Chief, I was whipped as a kid, but not as bad as was rcrx, to the point that with him Children and Youth services had to pour water on his back when he was 10 years old to get the shirt he was wearing to school that day off his back, because the due the severity of his Dad's beatings, he had stripes of abrasions that stuck to his shirt.
I don't have a lot of "feel good" adult reactions to whipping the crap out of a kid.

I am not talking about "beatings" with my son. His butt has been whipped, but right now at 13, I can give him talking to and he understands what I'm talking about. If at his age and size he needs his butt whipped I would do it now. I can't see me ever having to do it again. The spankings that he got when he was younger taught him that the actions he was doing was not exceptable. He has always been a good kid but, there were times that he needed a butt spanking. I talked to him tonight when I picked him up from B-Ball practice. He stated that he is very happy with who he is and wouldn't change a thing.

If anyone would like to E-mail me their phone number, I would have my son call you and tell just how bad his life has been because of a couple of spankings. He is very proud of himself just as I am.

Chief, I understand that, but at the same time, I cannot advocate corporal punishment, mainly because there are too many people who for whom the differential between "punishment" and "abuse" is too questionable.....

I will not give any parent carte blanche to abuse their kid, even in the name of dicipline.

My parents believed in restitution. When I did something wrong, my parents believed in making things right. One day I was bored and took my pellet gun and shot up the neighbor's downspout. My mom saw me doing it, and she set up a plan.

To teach me about how the neighbor spent money to buy a downspout, she had me go out and mow a lawn for the money to buy a new one. To show me how a ruined downspout is difficult to replace, she had me replace it. To show me how it takes a lot of time to repaint a new downspout, she had me repaint it. To show me how it is necessary to rebuild trust and a neighbor's opinion of me, she had me mow his lawn for a month.

I tell you what, I would have taken a spanking any day of the week. Had my parents done so, though, I would have never have learned about why vandalism is wrong, how it costs a lot of money and how somebody is going to have to come around and do a dirty job to put things right again.

I feel kids do need spankings. If kids learn just by speeking to them, why are our schools having so many problems with kids now-a-days?

You talk about weak arguments, then you say that you cannot advocate corporal punishment because there are too many that can't tell the difference between a spanking or a beating. What about the ones that can. Are you willing to have another generation of kids grow up with no discipline?

How about the right to drive? Maybe we shouldn't have that either. You know there are too many that put their children in the car and drive over the speed limit- there are too many that do not pay attention to the law. That puts the kids life in danger; spanking does not.

A spanking is not abuse, nor would I ever condone any type of abuse. It is only one of any good parents disciplinary tools. My daughter received a few swats on the backside when she was younger, now all it takes to get her attention is a stern look- nothing more.

I do not wish to offend, but you cannot lump everyone into the same generalization. I would not hesitate to jump in and stop someone from beating a child. I would however applaud them for a swat on the posterior for a child that is in need of discipline.

As far as the difference between children and adults, there is a huge difference between the mind of a child and that of an adult. That is why we don't prosecute children the same as we do adults. That is why we have restrictions on what children can do, yet let adults make the choices for themselves. A child needs boundaries. Without them, most will not grow up to respect anyone or anything.

    I could ramble on....
Godbless and I wish you well.

Also, my 21 year old son likes to tell the story of the night we were in wal-mart. He was four and I had just got hired on the local P.D. He was whining for a toy as usual and mom was standing her ground. I felt sorry for the little guy as I grew up poor and had very little. It always broke my heart to see him sad so I told mom, "I've got a couple of dollars in my pocket, I'll buy him the toy". She agreed and I turned around to tell him the good news. As I looked around he was looking the other way as he was pushing the toy down the front of his shorts and pulling his shirt down over it. He turned around and saw me looking at him. I grabbed the toy away from him and sailed it across wal-mart, (I hope I didn't hurt an inocent bystander). I took him by the arm and we started for the front door. I was P.O.'d to say the least. We got outside to the parking lot and let me tell you I tore his butt up. I also explained to him about my new job as a Police Officer and how it would look if my new boss got wind that one of his new officers' son was stealing.

He will tell you to this day that he remembers the toy, (bendable Pokey, remember Gumby and Pokey), and he remembers the trip to the front door. He will tell you that he does not remember the whipping that he got but he remembers the ride home. I tell him that his feeble little mind blocked it out.

I ain't proud of it but the point is 17 years later he has never been jailed for stealing anything.

