.50 cal...legitimate in Law Enforcement?
A long running debate among us cops. Does the .50 cal have a legit purpose in a Law Enforcement setting or should it be left to the guys in the military. I personaly think it is way too much for L.E.

i did say massad was part time, not the entire department, but this is intresting to know that smaller departments are not considered "real police officers", i'll remember that next time i get pulled over[:)], or the next time one gets killed in the line of duty i'll point out his department wasn't big enough for him to get proper honors
Way to twist someones words around. Please show me where I said small town cops do not have lawful authority, or do not deserve an honor guard for giving up their life in the lne of duty.
The point was, and is, that being a small town cop doesn't make you are a seasoned veteran. Just as being a paper or steel plate shooting champion doesn't mean you aren't going to piss your pants when someone pulls a gun on you.0 -
damn! the double team
as far as turning words around sounds like pot calling the kettle black, seasoned veterans was never used, the definition of a "police officer" was, and i maybe i read it incorrectly, but from what i understand from both of you is that a police officer from a small town is not a real officer, and now lack of experience may disqualify them as "real cops" as well
at what point in your own career did you refer to yourself as a police officer? after you where hired? 20 years into the job? after a shooting?, i'm curious as to what makes a police officer respectable in your eyes0 -

Go back and re-read the posts.
You are the one who brought up "real cop", the argument started with Txs saying "real-live grizzled veteran" and I used the term seasoed veteran. You and only you ever suggested that small town cops are not real cops. I and Txs only stated that small town cops don't see the action a big city cop sees making them veterans.0 -

what a way to avoid the question

Not to divert this conversation, but please don't refer to Ayoob as a cop. That's just a misconception he fosters.
He was once an unpaid reserve cop with a backwoods PD where you could count it's full-time members on the fingers of one hand. He's milked this to the point where many assume he must be a real-live grizzled veteran.
He's just a student of others activities and an entertaining wordsmith. Sort of like "Sheriff" Jim Wilson. [;)]
and as far as me pissing my pants, you have no ideal what type of person i really am, nor due you have a clue of my past, when push comes to shove the same thing applies to mear mortals you rely on your training, at one point in every officer or soldier they had to rely on what they have trained to do, no one was born "seasoned"0 -
I wasn't avoiding the question, I just thought it was rhetorical considering I had already explained that only you called small town cops not "real cops". I think of every cop as respectable the moment they put on the badge, it is up to each individual to maintain that level of respect. Being a respectable officer, however, does not make you an expert on police, or shooting tactics.
"and as far as me pissing my pants, you have no ideal what type of person i really am, nor due you have a clue of my past"---Just as you have no clue about the 99% of cops you like to talk about, but you base your assumptions on the few you have known.0 -
Oh well cops & preachers, whats the difference both to lazy to work & to chicken too steal. 0 -

+1 [:D]
Looks like we see eye-to-eye here. [;)]
Actually, we would probably find a whole lot negative to say about most "gun writers," if we only knew them better.
I can also tell you this: The second feller you mentioned knows the first feller you mentioned, and he don't like him either. And I don't like either one. [xx(]0 -

i for one have spent time with both of them on several occasions, and know they get along very well, i cannot see bob badmouthing a guy that wrote bobs first gun rag bio, and choose to shoot in the same squad, i guess i'll have to pull him aside this year and ask his opinion, unless where not talking about the same bob vogel, 3 time national law enforcement champion, 2007 ssp national champion0 -
Who mentioned Bob? Txs made reference to Ayoob and Wilson, and I referred to them as the first feller and the second feller. I don't know this Bob. 0 -
oh! you mean old lady wilsons kid?, nevermind 0 -
heck instead of a single .50BMG out of the chopper-just give 'em a chopper like the one from the movie Blue Thunder[:D]--on a side note our small town city PD was only required to qualify with firearms every 6 months-I hope they at least got to the range once a month at the very least. 0 -
Well, since you mentioned it, I HAVE shot against "civilians", and other LEOs as well as many military personel in both GSSF and IDPA.(including the vaunted Army Rangers) I live about 30 minutes from a large military base and I have shot many competitions at the base. I have come in 3rd and 2nd place on several occasions and I have even won a few "unsanctioned" matches. Anybody can talk about how well they shoot at paper targets, but when your target actually shoots back, wanting to kill you, the situation is very, very different. Don't talk about what you don't know, such as my personal training, experiences or credentials. Or tell me to do something that you have no idea that I have been there, done that, got the trophy. And any cop, small town or LAPD, is still a cop. We all face the same things, maybe not as often, but we do all the same. And if "marksman" offends you, what else would you use to describe the act of shooting a firearm with accuracy and proficiency? 0 -

If a cop can use it to blow the engine out of a speeding SUV so innocent children don't get run over, I say use it!0 -

you've shot competition, and you don't know that marksmen is the lowest ranking?
i've shot the entire classifier weak hand only and scored higher than marksman, so yes for the amount of time money, and practice i have put in anything lower than master would be an insult
and yes i have been shot at, and i know exactly how i would mentally react0 -
I think you're nit-picking at terminology, that's all. I don't get caught up in ranks or titles, but I do have the equivalnet of "master" under Georgia's curent firearms qualifications, shooting 100% on the course. I believe we have possibly gotten off to a rough start, 1911. I took offense to your summary of cops as a whole. I think we both love to shoot, regardless of whether it's for glory or just the fun of the sport, that much we can agree on. I, for one, probably spend anywhere from 5-10 hours a week shooting everything from my Glock, my 30-06 or my M4, spending more money on bullets than my wife likes. I love to shoot, period, and thankfully, I have never been fired upon, but I feel confident in my training and my reaction. That being said, please don't think ALL cops are the same....alot of us actually know how to shoot. Until next "debate". 0
