How Many Here Have Used A Outhouse?

One wonders about multiple hole outhouses. It's one thing to go into a public bathroom, but every 2 or 3 holer I've seen, they were just sitting there right next to each other, no dividers, nothing. Am I to think that ma would be sitting there doing her business, pa would come in and set down and do his, and the boy would come in and set down too? One big happy inbred family! [}:)] I don't care how close you are, some things are private!

Sure I've used one. Camping, shooting, etc. The one damned turlet I can't manage to plug. On another note, boy that irritates- you flush 5, 6 times and still get to break out the plumber's helper. Gotta love the low flows. [;)]

Smell isn't so bad. Not nearly as bad as being near the litter box when the cat takes a crap.

Not only have I used an outhouse, right next to my parent's house is a RESTAURANT called the Outhouse. They've been in business for over 20 years. Strange.

I grew up with them and have used them many times. They are gross, but you can put a little lime down them and kill the smell for a while.[:(]

We had a first class outhouse, built on a cement block foundation, electric light, drop siding, asphalt shingles and the seat was covered with LINOLEUM!
[:0][:0] You really had to be sure you had to go before you would plop your butt down on that linoleum seat in the winter. We also had the slop jar for Mom and my sister and my Dad and I had to go outside. Yep, we caught some kind of he11 if we didn't get out away from the house a ways.

Have you ever noticed some old two storie houses with stained roofs and siding? Lazy little boys.

I still have the old chamber pot and baby pot. I tell my family that's what I make large batches of soup in.[:D]

Just before I left home, I got to dig a septic tank and lateral lines for the inside plumbing.

I've had the same one for over 20 years. Door has almost fallen off and the GF is always complaining about "Mt Everest". But, hey, if I build a new one, then folks will likely want to visit.

    BubbaJoel,
Not only have I "used" many an outhouse, I've "abused" my share on Halloween.[;)]

One Halloween we had terrorized a small local towns outhouses pretty well, but there was one made out of corrugated sheet metal we wanted. We thought it would make a nice resounding clang when it hit the ground. The problem was it was down a blind, dead end alley. We had pulled our car down that alley and was in the "act", when a local deputy marshal pulled in and blocked our escape. we scattered and he went into a nearby house to get help to find us.
Would you believe that three scared kids can pick up the rearend of a 1/2 ton truck and move it out of the way?

Wundudnee, My grandfather told me that as a kid in Florida they also used to turn outhouses on halloween. He said for several years in a row they had the route down so pat that one of the farmers anticipated them and simply moved the outhouse off the hole and down the route a few feet. they came running at the outhouse and dropped into the hole. Said they hit the canal to wash off, and never got the clothes clean. Would you belive one farmer could lift an outhouse?

Our elk base camps are almost always near an outhouse...WOW that is cold start to your day!! One year we got snowed in and had to dig it out just to open the door.

Oh I'll add to my earlier response- I've gone in the woods too, with no outhouse- but I always carry TP!

I've used many of them; most at state parks around here, but several have been on people's land. One was at our church. [:D]

Every time we are at the deer camp. No running water, no electric, no PHONES. And it's still the best two weeks out of the year.

Never used an outhouse but on various occasions, I've used the Port-A-Potty and "Here's Johnnie".

All this nostalgia over outhouses is pretty amazing. So the logical follow up question: How many did not make it all the way to the outhouse?

My Great Uncle had one on the farm that I remember from the early 60's. Having been involved in the Boy Scout organization, both as a scout and a leader, having a outhouse was considered a luxury in some of the areas were we use to camp.....[;)]

Grades 1 thru 4. A three holer for the boys about 60 yards south of school.Another one about the same distance east for the girls (have no IDEA how many holes it had HE-HE). Eight grades and both teachers
also drank from two underground cisterns that caught rain water from three room school building. I could write a book.

Does the outhouse my aunt has at her river lot count? If so I have

Yup, I've used many of them in Canada at hunting camps and hee and there in the States. No bid deal, if ya gotta go ya gotta go. I will admit that a two holer up in PA at a friend's hunting camp did seem a bit strange.

In our present apartment near Boston we do have TWO bathrooms, but they are both inside!

    1. I too do not understand the logic of the two-holer. I don't know anyone that want to be in there with me.

    2. Someone talked about stains on the siding of two story buildings. I know of an Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity (predominantly ag & farm students) where there is a huge and growing dead spotwhere nothing would grow outside the back door where guys are too lazy to walk down the hall. Last I say, the dead zone was growing.

The first floor windows also tipped out. They were usually stained. Again, college student laziness, or maybe it just because you can.

Did you ever wonder what was in nose of a locomotive?

    Uh--huh, yeah that's it! It's a crude porta-potty.

I've seen a couple of truck drivers do it in the pit while dumping a load of corn.

I built this one around 1995,it's been relocated to a freinds farm.I had it down by the river close to my bunk house.Sure did enjoy it.No one around,do business while watchin' the deer and pheasants, and vice versa. The 5 gallon bucket has lime in it,a little sprinkle after your done takes care of any odor.On real cold days you just set the Mr.Heater in there for 10 minutes and it's just like uptown[8D]

The 6-8 holer was common in Viet Nam. After a while plumbing is maybe a dream you had last night. Also I was 6 before I even knew there was in door single holers. Never saw a sears catalog without missing pages.

Back in my day it use to be called Sears Roebuck catalogs.. Sure had alot of tickets to the hockey game..[;)]

Reminds me of a joke I heard once --

A couple guys wired a four hole outhouse for sound, by putting a speaker above the pit, which was in turn wired to an amplifier and microphone outside.

A lady came in and sat down, they gave her a few minutes and said in to the microphone "could you move over one hole lady, we're trying to paint down here!"
