I can tell you this, they won't come into my house and take my guns without somebody besides me getting their *ss shot off. I fought in Viet Nam for some people's rights that I didn't even know. I will definitely Fight and Die for my own personal rights and property. They will then shake their heads as they pack up and watch the meatwagons drive off and say, "He was serious about that "cold dead fingers" thing." And the other guy will add, "yeah and that b*stard could shoot too." (Notice "meatwagons" is plural!)
The NRA is only chipping at a huge mountain, and by showing small victories they feel they can bring in more members. They should not be fighting to prevent future bans, they should be fighting to gain back all the ground we have lost! Why are there NO machine guns being manufactured for civilian ownership anymore? hell, every drug dealer in our town has a full auto AK47; or uzi...why not let honest people have them back too?
Sure we could have laws to keep criminals from buying or owning guns, but they have to be enforced! And they should be fair and reasonable... I was unable to get a pistol permit here in my county because I got a DWI for driving a mile to my house after catfishing all night while drinking a few beers with my dog! Blew a .08, so NO pistols! Sheriff said it showed poor morals! Meanwhile, he sits on his fat butt taking payoff money from drug dealers. So I just went ahead and let my wife buy her some pistol permits, and our family pistols all started showing up in her name rather than mine. Where there's a will, which we as a company of firearm owners sorely lack, there is a way. And it may take a revolt...but that won't happen, because most gun owners have become too inclined to take the easy way out. The it ain't worth fightin' for attitude will cost you more than you will ever imagine. Ask the citizens of Australia, Canada, England, just to name a few.
Well gotta go find the hiding places I will need...0 -

I said I don't support any gun laws but maybe I do support some. I don't think CC is that bad of a law.....
Your logic is flawed. CC is a responsibility. And out of 300 million people, there are BOUND to be many MILLIONS, that could not/ would not/ would not be capable of, handling the responsibility.
It would take a new, simpler government with the general population boardering on anarchy for your idea to work. Not because that's the way we think it should work, but because that's the way it WOULD work.
vess1,
I hear comments such as yours, from what are "supposed to be" pro-gun people, all the time. You say it wouldn't work, short of a state of anarchy. I have to ask, where is your PROOF?
Isn't this just......your opinion?
I say it would work, there would be NO shoot-outs on main street. The streets would NOT run with blood. (As predicted, by anti-gunners and people such as yourself) As a matter of fact, the violent crime rate would be lower than most ANY other place, if ALL the lawful people were allowed to carry concealed.
How can I offer PROOF of my claim, you may ask. I look to the states of Vermont and Alaska. Both states allow CC with NO license. Look at the crime statistics from those states. Where is the anarchy? The shoot-outs on main street? The rivers of blood which was predicted? Within federal guidelines, ANY ONE is allowed to carry in those states. From the college student who loves to party, to a loving wife/husband, to some elderly person in a wheelchair with a chip on his shoulder, and everyone in between.
Are you saying there are no nut jobs living in those states? No crazies, no criminals, etc.? I admit that the following is "my opinion" but the proof lies in the FACTS. When the average Joe accepts the responsibility of carrying a firearm, the criminals crawl back into the woodwork, because they KNOW that they will get BLOWN AWAY. Not just some ridiculous prison sentence, that will allow them back onto the street, in a year or two.
Another example I would cite, is the towns that have enacted a law. Every household, who are not restricted from owning firearms (with some exceptions) are REQUIRED BY LAW to own a firearm. The crime rate in those towns is "almost" nonexistent.
Along with the statistics that show, that in EVERY state which has enacted a "shall issue" CCW law, the violent crime rate has gone DOWN. It doesn't take criminals long to realize that their actions could prove FATAL. But I digress, we are not talking about "licensed carry" at this time.
I would also offer, as more evidence, in that the cities with the most restrictive firearms laws, have the highest violent crime rate. These are facts supported by FBI studies/statistics. So again, I would ask, where is YOUR proof?0 -

Not that I disagree with you, but look at who lives in those 2 states. All people are not created equal. If Vermont was not so cold, I'd move there in a heartbeat. Of course, the cold is what keeps out the riff-raff. This isn't our forefathers country anymore. I can assure you they are rolling in their graves at what a sewer this nation is becoming.
Our generation will be ok, I am not so sure about my children's generation. Better to start thinking about relocating to another country now. This country is headed down fast. I've heard 10% of Mexico's population is in the US right now with more to come. We elect idiot after idiot to run the nation. Not that we have any control over who gets elected anyway - which might be a good thing perhaps.
Reagan was the closest thing of late not to come from "royal" blood. But they (the party) forced him to take George Senior - a good guy to be sure, but never-the-less, it keeps the royals in power. Which again, might be a good thing. There is something to be said for having the same agenda year after year.
Australia looks like it would be a good country to relocate to - but of course they have the most restrictive gun laws. They're smart though, perhaps that ban will be repealed.0 -

