The strict British gun ban followed a school shooting. There were over a dozen kids killed and the shooter had two pistols, I believe they were 9mm. This happened about 15 years ago.

I googled up the British shooting that led to the gun ban. It happened in Dunblane, Scotland in 1990. Seventeen people were killed. The guy had four pistols. This was the result from crimelibrary.com

They took their fight all the way to Downing Street where they met with then-Prime Minister John Major to discuss the issue. This is from my co-worker who is a friend of a survivor: Shooter came into a classroom, opened fire on everybody, then went next door and opened fire, came back into the classroom a 2nd time and started picking off the survivors before leaving again, more shooting outside the room. Came in a 3rd time for the last couple of survivors. 2 survived in the first class out of approx. 12. One of the survivors is known by my co-worker, this info came straight from the survivor's wife is works with my co-worker's wife. This guy was sitting next to a buddy who took a round to the head.
Hospitals are closed to the public just to treat all the victims.0 -

Not to sound racist or something, but generally, Asians (and by here I'm refering to Chinese, Thai, Japanese, etc.) here in the US are OVERWHELMINGLY law-abiding. That doesn't make any sense.

The gun man must have had student ID or been a student, as the reports stated that to gain access to the dorm where the first one was shot, you needed student ID....That was from a student in the dorm..
There are also saying the gunman had a handgun only and was looking for his girlfriend...
THis makes one wonder if perhaps his girlfriend (if its true) was with the first guy that was shot, (one in the dorm) and in his anger decided to take it out on the other tech students?..0 -

At the risk of sounding crass, especially to Americans and our members who have kids at VA Tech, I was at a gun show not long ago where a vendor was showing a 9mm pistol to a potential customer. A gunshow patron interjected that the 9 was no good and wouldn't even go through a thin jacket. He said the same thing about the .38 spl as well. He said the .45 wasn't much better but would knock someone back 4 feet. As a retired LEO, I had to laugh at his ignorance. Any firearm whether a .380 or a 50 cal can be just as deadly. Apparently the bad guy in this case had 2 9mms, if I am not mistaken, and looked what has happened. For those of us who believe in defending our lives, our loved ones, and those around us, you don't necessarily have to have a hand cannon. If that is holding you back...don't let it. 0 -

I really hope that the govt. does not react with emotional legislation to this tragedy. I hope they realize that you just can't legislate away the ticking timebomb of a mentally deranged psychopath. It's just a fact of life, nutcases like this are going to go off from time to time. They just want to kill as many people as possible. The NRA-members.. forget about them. How they vote is a laugh when compared to the rest of the general population.
Now - I'm not saying the NRA doesn't do any good or that NRA-members don't wote right. I'm just saying.. in the big picture, it doesn't really matter, because the general public is SO far more in numbers.

This is a tragedy no matter how you look at it. I agree,......no way will this turn out to be good for us. If someone had CCW it could have been stopped quicker. We had a local incident recently where a CCW stopped several possible killings, over what took place, but that is not how this will go. The anti's will use this until you are sick of hearing it! 32 at this point, not 38 like the other poster said. I also heard the Fox news thing about ,........it must be an AK-47, or a machine gun.

For tobefree: Earlier, it was reported that the suspect had 2 9mm pistols. I have not seen any confirmation yet. If my memory serves me right, when this happened at the same college less than a year ago, it was brought to a conclusion by a student(s) who ran to their vehicles, retrieved their own handguns, and brought the rampage to an end. Or was this another location? In any event, we all recognize our kids should never have to fear for their safety at school, but they do. We also realize that it is next to impossible to prevent these sort of incidents 100%, but if people maintain the right to keep and bear arms, they might be able to limit the damage done. Government's response is so often the same, one size fits all legislation to restrict the rights of the law abiding. 0 -

To Me the arguement for CCW is stronger... But that is me!!! I never really know if I'm right or wrong about my CCW Rights for everyone everywhere stance but today it seems to me that this could have ended very differently.....
