Soooooo...let me understand a few things here about this whole situation:
1. They have RENOUNCED their US citizenship...so doesnt that make them illegals in the US now? Can someone call ICE?
2. They have RENOUNCED their US citizenship...isnt that one of the questions on the Form 4473? Looks like they are gonna have to give up their firearms.
3. They want to make the Lakota Nation an independent nation...think they should ask the US citizens that live in that area what they think.
So just for sheets and giggles, lets say they get their way and get an independent nation no longer under US government control:
- I think they would have to pay fair market value of the land they want to claim from those who do not wish to be part of their nation and would be forced to leave
- No taxes??? WOW!! Talk about a pipe dream. Who is going to pay for their schools, hospitals, emergency services and on and on? Uncle Sam is no longer required to foot the bill.
I am part Choctaw Indian and I agree that many wrongs were done in the past, but it is just that...the past. Many American Indians have benifited from being citizens of the US and will continue to do so...unfortunately many prefer to just sit around and expect the American taxpayers to give them handouts.

Another conflict with another tribe happened about ten years ago.
The Chippewa in Wisconsin had an old treaty that they could catch Walleye and not have to go by the White man's rules.
But that treaty was written 140 years ago, when the Chippewa were fishing with a string with a hook on it, or else a spear.
So these Chippewa had a seine net, and a dozen guys were hauling in two thousand Walleye in one day.
One thing I learned from visiting the upper midwest, don't f*** with the Walleye. This fish has semi-divine status up there. In some towns, there are giant fiberglass Walleye replicas in the middle of town, I mean these fiberglass fish are 40 feet long! It is a shrine for the followers of the Walleye cult.
So the White people were all bent out of shape because they thought the Chippewa were taking all the fish.
There was a big demonstration there at the river on the day the Indians were going to fish. I heard this story on NPR so it made it even funnier.
The Whites were yelling at the Indians, "Timber Ni***r!!"
That cracked me up, because I grew up in the deep south, and all I have ever heard was that all the racists in the US lived down in Dixie.

All right, a little more news is trickling in. I suppose some of you know I am involved with some of the Lakota people. Anyway .....
Most of the Lakota people are hearing about this on the news, just like everyone else. Even the elders had no knowledge of this beforehand. Many still do not know of the Declaration of Independence.
The people who presented the Declaration have done their homework. They are going into this the legal way, White Law. As Americans we have been involved in other Nations, helping them stop genocide, fair treatment of people, etc. Now, the Indiginous people have brought this to the attention of these nation, and their eyes are on us. They are watching to see if we will honor the laws we have, and the laws we helped them put together. Pretty slick on Russell Means part. The Lakota are gathering a following very quickly. They have presented the way they intend to support the Nation, it is feasible. Even I am surprised how well thought out some of it is, I know there will be more headaches, though. I do think it will end up in the Court system.
There are many "white" families in the described territory that support the Declaration. Of course there are many who don't, it will be interesting to see how white law rules on this. At the very least, it will bring about some interesting debates. Will Uncle Sam really honor it's own laws? We shall see. Not to long ago some people who wanted to separate brought about a greta war, but our roots came from people freeing themselves from a "tyrannical" gov't. I will be paying attention to this, no matter the outcome.0 -

I meant, it was funny to me as a Southerner. I grew up listening to the media always portray the South as the place where all the racist incidents occurred. Mississippi was bad, Alabama was bad, Georgia, where I lived, was very bad.
By implication, the North was a place of perfect racial harmony.
If you listened to the national media in the 50's and 60's you would know what I mean.

What I tried to get across in my initial post was that it was funny to me as a Southerner to hear Wisconsin Yankees tossing racial insults. Maybe the liberal Wisconsin Yankees aren't as pure as I had always been led to believe.0 -
