Best 9mm round for stopping bad guys
I just bought a Ruger P85MII on the auction board. I am retired Military (1July07) and hated the 9mm as a side arm. Hated the loss of the 45. Anyway, the gun was new in box and never fired and I purchased as the only bid on the weapon for $295.00. Reading some reviews on this weapon, it will apparently digest all commercial produced rounds without problems.
For personal/home defense, what is the best 9mm round? I own a S&W 686 4 inch and a Browning High Power chambered in 40 cal.
The 9mm was just a fluke, but now that I have it, what is the best man stopper commercially produced?

Thanks for the input, but can you be more specific on the JHP? For example, long ago when I purchased the 357, I read in a couple of gun magazines the best round for stopping a man would be a 125 grain JHP shot out of a 4 inch barrel in the 357 caliber.
What would be best in the 9mm world? 115, 124, 147 grain? +p or not +p. There have been so many new JHP designs, and for showing my age and ignorance here, the last time I was routinely picking up gun magazines and researching such things, the black talon round was being pulled off the shelves. Is the winchester, remmington, corbon rounds any better than the other, or just any JHP is about the same? I'm trying to be lazy and not research all this stuff. I figured I could get a quick and accurate response from a gun forum such as this to keep me from that?

I'm not sure anybody on this forum has the expertise required to compare the terminal behavior of the bullets. Try several quality brands of JHP, find the one that cycles and groups the best for you, and then use that. 0 -

The Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P load has been remarked on favorably almost everywhere. Out of a 4" barrel it gives velocity of 1220 fps.

One of the best man stoppers for the 9mm has been a well placed 124 gr +P JHP, The Hornady XTP and Remington Golden Saber are great examples of this:

Although many people will say that the 9mm is underpowered, all that is required for it to be an great manstoper is proper shot placement. As a Navy Seal once stated:
"The 9mm might not as powerful as I would like, but when I shoot someone twice in the chest and once in the head they are still dead."0 -
The bad guy won't know the difference if he is hit with a remington golder saber, a speer gold dot or whatever, its bullet placement that is far more important than bullet type. 0 -

Not to give you a smart answer, but the best round is the one that hits where you aim.
i am a fan of the .45 ACP, and believe it is superb for a defensive pistol or revolver round. it is my choice.
however, if the 9mm is what you have, then the 9mm is what you have, and will work when properly placed, a rule that applies to every other round, including the .45.
do not let anyone try and convince you that the 9mm round is ineffective. i have seen people expire and people that had expired as a result from being the recipient of a 9mm slug to the head, neck, chest or abdomen.0 -

Like they said before, one that works every time in your pistol. No one can truthfully say what is best. Too many variables. I personally like Speer Gold Dots. After you choose, the three most important things are:
1. Shot placement
2. Shot placement.
3. Shot placement.

I appreciate all the answers guys. For those of you who don't care for the round, I'm kind of with you in that I never thought I would own one, but here I sit with one. I will continue to keep the 357 as the primary home defense weapon, but since I have the 9 now, thought it appropriate to find the best defensive round. Appreciate all the feedback. 0 -
One week before they banned the Winchester Black Talons in the mid 90's, I went out and bought a case of 9mm @8.95 per box. Seeing them go for over $30-$40 a box, I might just auction them off soon. When I had a 9mm pistol, I keep the clips staggered with Talons and Hydra Shocks. 0 -
