Chicago Bears really miss him. It funny. A team is winning and a team suddenly has righteous standards and virtues to uphold.
When the team sucks, those virtues go out the window.
The Bears suck right know. I expect them to hire a thug or two this off season then be shocked when the players have some run-ins with the police.

Clint Murchison sold the Cowboys to H.R. "Bum" Bright in 1984. Bright sold them to Jerry Jones in 1989. Murchison sold out because of failing health, not because of some alleged dislike of Landry. He had given Landry a long contract when hiring him in from the Giants in 1959 and allowed Tex Schram to silence critics in the mid 60's by extending it to 10 years.
Bright, on the other hand, disliked how Landry led the Cowboys during the late 80s when they failed to make the play-offs. He, along with many fans, felt the game had passed Landry by. The 20 straight years that Landry led the Cowboys to the playoffs ended while Bright was the owner so it's not surprising that he felt that way. Some fans actually blamed Bright more than Landry for that failure because of restrictions on draft and trade activities imposed during his tenure.
Do you guys remember the early Cowboys??? Don Perkins, Pettis Norman, or Mike Gaecter? You do, the how about Obert "Little O" Logan??? Can you name the Original Doomsday linemen: Willie, Lilly, Jethro and George? Remember it was Willie Towns, not Larry Cole who was in that line originally.
I blush to relate that I thought the wrong team left Dallas in 1963. The Dallas Texans had actually won the 1962 championship over the Oilers, despite Abner Haynes "kick to the wind" miscall after the coin toss for overtime.
Come to think of it, I thought the name "Cowboys" was silly in comparison to some of the other names considered...Colt 45s, Stallions, etc. But what did I know? I was only 13 when they started.
And I considered "Bum" Bright an interloper who was unfit to share a nickname with Wade's daddy.0 -

In the sense that other teams have fans, i.e. despite eternal bad times, no Dallas has not developed such a fan base. On the other hand, that phrase "America's Team" is not pure hype. In any stadium that Dallas plays you will find home-town residents who come to cheer the Cowboys. Some cities were famous for giving Dallas greater support than their own team. I think that has changed as parity arrived in the NFL. This year there are 4 stand out teams and everyone else has parity...but with the exception of New England and Indianapolis, no team, including Dallas has been exceptional since the turn of this century. I still support them.
My grandmother rooted for the Cowboys. My father rooted for the Cowboys, but you could not really tell because the only game he wanted to watch was a blow-out. He had a superstition that if he started to watch, things would go wrong. Funny thing is, he was right.
When I was younger I stuck through thick and thin. Dad'd system did not work for me. I turned off the TV during the "Ice Bowl" but when I turned it back on Bart Starr had scored anyway.
I later developed a superstition of my own. For a period of about 15 years, if I went on a business trip to a city with a pro football team, that team was going to the Superbowl. Yes, I was in Pittsburgh several years in the 70, San Francisco in the 80s (except that year that I had to go to Chicago for my board exams). I was in Boston in 1976. Of course, I was born in Dallas, my parents were born in Dallas, so I should probably get back up there this year just to ensure their success. Of course, I've never been to Green Bay, or Cincinnati, and my trips to New Orleans didn't have too much effect...but hey, nobody is perfect.
I have decided that Dad was right. Dallas plays better when I don't watch. Every time I switched to the Detroit game we dropped a pass or fumbled on the goal line. The Tivo shut down with 2:16 left in the game so I have only seen 2 second clips of the winning drive on ESPN.
Since I've followed Dallas since 1960 and been happy when they won and sad when they lost, I'd say I'm a fan. I don't have a room in my house painted Silver-Blue. (Actually a bathroom is maroon and white but the house came that way and this IS Aggieland.)
But, yes, I think there are Dallas fans and I'm one.0 -

If you were the big Dallas fan you say you are you would have known that Clint Murcheson, couldn't stand Tom Landry. He sold the team to Jerry Jones, not only because of his health, but because he couldn't stand the play calling of Landry. He stated this publically many times.

Did you read my whole post? I know I talk a lot but you missed the main point.
Clint Murchison did NOT sell the Cowboys to Jerry Jones. He sold them to "Bum" Bright. Bum Bright hated Landry and HE sold the Cowboys to Jerry Jones.
You are right about the reason the owner of the Cowboys sold out. You are missing the point about WHO that owner was.
Clint Murchison DIED March 30, 1987. He Couldn't have sold to Jerry Jones in 1989.0 -

I stumbled across this group while trying to find the current fate of Lance Rentzel. When T.O. broke one of Lance's records last week ESPN acknowledged the fact with a comment I hadn't heard in 25 years:
"Lance Rentzel was great on the fly pattern". At least he didn't say "the down and out" which did circulate at the time.
Never found anything else more current about Rentzle than references to his 1973 book "When All the Laughter Died In Sorrow"...the equivalent to "Why I Did It"
