How Many Here Have Used A Outhouse?
I know theres a bunch of you that probably never used one. Boy did you miss a treat. Some probably never even seen one.
Yep, they were fun. Cold outside in the middle of the night and you hold it as long as you can and then take off running to hurry and try to get back to bed to get warm. Twist just right and get a splinter. [:D] If you were lucky you only had to do #1 and could just go off the porch.

Used one all the time at my grandparents cabin a little ways out of Yakima WA.
The cabin had a toilet but the plumbing and septic couldn't handle much of the solid stuff so we used the old fashioned out house for that.
The cabin also only had a bath tube inside and the shower was outside. The plumbing was mounted on an outside wall and had a shower curtin that went around you while standing on a concrete slab.
Try takeing a hot shower when there is snow all around you. It is fine untill you shut the water off and then it's a mad dash to get inside!0 -

Our old hunting cabin had a two holer. In the 60's and early 70's when I was a little kid I'd work in the summers around the cabin and then go for long weekends duck hunting with my Grandpa. No smell quite compares to an outhouse in warm weather.........
As told by my Grandpa:
A construction guy shows up to the job and immediatly runs to the double hole outhose. He lays his coat across one hole and sits down on the other. He finishes his business, wipes with a couple pages from the old Sears catalog and sets the catalog on his coat. DOWN the hole the coat goes from the weight of the catalog! The man pulls up his pants, runs outside and gets a long stick. He starts poking around trying to "hook" his coat, the slop is all over the coat and his pal comes by and asks him what he's doing. He tells the story and his buddy asks him, are you really going to want that coat at all after it's been down there in all that slop? And the fella says, are you kidding? I could care less about the coat!! My lunch is in the pocket!!!!!!!

An outhouse is all we had until I was about 24 years old. Every once in awhile we would have to dig another hole and move the little building to another spot. The worst thing about having one is having to check for wasp nests and black widows each time you used it. You had to be sure and hold your nose. Got hit by a yellowjacket more then once right in the middle of my business.....it ain't good. [xx(][xx(] So, when I saw my dad heading out with a newspaper and flashlite in hand, I knew what he was going to do........Inside plumbing is great. [:)][:)]

Back in the mid 70's I stayed a week on my Uncles farm in the Ozarks. All it had was an outhouse. Boy, did that suck! The farmhouse burned down around 15 years later and my Aunt was really happy because they were now going to get an indoor bathroom. 0 -
They always use to tell me that the outhouse was how you could tell how rich someone was. One holer=poor, Two holer=well to do, three plus holer= rich![:D] 0 -
Yep, last time I used one it was a two holer. I walked in and saw my uncle throw a $100 bill down the hole. Amazed I asked what he was doing. He replied "I aint going down there for just a quarter". 0 -
...yep. My uncle that lived in Grand Saline had indoor water, but no freakin bathroom,...go figure. Always hated the outhouse, really hard to concentrate with spiders and bugs crawling everywhere when your 8-9 years old.
If I did not have to take a *&^%$ I'd go behind the barn or a tree...[;)]

We bought our second house which was a remodeled older home. There was a one-holer in the yard. My wife said she didn't want that thing there so people could see it. Too close to the house to burn it. So I tore it down. Like pulling teeth. Double wall with newpaper in between for insulation. Took a couple days. Took it out in the field and burned it. The newspapers dated in the 1903 range. The man we bought the house from lived a quarter mile down the road. He came storming in a few days later in a rage. Wanted to know why we tore it down, that he had wanted it. I found out later why he wanted it. There's a market for these in good shape. Some in the three and four figures. Well, he should have put it in the contract. 0 -
You havent lived untill you get up in the middle of winter,head to the out house with flashlight in hand and eyes lookin back at you.

The house my parents bought in 1964 had a three holer (one short one for kids) and no indoor plumbing at all. We had to use it while the remodeling was going on but not regularly.
Camp Rotary where our troop attended Boy Scout summer camp had outhouses. One night my cousin sat on a black snake which turned out to be the record length captured that summer. [:D]0 -
When I was a kid we would go visit my great grandparents. They had indoor plumbing at the time, but kept their two-holer "just in case." We kids thought it was the neatest thing to use the outhouse instead of the indoor toilet. That was a LONG time ago, and now I know better! I love my running water and air-conditioner! 0 -
My dad used to take us to a fishing camp in northern canada, the out house did not have a hole in the ground, it had wood crates, we would get there on Friday, and by Sunday the crates were full[xx(]

When I first moved here to the Ozarks in 77' or so we only had
running water for the kitchen sink. Used a two holer, Cooked on a
wood cook stove, and bathed in the creek. My how things have changed

mainstay at our place as a kid, found out early life wasn't fair, females at the house could use the "the thunder mug" during the night but boys couldn't, one positive thing it cures one of being afraid of the dark at a young age.

I have used an outhouse many times. Dad built one on our place in Arkansas, when it was just a vacation spot, and it was still in use for a while after he and Mother moved up there. Hated it, but that's all there was.
I was acquainted with a young woman who was a legal secretary. She had had been raised by, and still lived with, her elderly grandmother. Grandma didn't have any plumbing in the house. The well was outside and water had to be hauled in for cooking and washing.
After my friend got out of school got a job, she had a pump installed on Grandma's well, and had plumbing run to the house, water heater, kitchen sink, bathtub, everything BUT a toilet. That's where Grandma drew the line. No toilet. She wasn't going to allow THAT to go on in the house. She believed it was unsanitary.0 -

My grandparents' house had a two holer. They only had one indoor bathroom and about 20 grandkids, so during visits if the indoor was in use, you had to go to the outhouse. 0 -
Don't remind me Joel, that is one memory I don't belive anyone treasures, and certainly no one should regret missing out on. I don't know about anyone else, but I would never use a multiple holer while someone else was. 0 -
Yep. If you hike the Appalachian Trail today, you too can get to use one (most have excellent views) Remember my folks telling me their first house was two bedrooms and a PATH. (to the john) 0 -
Used them in hunting camp more than once, and at several of my Amish friends homes, that's all their is.
At my uncles camp they would bring the seat inside and keep it behind the stove. If you were the one that forgot to bring the seat in you had to go out and warm it up for the next guy that needed it (you wouldn't forget it more than once)0 -
The 6-8 holer was common in Viet Nam. After a while plumbing is maybe a dream you had last night. Also I was 6 before I even knew there was in door single holers. Never saw a sears catalog without missing pages. 0 -

While I enjoy camping id rather use the woods and some poison ivy toilet tissue than deal with that smell again.0 -
Yep, all we had until I was 11 years old was an outhouse. First place we live it wasn't too bad as it was in the far end of the shed and you could reach it thru the shed. Second one hung out almost over the river so the spring high water would clean it out. Had to walk a ramp out to it in all kinds of weather. Spent every summer at Grandfathers camp at the lake and he had an outhouse. That one I got to clean out a couple times a summer. [:(!] [xx(] 0 -

two(2) sisters and a mother never did see the inside

My grandparents had one until about 1955. They even put wheels on it to make it easier to move when you had to dig a new hole. Three holer so I guess they were rich.
They didn't have a well just a cistern. Whenever it rained they put out barrels to catch the water & then rolled them down & dumped them.
It still makes me mad when I see water from people's sprinklers running down the gutter.
They also had a fruit cellar buried in the back yard that came in very handy when a tornado came right over when I was there & they had iceboxes as well.
That all changed when they finally got an electric line out to where they lived. They built a new house & tore the old one down.0