I do not wish to offend anyone with my opinions on the subject, and as a person who has worked many years in Social Services with emotionally and physically abused children, it is one I feel very passionately about. So, when I read about some parent bragging about how he/she is going to, or advocating how someone need to "put a boot upside some kid's backside" etc...it tends to get me worked up. Please. If someone posted about doing the same to their dog, the forum would be out for their head on a pike.
Corporal punishment in the absence of any other form of parenting is nothing more than a lazy parent's short-term punitive action taken against a long-term disciplinary problem. It stops the child's action through the infliction of pain, shock and humiliation, and allows the parent to vent frustration, but provides no real guidance, and with it runs the risk of teaching the child little more than inflicting pain on someone weaker and smaller than you is an acceptable adult reaction to a frustrating circumstance. Try this in the workplace with an infuriating co-worker, or at home with a partner, and it is called "assault." Real guidance, discipline, takes a lot more work, time, patience, and creativity.
I think we are all adult enough to realize that I was not making generalizations that all parents who spank are batterers. Note the words in italics. Trust me though, there are plenty of "lazy parents" out there that this does apply to, who raised abusive adults who now have their own children or spouse/partner in the system.

"...teaching the child little more than inflicting pain on someone weaker and smaller than you is an acceptable adult reaction to a frustrating circumstance..."

I have heard this argument against spanking before and to me it doesn't hold up. I agree that abuse is heriditary but please don't lump "spankings" in with "beatings". What folks like you don't understand is when kids are small and get spanked occassionally it instills something in them that makes them not want to do things to bring it on again. Most times, at least with my kids, the spankings were few and far between but they did get their butts spanked on occassion. I do not feel like an abuser nor will my kids tell you that they were abused and will probably tell you that they deserved to be punished when they did get punished.

I have a perfect example of how a child turns out if let go or had his butt kissed for 15 years instead of being made to mind. That is why, in my opinion, grandparents should not be allowed to raise the grandkids. I will bring him around with love and guidance or he will be punished. I can't spank him because he is about 6'00" 200 pounds.

But, he won't disrespect me or my wife and daughter. He won't lay hands on me, my wife or daughter and if he does, what I do will be in defense of my family and not discipline. I will hurt him and he will go to juvenile detention if he ever thinks he can push any of us around.

I promised my aunt that I would take him into my home and treat him like one of my own and that I will do. I just hope he comes around to our way of thinking and starts making passing grades in school. I mean the kid has a 174 I.Q. for heaven's sake and he's flunking Geometry! He's just never been made accountable for his actions or anything concerning him. His grandmother was constantly putting the blame on the teachers, the school district or his A.D.D.

He's had too many excuses not to succeed and now it's time for him to buck up and get with the program. I only have two years to get him ready to be on his own. He is 15 physically but about 10 mentally. But I do believe God sent him to me for a reason. Maybe I had it too easy with my own kids or maybe this kid really needed some guidance that was lacking at home, I don't know. I ain't the best father figure in the world but I will not give up on my kids or let them run amock like so many parents I see.

This is far different than your earlier posts. I have stated that it is a part of disciplining a child. It is the last resort for us, but there are times when it is the only thing that will sink in. That said, now that my kids are old enough I doubt that I will need to spank them again. But just in case, I haven't told them that.

This still goes back to a spanking is not a beating and visa-versa.

I can understand with the things you must have seen, that you are jaded in this, but most people will only call when things get really bad. Of course I am sure you have seen some that did use corporal punishment correctly. Thank you for sharing your background so that we can see a little into what has made you feel this way.

After completing Christmas shopping and also church services I have finally decided that these young parents nowdays suck. I heard one parent counting to three at least 10 different times in Wal-Mart. Church was just as bad as they allowed the maniacs to run loose during the service. Apparently counting to three ten times and time out doesn't work. How about a good swat or a boot to the A**. It helped me at an early age and I'm not scarred for life.

I was at the post office yesterday waiting in line. Some mother allowed her two little angels to run around screaming and shouting and rolling on the floor (ugh) while she did her thing. Every once-in-awhile she would give them a dirty look which they ignored completely. All this proves once again that any idiot can and usually does have children.

