I can't help it Bobski, one look and it was love at first sight, one shot and it was worse. 10 shots and one bullet hole later I asked the darned thing to marry me. I am just an emotional sort of guy[:I][:I][:I]

Ok, time to make the list again. Too much "I love my this and that" going around, so its time once again to make the `can you do this' list to stand up for the FINEST .22 PISTOL EVER MADE".

How many of these questions can you answer 'yes' to, about your gun?

    1. Did your gun win an Olympic gold medal for the U.S.A., ever?
    2. Was your gun accepted into military use?
    3. Was your gun used or still being used in national covert operations abroad?
    4. Can you change the front blade on your gun yourself?
    5. Can you change the whole barrel on your gun in 15 seconds?
    6. Can you change the weight of your gun by changing to a different bbl length and weight in 5 seconds?
    7. Does your barrel have the option for weights?
    8. Can your gun be compensated without gunsmithing?
    9. Can you install a scope without losing zero in less than 15 seconds?
    10. Can you install a scope without gunsmithing?
    11. Can you field strip your gun in less than 15 seconds without tools?
    12. Even more important, can you reassemble it in 15 seconds without tools?
    [:I]http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=279729[:I]
    13. Does your trigger have anti-backlash adjustment?
    14. Can your trigger sear be adjusted?
    15. Can your standard bullseye gun be converted to Olympic match 22 short in 15 seconds?
    16. Can your bullseye gun PASS the Olympic judges and their rules?
    17. Can 95% of your parts interchange without fitting?
    18. Does your barrel have button swedged rifling?
    19. Is your muzzle crowned?
    20. Does your gun have stippling?
    21. If used, will your gun go down or up in value in 5 years?

I sure hope you can answer yes to all 20 questions, because HIGH STANDARD CAN.

I hope our original poster is taking notes.
other guns are fine, but you were asking for the FINEST. here was my vote.

I have a Ruger MK I and a MKII 22/45 Bull Barrel as well as a MKIII 22/45 Bull Barrel. I would say the MKII 22/45 is as accurate as any pistol Ive seen, and feels much like a 1911 in your hand.

    22. can you take 6 sets of bbls and slides off your team-mates guns and put them on your gun and shoot a perfect match?

quote: the point is any pistol vised in a bench vise can do that. and most do.
what matters is when its in your hand being held.
So it has nothing to do with the gun, it's all the shooter. Okay, I got it now.[;)][:D]

but can it do it every shot for 55 years interchangabley?
    trap, you missed the point.
the 22 is by design, the most efficient bullet ever made. by nature, 22's are accurate. its how long will they last and how they hold up to punishment, matches, different shooters, abuse, wear, etc...

key question our poster asked was, 'what is the best and most accurate 22." not all 22's are button swaged. my guns are 55 years old and havent even begun to wear out.

ANY 22 can be improved upon. giles matched some of mine. so did mr. shea. but out of the box, most for the money, most accurate 22 is high standard.

I agree with Bobski that the Conn built High Standards are some of the best 22 Target pistols ever made. I have been shooting Bulls-Eye with some success for 40+ years. Camp Perry 1972-2005 . However I would like to say the best is the pistol YOU can shoot the best . You owe it to yourself To try as many as possible. I also think you should switch off from time to time It will amaze you at how a strange pistol can make the shooter shoot better for a short period of time. After all the shooter not the pistol is the weak link in the chain as far as score or hitting the target. Another note is if you want to train for NRA bulls-eye matches or CMP/DCM matches then also look at a Marvel or Kart conversion unit "PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN"

bobski u lie[:D] hi-standard is not THE most accurate 22,,,,it is one of the most. it was one of the best[8D] at it's time but now it is not picked[:0] as one to buy as per survey shown above.

don't get me wrong it is and still will do the job but things have changed. i had and still have new in the box H-S's but only for show

High Standard frames do not hold up,, they have like .030 metal thickness that are proned to crack

i must of had 20 HS or so cracked that people traded in on SW 41
i have seen them welded, glued , silver soldered like the the one i'm posting

I always like shooting a Hi-Standard but.........don't judge a gun on the past, especially if it won 1 gold medal......look at a gun that
    wins all the gold medals

I used to lust over that HS Trophy. Never did get one. Ruger M2 target but I'm no match shooter. A friend has an old HS Military. Sure feels good in the hand. The best and most accurate .22 can only be determined by each person. The "best for me" is not necessarily the best for you. Its what you can do with what you have. No different than cars, bars, or cigars. Personally I'll take an old K-22.

