The Bolivian's will recognize them as the sovereign nation that they are, and they will be able to declare their independence. The declaration does not need the recognition to be legal, but it gives weight to it, no different than our recognition of Israel as an independent nation. Not that the reality will play out that way, mind you, but they have my support. Good for them. 0 -
Sounds OK to me. Now they can all apply for their passports to enter the US. The US no longer has to support them with money or services. They will have to apply for work Visas to have jobs out of their nation (off the reservation).They can pay tarriffs on all exports.

An indian squaw went to the doctor for a physical exam. The doctor declared her perfectly healthy but noticed that she had no nipples. When he asked her about it, she replied "None of the 500 women in our tribe have nipples". I certainly support Native Peoples, the US has done nothing by abrogate and ignore the treaties they made with the Indians, but somhow I don't see the poorest reservation in the country becoming an independant nation with great prosperity. Surely they do not want to become the next Sudan.0 -

Bla, Bla, Bla,....the people that spout off about this stuff have wasted their lives wallowing in their warped judgement pipe dreams born out of extreme, pathological, malignant jealousy and embarrassment that "their people" did not move forward for thousands of years save for the firearm and the horse and we all know where they came from.
I hope Indian youth ignore these types and while acknowledging the wrongs and suffering their ancestors endured, embrace education & assimilation & at least privately, thank God that mess DID happen in the 1600-1800s so they can have the life they have today with automobiles, modern medicine, and on and on. You can display, hang on to your heritage, identity on holidays, special celebrations like every other ethnic group. Sadly, too many are wasting their lives, dressing in various degrees like it's 1870 and wonder why they can't get a job or refuse to move around and go where the money is like everybody else. I hope Indian youth know that you get one shot at life, one go 'round and don't waste it. They've all got two good psychiatrists-their own two eyes.

I have driven through the Sioux reservations in South Dakota. What could be more depressing!
Crummy little houses, broken down mobile homes, cars on concrete blocks, dirty snow piled up, no trees, the cold wind blowing across the Dakota prarie in 15 degree weather.
The incidence of alcoholism is through the roof.
If I grew up there, I would be an alcoholic, too.
I feel sorry for the Lakota people. My great grandfather homesteaded in central South Dakota in 1881, so my family directly benefitted from the destruction of the Lakota culture.
But, this has been going on from time immemorial. The Roman Empire wanted to flex its muscle in 48 ad, and they invaded the homeland of my ancestors, the British Celts, and killed all who stood in their way, and destroyed the Celtic tribal society.
The Sioux had lived in Minnesota until about 500 years ago, when they grew so large that they decided to move into the Dakotas.
The Indians who already lived there were either killed or expelled. The Sioux treated their fellow Indians the same way the the White man treated the Sioux.
My dad grew up in Miller South Dakota. He was born in 1923.
He has told me many stories about when "The Indians came to town."
Every year a group of Indians would come to town, and camp a mile outside of the town. There were about 200 of them. These were almost certainly Sioux.
These Indians had wagons and horses, no motorized vehicles.
My dad said that they would stay for two or three weeks.
The adults of the town didn't pay much attention to the Indians, but to the kids it was like the circus had come to town.
My dad, eight years old, and his buddies would go out there and talk to the Indians. He said that they had a big iron kettle, which they kept cooking on the campfire 24/7.
On the first day in town, a few Indians would go to the butcher shop and beg for scraps, fat, gristle, whatever might be thrown away.
They would come away with a hundred pounds of free scraps, and throw that in the kettle. Any wild roots they knew how to pick, into the kettle.
My dad said that the Indian women were owned by the men, and they would rent the women out as prostitutes to they White men. This way they could earn a little money and buy some meat or potatoes for their stew pot.
Also, it was illegal for Indians to buy liquor. When my dad was a little older, maybe 14, the Indians would give my dad ten bucks, and he would go into town and buy them a bunch of booze.
After three weeks of hanging around Miller, the Indians would pack up their wagons, and go 20 miles down the road and hang around another town for a while.
If you figure my dad first met these Indians in 1930, this was 54 years after the Little Big Horn.
My dad quite probably was buying booze for some of the Indians who fought Custer.0 -
OK, I guess you knew I would jump in here.
I have not heard about this, it's seems to be a small group doing their own thing. I have not heard of ANY endorsement by the tribal elders, the people really working with the Lakota. From time to time there are "self" appointed "leaders," the media looks to those just like our government did in the 1850's and '60's. The treaties signed back then were not signed by the "leaders" of the people, just some noise makers of the time. I'm not sure how Russell Means got into all this, I don't that AIM supports this issue.
There are Lakota people, in Washington, who lobby for the ratification of the treaty of 1868, trying to get the gov't to honor their promises, they wrote the treaty, have not honored any of it to this day. Using the legal system, the Lakota are trying to get the gov;t to honor their own promises, an uphill battle.
I do not know of any elder that supports the Ghost Dance. Supposedly, the Ghost Dance was to bring back the buffalo, and to drive back the new people. We will never know for sure, the man that was going to check it out was killed, his name was Sitting Bull. I do know people who Ghost Dance, I have not asked them the details. The elders view is it would be nice if the buffalo return, but the "new" people are here, some born here, send them back to where, this is their home. Unity for the best for all people is the goal of the Lakota elders, the elders of the tribes, not the "media" elders.
There are seven camps of the Lakota, three of the Dakota, and one Nakota, if I remember everything right. A little unity would be nice, but like all humans, something difficult to obtain. Every people have their faactions of radicals, like the Christians have the Ariens to contend with, we have similar mindsets in our group. www.crstgfp.com