What rcrx old lady can't seem to understand, is that the vast majority here, understand the difference between a spanking, and chaining a kid to a post, and using a cat of 9-tails on them.
I am aware that she is of the opinion that nothing but talking, and time-outs should ever be used,........but unfortunately there are many kids that are not influenced by those things.
I have had to live for the past couple of years with my fiancees son that is now 14, and is a perfect example.
I cannot touch him, nor have I, as I am not his father, and we are not married, unless I want to end up in jail for the first time in my life.
I have tried everything with this kid to get him to bond to a man, but he has spent his entire life around females. I bought him a 10/22, and started taking him to the range with me every weekend. When around only me, he acts like an angel, and talks his head off.
When he gets back around his mother, or more than a one on one situation, he reverts to following her around like a "puppy", and ceases speaking.
I ask him to do something, he will sit and stare at the wall until about the third request, then jumps up like he is irritated.
The last time that she spanked him, he threatened to call the police on her, and said that if she did it again, he would tell them I had abused him also.
Also when I gave him the rifle, I gave him the long speech about never touching any of my guns without my permission, and me around to supervise,.........he said he understood, and I thought that was that.
One day while I was cutting grass, he was raking in the backyard. I went inside to get a beer, and when I came out he was in my Avalanche, and handling my .45 loaded!
That was the 10/22 that I sold on GB a while back, needless to say![xx(]
He is now gone from here, as I will not be intimidated by a kid. I would do the same with my own blood, except that never would have happened in the first place.
This kid is basically "lost", as he was raised by his mother, and while she is a wonderful person, she should have never had children, as she is very quiet, and does anything to avoid controversy of any kind.
By the time I came into the picture, it was too late for me to reverse what had been done, especially with me unable to discipline him in any way.
Time outs sure as heck didn't work with him! He would not stay in his room,.........he would just keep coming out, and daring you to do something else.
I just don't understand why we got along so well when it was just he and I alone, almost like he became a different person, and I believe it was because I knew how he "worked", and he also knew that I was not someone to be messed with.
    Really too bad.
    Sorry for another novel![;)]

Dammit can't you people see you are hurting your children mentally as well? Most of you say the whippings you got made you the man you are today. THINK ABOUT THAT. You are hurting your children the same way you were hurt. If you have to make your children do what you want them to do because they fear you what does that say about you as a parent? The only reason you don't use the same tactics on a person who can fight back is because you know they will knock the crap out of you so you hit a little child who can't hit you back. Do you sit back and light up a cigarette and relax with a satified smile on your face while your child is somewhere crying after you get through whipping them? Hell if you don't already you should start whipping your wife too because I'm sure she don't always do what you want. Ever try sitting down beside your child and talking to them in a calm voice about a problem? Out of all of this the dumbest one I read was a guy hitting his child because they put a crayon mark on the wall. A damned crayon mark.

Rosie,........no offense but what you just said is not valid in any way, except for "ABUSE"!!!!!!
I am one of the ones you refer to, that DO believe being spanked taught me lessons. If you would have read my long post above your head,...........you would see that I have never struck a child in my life, but had a situation end because he needed it far earlier than he got it.
By the time she spanked him the 2 or 3 times that I know of, it was a joke to him, as he was as big as she is.
This was after years of "talking", and "timeouts", and "sensitivity".
The kid will now grow up to be a girlie-man, and probably not even be able to function in the real world, as he has no respect for authority.
What do you do for a living if you have no respect for any authority?
A boss is "authority",...........go into business for yourself, you better have a hell of a lot of "self-discipline". Either scenario, he will be fired, or fail.
Feel good sentiment only goes so far.[xx(]

please what a cop out....how do I know? Well let me fill you in... I had the crap beat out of me when I was a kid, when I say crap yeah I had stitches, belt marks across my back, bruises, black eyes the whole thing. Did it hurt me mentally... nope not one bit. I gradusted 5th in my HS class, even though I slept thru my last 2 yrs of HS and I grew up to be a wonderfully happy adult with a GREAT life. Did I spank my child when she was smaller? You bet your ass I did! Nothing like what I got but she did get popped. Is she mentally damaged? that thought is laughable. She is a happy well adjusted soon to be 13 year old. Her friends parents rave on how well behaved she is and the manners she has and ask me how I do it. Their kids back talk and have very little manners and all of them were, and still are, "talked to" about what they do wrong.

So dont give me this "you are hurting your kids mentally" crap. It's just like all the other liberal spew...yeah go ahead let them continue to roll all over you.. why dont you just "talk" to the person who rapes and murders a child.. I mean the death penalty may hurt the criminal mentally after all..... [xx(]

The "feelgoods" are creating a generation of dysfunctional kids, that will be on meds for life, and end up being the "quiet children" that explode and kill people when they are hit between the eyes with real life, and discover that they cannot function within it!

Have any of your chlidren ever been in trouble with the law? Any ever get fired from a job? Any have problems with authority? Before you answer, think about what you have posted in the past.

Now there is a logical argument....

"I got the crap beat out of me, but did it ruin me? Heck no!!!! Made me a great, well-adjusted person. Therefore, it's okay to do it, and if you don't agree, you are 'liberal scum'..."

It's like saying "my mom fed me rat poison when I was a kid, and it didn't kill me, so it's okay. Just a little..."