Like I said, it was not in a vice, it was on a sandbag. Which I did not own, the range supplied them.

point is, your pic is a pic of 3 shots in the same hole with no target. great! 30 yds even! but you didnt say what other circumstances were involved.
Gee, didn't know I had to post All the particulars. Lets see, I think it was a Wednesday, no probably Thrursday, somewhere between 10am to 3pm. Might have been partly cloudy, might not. I was facing south. Slight wind I would imagine, since it is ALWAYS a bit windy there. Sandbags were on a table, I was seated on a bench. But it WAS a wobbly bench. [:0]
I think I was drinking a SPRITE, but it may have been a GATORADE. I did not use a target, since I was just there FOR FUN. I shot one round, then aimed at that hole again, then again. Did I leave anything important out?

two kinds of common 22 matches are done in usa these days....indoor reduced target and outdoor full score.
Never shot a 22 match. I shoot combat pistol and 3-gun. No 22s, rifle or handgun, are even allowed. Many times, when shooting a match, they have had to measure to see if there were 2 rounds that went through the same hole. It has always measured out at 2 rounds. That is shooting for speed and accuracy. (in other words, OFFHAND) Other people that shoot the same kind of firearm I do, have never even had a figure 8, much less one hole on a target.

fyi...a group is 10 shots. where did the other 7 go?
Didn't know that I HAD to shoot 10 rounds, since I was just there for FUN.
    I know better now. [;)]

heck i can shoot one shot and say...5 went thru there too. many camp perry cheats try that trick in matches.
Are you calling me a liar? Why would I?

You act like the picture that I posted was a direct insult to the ones you posted. Did NOT even enter my mind. Figured yours were offhand, and pretty good shooting at that. Thought I would throw in a pic of what I did one day, while out having fun at the range. If I knew it would have cause all this.....I STILL would have posted it. ROFLMAO

I think the original poster, that started this thread, can see that there are a lot of accurate 22s out there. MOST guns will shoot better than the person holding them can.

Had a High Standard once. It was an OK gun, just not what I wanted. Hardly ever shot it. Got rid of it. I did find 10 magazines for it, that I couldn't find when I sold it. Have to put them up for auction one of these days.

    Just poking at you bobski.
Hope you know this is all in fun. [:D][:D][:D]

would you like me to show some 41 pics like that?

hi stds cracked because ignorant owners shot hi-v rounds thru them. you know, the crowd that used them to plink with instead of winning trophies?
it would be the same if someone took a 22LR hi v and shot it thru a 22 short gun and wondered why it jammed.

a lot of people own cars and motorcycles that are way too much car/cycle for the owner and end up wrapping them around trees. to them, being seen owning one is more important than being able to understand it and using it for its intended purpose.

and im sure people buy horses but cant figure out how to saddle them and blame the horse too![:I]

if used properly, the high standard is still the best gun on the market.
ive owned 100's of hi stds and none have ever cracked in my custody. have i seen cracks? sure. ive also driven by junk car lots and seen brand new cars being crushed too. its how well the owner cares for something that matters.
someone here posted a challenge to my post by quietly trying to reduce the hi std to just another fine pistol. the question was and still remains, which is the best and most accurate. and still, no one can list all the accomplishments that the high standard offers for NO EXTRA CHARGE.
point is, many FINE pistols can be made better, but the high standard already has what most other guns desire to make them better. sure, go ahead, remove the gold medal from the list of accomplishments. now match up the other 21 points to your choice. bingo. case closed.

on the 3 shot hole thread. same hole 22 shots are common. just like 3 strikes in a row are common in bowling. but try that while a crowd of 200 spectators are watching with TV coverage while a judge signs the score card, now THATS an accomplishement.

oh...you know im not out to challenge someones ability. im just sayng its very easy to focus in on a 3 shot 1 hole pic and say wow. but to witness it being done is something much more amazing and youll never forget. and what are you using jacketed bullets in that pic for anyway? surely it wasnt a rifle was it?[:D] and too, no mention of it being scoped or iron sights![:0][:)] ehh, hang around us paper punchers for a season and youd be getting this all day from us. its part of the fun of bulleye, fighting off claims and challenging targets![:D]

everyone knows that guns are just part of the picture. yes, the shooter is the most important piece of the puzzle. but having a FINE pistol takes a lot of the guesswork out of wondering why a bullet goes stray. any match shooter will tell you that concentration is so intense that you can actually see the bullet strike the target at 50yds. just 2 weeks ago, i took my 22 out and called all my shots to the exact ring and location to a spotter. he couldnt believe it. with a less than fine gun, it would have been impossible to even begin that level of shooting. can you call your shot? fine. but...can you call your shot, be off, and tell yourself WHY, make a correction, and make it go where you want it to next shot?
    THATS when youve arrived.[;)]

    go high standard.

Buckmark... but Bobski makes a convincing arguement.

I think the S&W 41 is good but costs twice as much as anything else mentioned.

