Since we are on the topic, and for those who are not familar with the K-Hornet, here is a picture that should help to visualize the advantages of the K over the standard Hornet. The cartridge on the left is a factory Remington 40 grain cartridge. The shell on the right is what it looks like after I fire form it in my old Winchester. I am getting about an 10% gain in case volume.

Hello Wally,
In a strong action (e.g. Winchester Model 1885, Ruger No. 3, Model 70/Ruger 77), boosting the factory load by 1 - 2 grains is not a problem. You just have to consider the fact that the factory loaded ammo is well under the actual maximums (due to the percieved liability issues).
It is prudent to mention that all reloads over the maximum listed loads should be worked up carefully. Always inspect for signs of over pressure (e.g. sticky extraction, flattened/bulged/extruded primers, split cases, etc.). That said, the 22 Hornet is easily capable of a lot more than the current reloading manuals suggest. I have a number of old (better than 50-years) reloading manuals that list significantly hotter loads than the modern manuals. Over the years, all of the manufacturers have reduced their "maximum" suggested loads... all with the intent too avoid any potential lawsuits.
Hey yer ownself, Bert,
I've got a major problem telling someone on a public forum like this to "Just up their load by 2 grains and get the 3200 FPS desired". How about the thousands of shooters who aren't privileged to own an 1885 Winchester or something comparably strong, rifles like the old Savage 340 (like mine) or the thousands of Savage 99s. Reloading should be a very careful and tempered business. Making flat statements can and will get newbies into serious trouble so your suggestion that prudence be observed is well taken. Some here don't see that as necessary, instead, boldly suggest dumping in some more powder.
Most of my manuals are 50s and 60s vintage because that's when I started loading. None show a 45 grain Hornet approaching 3200. I have the latest Sierra manual because of a recent 7MM STW purchase and it doesn't show those kind of velocities either. I don't doubt given enough of a very fast powder, a light bullet and a strong action, you could push a Hornet well beyond what's published in the common reloading manuals. I just don't think it's wise to "Just up their load by 2 grains and get the 3200..." That's asking for trouble.
See ya in Reno.

Hello Wally,
I do not believe that Classic (or I) was referring to a 45 grain bullet @3200 fps. We both were talking about the 35 grain V-Max bullet.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone again at the Reno show the end of next month[^].0 -

If you get a K-hornet you can get pretty close to 3,000 FPS with a 33- 40 grain bullet. Out to two-hundred yards it is great. The powder charge is low so reloading is really cheap. The noise is also minimal so shooting in a populated area does not scare the natives much.
I get just shy of 3300 fps with my K-Hornet. 12.0 grains of 2400 under a 35 grain Hornady V-max bullet. When I load 40 grain HPs, I get just a tad over 3100 fps. I shoot an old modified Winchester Model 1885 single shot rifle, with a 28-inch barrel[^]
Imagine that...an 1885 Winchester.....
My favorate for the current run is the Ruger 77/22H. I have played with the standard blue/walnut model, and the SS/Lam varmint model. They will shoot tight groups out of the box with a cool barrel. A little massaging like, pillar bedding the action, free floating and lapping the barrel, and a good trigger job will, from my experience be a boon to superb accuracy. Both rifles I mentioned like that 11.2 grains of H110, and a 40 grain V-Max or Ballistic Tip. To function thru the magazine, one has to trim the neck back just a touch to seat the bullet properly. These rifles shoot these loads to MODEL(Minute Of Deers Ear Lobe) at 200 yards.0 -
Wally, if you would learn to read the wordsas written no where did I mention a 45 grain bullet,, go back and read the information I did actually put there..I know you just wanted to start poop with me again as usual, but this time you are flat out wrong and not man enough to admit it.. you ask for the load that I used and you got it. Man up boy.
quote:Clouder, you aint right on this, right out of the cartridge book. page 19, Same load I use,, 35 Grain V-Max,, Powder FL, grains 13.5, velocity 3200 FPS energy 795, source Hornady Factory load..
35 Grain V-Max,, Powder, H-110, Grains 11.2,, velocity 3000, energy 725,, Hodgon Load..This is my other load I use..
As far as a newbie using anything said in here to reload with he would have to be crazy.. No where did I tell anyone to use my recipe for reloading. Man you sure add a lot of Bull Shi* to a conversation, but of course that is just what you do best..
I would have gone into detail about the reloading procedure for make an ballistacally efficient .22 hornet round for you but that would just be a waste of time on someone as yourself that knows it all..[;)]0 -

Nowhere did you tell them NOT to take your load seriously either, classic, that's the problem. Instead you blithely proclaim that you get 3200 PLUS out of your 22 Hornet and then say how you did it, "Just up their load by 2 grains..." Brilliant, Goober.
Your loading procedure really must be special, classic, to change the ballistic efficiency of a bullet. A bullet's efficeincy is what it is and even your 50 years of foolin' around isn't going to change it.
So, please, please, don't offer any information, advice, or counsel; you aren't qualified to tell me anything. I still consider you deficient.
Clouder..
PS. I was wrong when I said a 22 Hornet could not be loaded 'hot' enough to obtain 3200+ FPS. It was my experience with 45 grain bullets that led me to say that, however I was still wrong.0 -
OH jeeez,, the sky is going to fall, the know it all wonder admitted to being wrong.. That didnt hurt did it. Awwww it must have at least bruised your inflated ego just a bit.. But thanks for admitting you didnt know what you were talking about..It probably wont be the last time..[;)][:0][:0] Buy the way, what is this word? quote:efficeincy[:o)][:o)][:o)]
Again you try putting words in,, I didnt mention a bullet, the term round includes the entire cartridge..so I load efficient (that is how it is spelled) rounds. OH!, and balistics are the performances of a round and can be changed by using different components. Listen and you might learn something.0 -

Efficeincy is efficiency as badly misspelled as your balistics is. And you thought you went over that with a fine-tooth comb, didn't you?[:D] Ask for help, it's no shame.

We finally established that Wally boy is not the perfect know it all that he claims.. Thanks Wally.. We know everyone makes mistakes, it is just hard for some to admit, though you are getting better.[:X][;)] 0 -

I wouldn't exactly call it a "war", but it was a refreshing change of pace for the GD forum... who would have thunk it, an actual GUN topic on Gunbroker![:0][:0][^]
We need a few more just like it... people might actually start believing that this a gun related forum[}:)]0 -