I went to medical school at the UNiversity of North Dakota. At the time the Lakota wanted to ban the school from having the fighting sioux as a mascot. The school has long honored the Sioux and has even given special consideration for the Sioux who attend the school. Each major reserves 15-30 seats just for Sioux. Saidly, with the few natives who demand the change of the mascot and use of the Fighting Sioux, Indian preferance for majors and classes has been done away with. Now the other Sioux tribes are complaining about discrimination. I say hand them the tissue and tell them to build thier own schools. 0 -

As in The Mouse That Roared, they will, indeed, become an independent nation, DECLARE WAR on the United States, fire a couple of musket shots at some Feds from within their new country, (and here's the important part) immediately surrender and demand war reparations, an infusion of a couple of hundred billion bucks for 'reconstruction' ... and they're good to go!

enough for Asian kids, is attracting Mexicans like flies to honey, and good enough for white kids and black kids (as long as they don't get caught up in a past they weren't around for also)it by God is good enough for Indian kids. I have forgotten nothing - to my knowledge. It is they, the injuns who forgot a few clerical details.
HAD I been in charge;
1. A proclamation of a new Injun Nation.
2. Proclaimed free elections to formally declare the creation of that new nation.
3. Requested the assistance of (at LEAST) 100 ACLU lawyers - probono, 10% of them black, of course.
4. Immediate trade negotiations with no fewer than 50 countries - as many as possible enemies of the United States; ie Eastern Bloc, Soviet Union, China, N. Korea, et al.
5. Established a well maintained and trained army - of at least 5.
6. Applied IMMEDIATELY for membership to the United Nations.
7. Appointed Jane Fonda as 'Ambassador At Large' and sent her out to drum up support amongst the Arab oil-rich states.
8. Made ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY SURE that upon the day of 'confrontation and conflagration' that there were a minimum of 5000 reporters from throughout the world ON SITE with 1000 (minimum) cameras running - uplinked to international sat/relay, on active feed.
9. Every available Injun baby sprinkled liberally throughout the army ranks (in the more visible outer peripheral ranks for good photo advantage) - complete with exploding blood packs attached to each baby.
10. And, finally, as many Injun Holy Men formed as a peace delegation in the leading vanguard - each holding a white peace dove (equipped with miniature exploding blood packs) praying as they marched - with a mob of more than just a measly 300 (well paid) extras - wearing holed and patched ragged clothing, most with pronounced limps and many with arm slings!
... THAT would just about cover it!
