Kimber or Springfield XD 0 -
Sig P-220 0 -
Anything over two grand ought to be good enough. 0 -
+1 What FrancF said! I've got a Kimber Stainless Target II (and a
.22 conversion kit for it) a pretty decent shooter. My Springfield
is the GI model (.22 kit for it as well) it's a better
shooter now since the trigger job.[8D]0 -
KIMBER!!

Sure, there's a realistic price. Not! [:p][:0]
Stick with an American made .45 like Colt, Springfield, Smith&Wesson, or Kimber. You won't be disappointed. [;)]Maybe the tactical model?? I had a H&K before and they are so sweet!!0 -
Sig P220 my 2 cents 0 -

How about a Detonics

S&W M&P is a nice pistol for about $500...
but what are you buying it for?
target?
plinking?
home defense?
carry?
truck gun?
zombie defense?
mother-in-law?
let all know, and the oh-so-wise will help you make this most serious purchase[:o)]0 -
For plicking, target, competition, or personal defense carry. So many different options. Personally I own a RugerP345k (first handgun), Springfield full size 1911 (just because) and a Kimber Ultra RaptorII (carry weapon). 0 -
Buy a Rock Island 1911!
They are every bit as good as a Springfield or Kimber and with the money you save you can get about 1500 rounds of ammo to shoot up![;)]0 -
Two of my current favorites.....An HK USP .45 Compact and a Series 70 Colt

$400 out the door0 -
P220.
Outstanding.
If too much money, get the RIA.

Well, you could buy two of these and take the extra money you save to buy ammo and targets. You sure won't wear them both out anytime soon.
Real men don't mind admitting that cheap is not always bad. Hi-Point, I've got a couple of them and I will gladly admit that I like them.0 -

I have a Colt Defender and I'm very disapointed with it considering the price tag it has.0 -
SIG P220! I have 5 Sigs in different calibers and I wouldn't have anything else. I've had H&K's and they just don't compare! 0 -

+1 on the XD, love mine.0 -
You didn't say what you wanted it for.
If you are looking for an accurate gun for the range or competition, and are really looking at the SOCOM, find one that you can put in your hands. The grips are too large for MANY people. It is a BIG gun. IF it does fit your hand, and you don't need the threaded barrel, you may want to look at the Expert model. A lot of the same features as the MK-23, but can be had for around $1,000.
Can't beat it for accuracy or reliability. IMHO.
For a carry gun, go with the SIG 220.0 -
H&K would be a great choice, the USP 45 is the best defensive handgun made today (imho). But you could always look at any of these:

Stay away from Hi Point. I have one of their JHP 45 ACPs and after barely 300 rounds, it was full of metal shavings and I'm not going to even start on jamming problems with it. There's cheap and then there's low cost quality. Hi point falls into the cheap category.0 -

Under $400 out the door depending on what your transfer FFL charges!

3 of my 6 RIA's came from Bellshire who has about the best prices on them. If you use the "BUY IT NOW" button he pays the shipping!
I can buy 1000 rounds of ammo for $230, so for a total of $600 I would get the NIB RIA and 1000 rounds of ammo![:D]0 -