S&W 41 sure looks good engraved.

    change it to a 5.5" bbl in 5 seconds.[:p]
nice group! wheres the other 5? did ya quit so you wouldnt ruin the group? what ya shooting at a scope target for?[:D]

still, all i see is talent being displayed. no one has liste the features that can beat a high standard for best deal in town.

now for the record, i know people who are deadly with rugers. a ruger in the right hands like perry said, can be a thing of beauty. quirks can come and go regardless of the gun. some days youd swear the gun is broke when all it is is blood pressure or eatingthe wrong food before match. and i do know the list of some advantages that rugers have, but no one has listed them yet. its all still been emotions.

and, we still must go back to the original question, the best and the most accurate.[;)]

I'm not going to go to the lengths of praise that Bobski has, but I will say that my as bought Hi-Standard slant grip has a better trigger, better sights, and is infinitely easier to break down and clean than any out of the box Ruger. It really is every bit as good as the more expensive guns.

As to the Smith 41, even though I have a picture of one in my sig below, I still prefer the Hi Standard. Better balance (that's subjective; I understand that), and I like the slant grip.

OK, with my H&R Hunter 10 in. made in 1930 I have shot the eye out of a squirrel at 50 yards while on horseback, in a hurricane, twice. Or was it a chipmunk, can't recall right now.

Im just an outsider looking in...The only 22 pistol I own is a Smith and Wesson 617. Im my no means a shooting expert, have been in exactly ZERO competitions ect...but from what Ive read Bobski is just as emotionally tied to this gun and he claims everyone else is tied to thiers. Go ahead and tell me Im wrong Bobski but that is my opinion based on your posts. Its clear you have your opinion on the matter and have made up you mind. We all get it. Happy New year.

    Let me weigh in.
I shoot bullseye (I'm not that good).
I shoot a Mark III with a self installed Volquartsen kit , it's better than I am. 100% reilability.
Owned a Benelli M95 , it was 95% reliable (that additional 5% is what drives bullseye shooters crazy). Sold it.
Had a Citation , again reliability and this time weight problem. Sold it.
Put all competition components in my Mark I target and am very satisfied with it's open sight performance. 100% reliable.
Shoot a Hammerli 280 in center fire. 99.9% reliable. balance (for me) is just right.
And so it goes . Rugers are damn good guns even not considering money as a qualifier.
Conclusion: a person wanting an accurate 22 should , as previously mentioned, try a lot of guns to fill that roll. Some as less expensive than others and these will need gunsmithing work. Grips and weights customize the gun to your comfort. The trigger is the most important part on the pistol but feel and balance (very subjective qualities) are critical too. Even then, practice is the thing that will MAKE you accurate. Just MHO.

my ties are to 22 stated facts listed earlier....and countless trophies collecting dust on my shelf standing in tribute to a fine american piece of craftsmanship made by my connecticut fore-fathers.[;)]
i dont LOVE my guns. i enjoy what my guns ALLOW me to accomplish.[;)]

the lighter the gun, the more movement will occur during timed and rapid fire. comp.shooting isnt about comfort, its about holding that gun still for 6 to 10 seconds keeping a perfect sight alignment. thats it, then you put it down. granted, people are different and body mass changes. some people cant hold 52oz guns. but 52oz guns were built to do a job. if you cant hold it, its not for you. get a lighter one. but the fact will still remain, it will move more. regardless of the gun, youre dealing with 40,000 psi of charge going off. two things tame it, human ability and craftsmanship.
such is the drawback of trying to play defensive linebacker with a offensive ends body. all the gear in the world aint gonna help you.[:o)]
just like bowling balls, not everyone throws a 20 lb ball. i prefer 48oz guns myself, but can hold 54 just fine.
point isnt to teach shooting here, point is......tell me how many OPTIONS a model 41 or brand x offers a shooter?
make that point #23. HIGH STANDARD offers its shooter the MOST OPTIONS to custom fit a gun to the owner...BAR NONE.

I love HI-Standards,,,,,,,I have been epoxy-em,welding-em, silver sodering-em for years....I made a good living trading-em on all kinds of guns........A beautiful gun that the manufactures just cut corners on. For years they had metallurgy problems like so many times shooters would say..... Wallie-1-hole...how come I can shoot 20 rounds without a jam and on timed fire or rappid fire i get a jam after jam..... I took it to so & so and he put in a new extractor, then so & so polised everything, and then so & so put a new ejector and so & so cut a little off the recoil spring and on & on.......I would say U my friend have a tiger tooth in your barrel.......the best i can do to explain it, is that there is a hard carbon deposit in the chamber and when the barrel get's hot,,like shooting rappid fire, this little high spot comes out and puts pressure on the case resulting in very hard extraction ....and after it cools it's fine.....

got a call i will continue this later
