The British troops let themselves get taken because they probably had a completely indefensible position. From what I've read, they were on a boat and got surrounded by a whole load of Iranians.

Chances are it's just a bargaining ploy on the part of the Iranians - after Reagan gave 'em weapons, hostage taking got good to them.

it wasn't outright kidnapping. the brits thought they were doing something legitimate, and the "kidnapping" is more like an "arrest" on the part of the iranians. it's contested whose territorial waters they were in. I don't think there's much to worry about. read story below.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Iranian naval vessels on Friday seized 15 British sailors and marines who had boarded a merchant ship in Iraqi waters of the Persian Gulf, British and U.S. officials said. Britain immediately protested the detentions, which come at a time of high tension between the West and Iran.

In London, the British government summoned the Iranian ambassador to the Foreign Office: "He was left in no doubt that we want them back," Britain's Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said after the meeting.

A spokesman for the U.S. Navy, which operates off the Iraqi coast along with British forces, said Iran's Revolutionary Guard naval forces were responsible.

Cmdr. Kevin Aandahl of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet said the Iranian Revolutionary Guards had radioed a British warship explaining that no harm had come to the 15 Britons and that they were seized because they were in Iranian waters. The British Defense Ministry said the Iranians took custody of the sailors and marines in Iraqi waters.

Aandahl said a "very limited exchange of communication" occurred between the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Navy after it had intercepted the Royal Navy service members saying "that no harm had come to any personnel and that they were being taken to a place of safety."

The Iranians said they had captured the sailors and marines because they were operating inside Iranian territorial waters.

"The Royal Navy replied that they were well inside Iraqi territorial waters (and) that was the end of the conversation," Aandahl said.

You know, just because Americans and the British are overly fond of allowing illegal trespassers onto their territory without challenge doesn't mean Iran is.

Some folks still take their sovreignty quite seriously.[;)]

Amazing that the Brits would have such a small unit conducting boarding operations in disputed waters without back-up.

Sounds like they felt they were well within their rights to be there and expected no problems.

The Captain of that vessel failed his crew when he allowed them to be captured he should have warned them then destroyed all of their vessels as soon as it became clear they had take his crew hostage. If he was out forced they should have called in help it is past time to start using extreme force regardless of public opinion, if the nuts realize for every act we will respond ruthlessly they will behave, if not willing to fight that way we should leave.

I'm betting that this was like my time in the U.S. Army ...I was guarding the the "iron Curtain" with 5 rounds in my magazine! The service was more afraid of me shooting up everything as appossed to me stopping any attack.
I'll also bet the SAS in warming up in the bull pen! We'll have to watch this one play out!

If these guys were taken alive it's because there was nothing to be gained by getting their @$$es shot up.

I know it doesn't satisfy your lust for tales of wartime bravery, but it's not all about you.

Actually we could handle it if our civilian leadership gave simple directives and allowed the military to prosecute an agressive war.

I don't think the military is fighting with anything tied behind its back, if that's what you're getting at. If they went whole hog and started leveling every insurgent stronghold, we wouldn't win because such actions would simply create more insurgents. People get upset when you bomb their homes.

I think they're doing all they can and then some - it is the situation, not their lack of prowess that has led to this quagmire because what we are saddled with is not a purely military problem. If it were, we'd have taken care of it by now. But when you are faced with the economic, social, religious, political, AND military problem that is Iraq, it is a bit much to expect our men and women in uniform to play religious counselor, welfare administrator, civics teacher, lawyer, and police officer all at the same time.

It is no sin to say the military is not succeeding when they have been tasked with the impossible coupled with the unreasonable.

I can't stand the idea of these Marines being taken captive, without firing a shot.
I like the attitude of the Samurai in Japan of 400 years ago. If fifteen Samurai were surrounded by 100 enemy, there was no question of what to do. They would fight to the death. To be taken captive was dishonorable.

Seems they were asked to board the Iranian gunship from there patrol dingy's to discuss matters, & then kidnapped..
As far as war is condserned ...dunno about that , but they will get there ass kicked ...one way or another !! [^]

The British are more "subtle" [;)]

What I would like to know is what was the captain of HMS mCornwall doing while his crew were being kidnapped,he should be held accountable for allowing this to happen.

Why die for no good reason? It's easy to judge these men for not going down in a suicidal blaze of glory, but that would be more for your benefit, not theirs. As we all have the luxury of being safe at home, I think anything said advocating a glorious last stand should be taken with a pound of salt.

Methinks the movie "300" is having an adverse effect on folks 'round these parts. Everyone expects someone else to be a Spartan.[xx(]

These were British sailors and marines patrolling Iraqi waters under the supervision of the UN. This was an act of war against the UN and the Brits not the US. We should just supply the air cover...lots of it.

However, to address your point, the US military is handling the conflict in Iraq just fine. It is the politicians and press that are having problems.

Before you flame me keep in mind I don't think our military should even be there. Nation building is not a mission I feel is appropriate for our modern military. However, that is the mission and they are doing a pretty darn good job.

    elkoholic,

I don't think the military's doing fine - they're doing a damned good job. Iraq is a quagmire, but it's most certainly not due to any failure on their part.

+1 Iraq is a G.D. cesspool that needs to be turned into the world's biggest glass mirror.

    EMM,

You forgot how we used to fight wars. Wars used to be fought to completely destroy the other side and no matter how mad the survivors got....they had absolutely no means to do anything about it. After being poor and penniless for a generation their kids will grow up lost confused and unwilling to fight anything.

Look at Japan and Germany today.

Iran, Syria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan....they all could be dealt with the same way. Destroy everything.....even the oil reserves below their country.

maybe if you had the luxury of spending years as a hostage in iran like the previous americans did then you would have a better understanding

Lets Nuke em' of course that was my stance before this event as well...
This planet doesn't have a green glow in the dark with three eyed man eating fish and it needs one badly. Crappie fishing is so boring. And now that we have a politically correct motive for dropping the bomb let's "Get er done"....

And if the media would stick with covering something they can handle, like a basketball game.
