Winchester factory engraving and bbl. inscriptions

Thought I would post a common misconception regarding Winchester factory engraving. Alot of people seem to be under the impression that a gun engraved in the factory always had the bbl. inscriptions rolled on in such a manner as to leave room for the scrollwork. This was true for guns that were put together with the intention of being engraved from the start. However that is not always the case with factory engraved guns. Many guns that were done in the factory were guns that were sent in to be upgraded where the bbl. inscription was too near the reciever to allow for the complete scrollwork. In a case like this the inscription was not struck off and rerolled the scrollwork was engraved in the manner where it came up to the lettering and continued on the other side. Many people seem to think that this was only done on guns by outside engravers but that is not always the case. Many people sent in guns to be upgraded and the Custom Shop was happy to oblige.

    Pauleen;I can only add one little tidbit: Why in the world would someone want something engraved by a master engraver and NOT DEMAND the engraver sign his/her work.

    If I could ever afford your services, I would want to tell my kids, ,look who engraved this and here is her signature. Best Tom

    In the factory it was their policy that we didn't sign the work unless the customer requested it. I never really got a reason why. The only thing I can think of is that they knew all of us were doing work on the outside and didn't want to give us any free promotion. This is just a guess but it is the only reason I can think of. The guns we did on the outside we almost always signed. That's why I tell people if the gun is signed there is a better chance it was not done in the factory. With no records on alot of these guns, if it was done by a factory engraver, I see no loss in value.

    There is a gentleman in Maryland who has offered me a 20ga. and 16ga. model 12. they are claiming these are factory engraved, could you please verify. thanks Pauline. They want 10k for the pair.

    Definitely not factory engraved. Checkering is also the wrong pattern for a pigeon grade.

    I have looked at some of your other auctions of your "best Winchester's you can get your hands on". You are either really unknowing, or real enterprising. A 92 Trapper Carbine in 218 Bee? Right, OK.

    You are dealing with the absolute best Winchester Experts in the business on here. Try reading some of the Stick topics at the top of the forum, that are Winchester related. You night try asking these guys and gals on here some questions, before you start your Winchester auctions.

    I never even looked at the date on that Spider...but a lot of his auctions seem to show some signs of stretching things.

    I have not listed a 92 trapper in 218 bee. But I'll choose to not take your smart ass comment to heart. The guy that has that factory engraved gun still insists that it is what he says. I'll be the first to admit, I'm no gun expert. He tells me what it is, and that is the way I list it.