No, my children have never been in trouble with the law nor with any authority figures. None of them. They are not perfect. But they are polite, respectful, well-behaved and reasonably responsible, in spite of my alleged mamby-pamby, "feel good" liberal parenting practices, since I never raised a hand to them.
Yes, I have been fired from a job.
I only have trouble with authority figures who use said authority improperly. Am I blindly submissive to "authority figures?" Hell no! Should anyone be? And as far as I am concerned, if an authority figure takes advantage of said authority to hurt someone else, they are wrong, and don't deserve respect.

Some sort of psychological ground work being laid here?

rcrxs old lady, spanking kids works a lot like child molestation and child abuse. Those that got it, do it. They seem to justify what they do with the epithet, "It did not hurt me any," Meaning, "I am a better man than you."

In truth, as you well know, teaching children that violence is an acceptable behavior tends to yeild adults who behave violently.

And yeah, I got some spankings. They stopped when my mother could not find a belt, and I gave her mine.

When my now 26 year old son was about 10 years old, he paid me the highest compliment he has EVER paid me....... We were eating out in a local joint and a couple of kids were acting out badly and I looked at my son and said, "if they were my kids, I'd bust their butt...." and my son didn't blink an eye, he retorted quickly, "dad, if they were your kids, they wouldn't be acting that way......".. I must have gotten some jalepeno in my eye or something cause I suddenly had watery eyes....... wow, did that bless my heart.

Most of them are your little angels who you did not instill some sort of "fear" into when they were young. Now they are grown men and women and believe me if I didn't have a firearm readily available the fight would be on and sometimes is anyway because most of them know I can't shoot them for resisting. Fear works, small children or convicted felons. Fear of death or incarceration or fear of a spanking. What type of society are we raising that believe they can do whatever they want as long as there is not a Police officer/Boss there to stop them? Makes me sick.

I get calls from parents because junior won't get up and go to school. For heaven's sake, be a parent/adult and get junior off to school without calling the freaking Police Dept. And believe me talking don't work, why do you think junior gets up and puts his clothes on when I get there? Fear. It works. When your kids get grown they will understand and respect you even more. When they are kids they may hate you but that is okay, parents aren't supposed to be popular.

All you folks that don't believe in spanking kids take a step back and ask yourselves why school shootings are a recent event.

It's because junior has never had physical pain instilled on his butt.

Also, for you "social workers" preaching here, where were you when the four year old boy was tortured and beaten so bad that his little body was one continuous scar, where were you when his "parents" put a rubber band on his BallPark Frank because he wet the bed, (caused by sexual assault), where were you when his "parents" moved from town to town and hospital to hospital to hide the abuse and injuries. Give me a freaking break, leave the parents alone who are spanking there children and go after the monsters that are killing and torturing their kids. At least pull your heads out of your butts and learn to recognize the difference in discipline and abuse. Most of us have.

I get so tired of being dispatched to a house or apartment to check on a child when it is not my job, but yours. Why are you injecting me into your screwed up mess. I have yet to go out and check on a child that was in danger or appeared to have been abused. Sure the living conditions were sad and the kids didn't have designer clothing but as far as I could tell no broken bones or open bleeding wounds. Why am I never sent out to find a child that looks like he is two but is actually four years old. Scars all over his body and a distant absent look in his eyes? Because you "social workers" are too busy busting the chops of descent hard working parents who are trying to raise kids and make em upstanding memebers of society and not criminals.
    I gotta go.

P.S. I quit smoking in 1985 so no I didn't have a smoke and smile after I spanked my kids. It really did hurt me more than it did them.
My wife actually says I'm a push over and too easy on them. Believe me I see what kind of kids they could be and it makes me cherish them even more.

I would assume as an officer of the law, that you realize that parents have rights, even the most abusive of parents. And all cases of reported abuse must be investigated, even the most insignificant, thereby diverting a great deal of attention from more serious allegations and investigations.
The system is far from perfect. I rarely had a decent nights rest while at the job. I still will lay awake wondering about the special kind of hell that a particular child or four or five in this particular county are going through this very evening, at the hand of the very people he/she should be able to rely on for protection. So get off your freaking high-horse, and beat the pavement on the other side of the street before you make accusations.

Also, I would rather think that a child should be taught not behave badly because it is the right thing to do, not out of fear of some sort of punitive measures. Otherwise, what role does morality in this? "So, when the authority figures are not around, or I can sneak behind their backs, i will do whatever I please"? Seems to me there is a difference.

I think the last response indicates she has had a "few"!
Look at the spelling, and composition change.

rcrxs old lady, spanking kids works a lot like child molestation and child abuse.

I always kind of had good thoughts about you He Dog,......I presume you are saying you beat your kids, and molest them?
You just said you got "spankings"!

Nope, never had kids, I was scarred for life by those spankings.
