22 hornet
Hi, im new to shooting i have a ruger 22lr that my cousin gave me and i was wondering if it will shoot the remington 22 hornet round??[}:)]

I have a friend who brought his along to a prairie dog shoot. Ballistically, from what I could see, they're right in line with a 22 magnum. Except you can hand load them. I've wanted one since I shot his (Sako)...But make mine a "K". 0 -

Taurus built the Raging Hornet which got me interested. Until I checked the price of ammo. $55-$60 a box. One could plink up a lot of $$ with one of those. reloading would help. 0 -

I've had three over the years, and have loved them all. With proper loads and carefull shot placement their good for squirrel. I've also taken numerous fox, a handfull of coyotes and one bobcat with mine.
I like'm mostly because they make a nice light walking around rifle.0 -
If you get a K-hornet you can get pretty close to 3,000 FPS with a 33- 40 grain bullet. Out to two-hundred yards it is great. The powder charge is low so reloading is really cheap. The noise is also minimal so shooting in a populated area does not scare the natives much. 0 -
Dont know where you guys been buying 22 hornet ammo, but most I ever paid was 20 bucks a box for 25.. I reload my own now and it is NOt A short range cartdrige with a muzzle velocity of over 3200 FPS..I have killed many deer and a bunch of ground hogs with mine..we can buy 20 rounds for 15 bucks down here now. and its getting cheaper as they have started to manufacture more of it.. 0 -

Even with a my K Hornet, shooting a 35 grain bullet, velocities will NOT exceed 3000 FPS (more than once[;)])

Not knowing how many rounds in the boxes you priced (I assume 20?) I'm just throwing this out for comparison -- Cabela's has Sellier & Bellot 45-gr SP at $139.99 per 200. I don't know how much, exactly, once shipping and other fees are added on.0 -
I've got an old Model 43 Winchester in .22hornet. It's a great little varmint rifle. It's not the most accurate hornet, best is about 3 shots in an 1-1/4" at 100yrds. But I've killed fox at 250 yrds with it. As posted above, it's a cheap round to load, case only holds 12-12.5 grains of powder. Dave 0 -
The little hornet is a great little round. I handload most of mine and the 33 gr. speer is wicked. Don't hot rod the little round and cases will last forever it seems. Can't tell you how many times my old Kimber has been shot but no signs of wear. Lowest serial # i've seen too, H* supposedly the first to leave the factory. Vernon 0 -

I love mine even though I dont shoot it that often, its a great varmit gun. Ive taken coyote out to at least 150yrds that I can remember, probably further. I have taken crows out to 250 yrs or so, I guess its one of those that grow on you. As of now CZ is the only company Im aware of who chambers the cartridge. I have a Rem Model 700 BDL and a New England Handi Rifle chambered for it. The Handi Rifle has a Bull Barrel and is very accurate.
Edit:I stocked up on .22 Hornet ammo before the prices went through the roof. Every box I have has 50 Rds to a box, and I didnt pay no where near $50.00 for it.0 -

Really a fun round if reloaded with black powder. ( do remember to clean VERY well after shooting) 0 -
loaded with 11.2 grains of H110, and a 40 grain V-Max or ballistic tip, you can get an honest 2800 FPS. This is a gun for squirrels to deer out to 200 yards...trust me...it works. 0 -
Clouder, you aint right on this, right out of the cartridge book. page 19, Same load I use,, 35 Grain V-Max,, Powder FL, grains 13.5, velocity 3200 FPS energy 795, source Hornady Factory load..So there is my source, so much for skepticism..[^]
35 Grain V-Max,, Powder, H-110, Grains 11.2,, velocity 3000, energy 725,, Hodgon Load..This is my other load I use..

I said in my first reply to this I handload most all of mine. When good ol Walley-world stopped selling guns at several stores I stocked up on all kinds of ammo, Hornets were $24.95 a box at the time. I got them on clearence for $11.00 the little check-out girl said "you want all 19 boxes?" ......yes please, and could you double bag those. Just think if a hornet as a 22 magnum on steroids. Not even close... the standard 22 Hornet can launch a 40 grain bullet at 2900 fps, whereas the 22 Magnum Rimfire is limited to about 2000 fps. The 22 Hornet has an effective range out to 300 yards. The 22 WMR is pushing its outer limits at 150 yards, and realistically ie best suited to 100 yards (or less).
If you want to talk about the K-Hornet, it is capable of 3100+ fps and an effective range of 350 yards. The K-Hornet is nearly equal to the 222 Remington.0
