Friend of mine drew his pistol
A long time friend of mine who I sold a pistol to last summer told me this morning that he drew it on someone and I didn't know how to really take it.
My first reaction was was it warrented but now I think he did good. what do you think?
He told me he was parking his car downtown Seattle, in one of the unattended lots after dark and just as he pulled into the stall and started opening his door a man was right there and kind of startled him.
The man was shoving a ticket stub towards my friend and saying it was good for all night and wanted 5.00 for it.
My friend told him he wasn't interested. These lots do not have attendants after dark and you pay a machine and it will give you the stub for your dash.
After he told the guy he wasn't interested the guy got in between the open door and car so my friend couldn't close the door and that is when he said he was afraid the guy was going to pull a knife or gun so all he did was raise his pistol and racked a round into the chamber.
My friend told me the vagrants eyes became the size of dinner plates before he took off across the parking lot like an Olympics hurdler and down an alley.
I also wondered, how many times across America this happens every day and goes unreported, where an armed citizen is aggresivly hassled in a high crime area at night uses a weapon to scare someone off.

Why make such a big deal out of running some derelect off? I've done it a number of times. Whether you produce a weapon or not to get your point across, as long as you are left unmolested, you are okay. Being in fear of attack is all the justification you need to tell a cop or judge. Of course you must comply with the standards a "normal" person would. Waving a weapon around like some kind of retard is not something a normal person would do and you will (and should) suffer for it.
Having had a heart attack, I refuse to roll in the dirt with anyone for any reason (unless they are female [:p] ). If someone wants to get physical, they might regret it for a few seconds. If every man can be considered a potential rapist, then every derelect should be considered a potential carjacker or highwayman.0 -
From what I've read, I think he over reacted. But I wasn't there. So I may have done the same thing, if it had been me. 0 -

He did everything 100% right. Racking a round in the chamber usually will scare even the most hardened gang banger into rethinking his plan.
The only thing that he could have done on top of what he did...would be to say "yer a perty boy" after he racked his round.

I was in St. Louis this summer on the way east from a cross country RV trip. My wife, a very poor RV pilot was driving and I was sittling, white knuckled, in the passenger seat.
She managed to cut some guy off in traffic without actually killing him, and he became quite irate, with good cause.
When he approached the RV I went ahead and put the pistol in hand out of sight.
He walked up and began screaming at me through the passenger window. I cracked the window and waited for him to take a breath and said, "Sir, I'll be glad to let you get in here and ride with her, my odds are better out there than in here."
He blinked and hesitated then cracked a small smile. I apologized and all was OK.
I am truly grateful I didn't have to kill him.0 -
I forgot to mention he had his 13 year old daughter in the car with him and the gun was in the conole of the car, not on him.
He said he never pointed it or waved it. Just a firm rack of the slide and then pointed straight up while he looked at the intimidator without saying another word.
I originally thought he slightly over reacted but and would hate to see him get into trouble with the law over a stupid act with a firearm, but I would also hate to see him and his daughter dead at the hand of a crack head with a knife.
All I know is that everything turned out ok considering what happened.0 -

I'd say 99% right. From my experience, homeless criminals work in packs, so... why reveal your advantage (your gun) unless you are about to use it...?0 -

it would have been wiser to slam the door on him and put some distance in between before reaching for his piece.
I only pulled something on someone once. I was walking thru this entryway thing of some apartment real early in the morning before dawn, and this bum about steps out of the bushes to get into the entryway I was almost out of, asking somewhat aggressively for me to buy something. I thought it might be a ruse, looked behind me real quick to make sure I wasn't getting trapped by an accomplice while flicking out the knife. I held it behind me in a ready posture and "no thanks" once was good enough for him.
there's been a few times when I needed to but didn't have anything. a few times when I could have ended up shot, stabbed or beat to death but it just didn't turn out that way.0 -

We are beating a dead horse with some of the responses. Their common sense gun training must be Gunslinger 101. They will learn only when they lose their permits to carry. I in fact had to go in front of a state hearing board once for presenting my weapon at a lunitic during a traffic stop. Lesson learned NEVER to get it out unless you plan on using it. I took an ass beating thru a car window and finally had enough .. told the guy to quit or I would shoot him. I was reinstated the permit, paid back wages and the Police officer who revoked my permit was terminated.0 -
If I understand this correctly, your friend was sitting in his car with the door open. The derelict positioned himself between your friend and the open door making it impossible for him to get out of his car or close the door or back up without possible damage to the door.
I don't know how a judge would look at it, but that's enough justification for me to put my gun into my hand. I wouldn't point it at the derelict yet, but I would be ready to. I'd worry about the 100K lawsuit later.
Maybe I'm a little claustrophobic, but I can't and won't tolerate people getting that close even if I don't consider them a threat. We have a man at my church who likes to get right in your face when he's talking to you. When he gets in my face I back off two or three steps. He advances two or three steps. He has backed me up all the way across the Church Lobby more than one time. All others I simply tell them to "BACK OFF". If that doesn't work, I back them off.
When I worked at the maximum security prison in Mecklenburg County we had a sergeant who had at least one inmate million dollar lawsuit going against him at all times. One of the officers asked him if it didn't bother him with that hanging over his head all the time. The sergeant said "The joke's on them. I don't have a million dollars."0 -
I had a similar incident to happen to me, that I had to intimidate a man with a unloaded weapon. At the time I was a little baseball coach and every day I had to pick up one or two kids and take them to practice and their parents would pick them up after practice. There was no CCW in New Mexico at the time, but carrying a loaded weapon in your vehicle was legal. Before picking up all the kids I would unload my 1911 and put it under the seat and put the mag in my back pocket. One of the boys was always leaving something in my truck. I never let them in the truck without me but never left a load gun in my truck. After practice one day I went to get my hair cut. When leaving I notice a man following about 40 yards behind me as I walked back to my vehicle. I got in and locked the doors and started the engine and this man was tapping on my passenger side window. I rolled it down about two inches and he asked for a ride. When I refused to give him a ride he began to try to open the door then pull on the window. At that time I reached under the seat and retrieved my 1911. When he saw the gun he instantly let go and started walking across the parking lot. I knew the gun was unloaded and I was sitting on the magazine but that was all the intimidating that was needed to end the confrontation. Luckily! Big lesson learned for me. I did go back in the place of business and called the police because there were several women working there and I was worried about their safety. The police found the man and told him he was lucky it was me and not one of them women because they carry guns and would have pulled the trigger (which was not true but that's what they told him). 0 -
I think his reaction was appropriate. when you have no place to back out of a situation He has every right to deffend his person and property. 0