Fine.
Throw out the Constitution..you are smarter then the Founders.
Now that its gone...aided and abetted by you...don't gripe about the ban coming. That is what goverments DO..limit citizens Rights..Since you don't recognize those Rights...you got nothing to gripe about.
And in a day and age when there's so many other things to worry about, you have to wonder what the real intentions are behind this.
In red above. It is not fair of me to "cherry pick" and disparage your otherwise senseable post. However I would like to make an observation. The right to fly an airplane or be a pilot is not mentioned as one of the citizens rights in either the US Constituition nor in my Kansas Constitution. In addition, self-defense is (or should be) a basic human/animal right and such defense needs access to suitable weapons (guns, etc) for that defense.
While there is a whole lot of sense in your post, there is another side to the situation. If you claim to live in a country that offers maximum freedom to its citizens, you and everyone else is going to have to accept that some of those citizens will abuse their freedoms. The results and costs of that abuse can be considered to be part of that phrase "Freedom isn't free".
But the time to clamp down on freedom is only after a particular citizen has proving they do not deserve that freedom nor will they handle that freedom wisely and that by having that freedom they are a danger to their fellow lawful, peaceful citizens.0 -
I am not mad at you. or myself. I was born years after the 1968 law (I know great excuse, huh) and have never supported it.

Nice Picture! Thats what we may see backing up that gentleman at our front door asking if we would like to "nicely" offer up all our firearms for disposal. (As he reads off his list of firearms we have bought since the NICS check started.) All of it may very likely be done in the name of patriotism. We have allowed the "gun control" situation to digress to the point that any rebuttals or actions taken by gun owners now will be considered "radical". We have put up with so much for so many years that every looks at what little we have left as the norm. Granted we still have more than many, but we have Nothing of what is guaranteed by the constitution.0 -

I don't understand the whole Law Enforcement Protection part. I know I don't need the dems to take away the guns of law abiding citizen to keep me safe. They just need to make for stiffer penalties for the thugs I deal with. What a crock of s**t. Protection? Form what? They are going to protect me from people who obey the law. Wow, thanks a lot dems. I feel so much safer already. 0 -
Oh and BTW, I'm just as proficient with a bolt gun as with a semi auto.
Speaking of bolt guns, Does this cover my MN? It was designed for the military in Russia.0 -
I imagine that there are some in the inventory of the US army or some LE agency locker somewhere
What do you nee that "long range murder rifle" fo anyway (i actually did not make that up. read it yesterday)0 -
It's good for shooting hogs. (That makes it a sporting purpose rifle doesn't it?)[}:)] 0 -

This new law could result in the constitutional challenge we need, to take gun rights to the supreme court, and score a big victory for gun rights, and possibly nullify not only this ban, but a whole lot of other gun regulations.
Never happen.....it'll put the NRA out of business.0 -
While we are all supporting the "Ban Bill" lets push for a addendum to add a ban for automobiles and drivers licenses for Democrats. Hey Senator Ted K. remember Chapaquitic ?
Guns don't kill people - people kill people! So do drunk senators, time to resurect prohibition. We don't need more gun laws. What needs to be done is enforcement of penalties. The US has plenty of islands they possess, convict and dump them. This has been done before historically.
Anybody ever checked FBI stats on how many people are killed with hammers? Howabout Rocks? There goes my landscaping I might stone someone to death.
Is it time for another million man march in Washington to regain and save our Rights?
Too bad only the rich idiots can get to Washington maybe we need another legislative branch of government "The Normal Joes"
I could go on but I'll save it for the trip to Washington anyone else want to go?0 -

come to think of it, A Mosin Nagant used to be an "Assault Rifle", then again, so was a musket; The politicians keep changing the definition of Assault Rifle, and Sex...Remember Bill's comment of "depends on what you call sex..." and then he even got so philosophical as to state, "depends on what 'Is' is..."
Sounds like "I think, therefore I am.... I think."

DIdn't I read a no transfer clause in this one? There goes the artificially inflated value.0 -
I was just reading through my new atlas today. Alaska has an average of 1.1 people per/ square mile of land. I don't know what Vermont is, but surely they aren't the same people as say, the previous New Orleans crowd.
I agree that open CCW would work in the majority of places. I just see some places where there would be trouble and it would ruin it for the rest of us. I don't trust high density, very ethnically mixed, population areas but maybe that's just me. I believe many of these areas would have a lot of trouble with people. Many of which may not even have a highschool education. The more people you have, the more accidental shootings and confrontations you will have.
Just don't view me as part of the problem. I'm madder about the current state of things more than most here.0 -

You are upset about another assualt weapon ban ??? GOOD...perhaps you can understand a little about how upset I have been...SINCE 1968.
