A Peruvian friend sends us Panetone fruity yeast cake that's tops.
I believe the Italians also make it.

Try Southern Supreme in Bear Creek, NC if you want the best in the world. Hardly any fruit, mostly nuts. Everything they have is good. Yes it is costly, but worth it. I go down there couple times a year, for the last 20 or so. It is not in the middle of nowhere, it is on the far edge of nowhere, but I would love to live there myself. It really is a family business, and everything is made right there. I guarantee you have never had anything like it. Its not a $2 Walmart fruitcake for sure. 0 -
Yuck! I found out today on a cooking show that my wife flipped by that a PROPERLY (whatever that means) prepared fruit cake has an average shelf life of 20 YEARS! 0 -
My grandmother bought my dad a fruitcake for christmas one year, the next year my dad gave that same one to his sister, then it went to an uncle and so on and so forth. That same fruitcake was passed around for about 15 years, it was finally tossed when the wrapping tore. 0 -

Now!! big800 has got it right! I remember these cakes made from scratch by my old NC Grandmother. This old girl was a strict tetotaler Pentecostal Holiness person whom my sister and I would tease by saying,"Nanny drinks gin.........ger-ale" which would really set her off. But buddies, she'd make those cakes in October and sprinkle them with brandy every day until Thanksgiving. She'd keep them covered with a towel so they wouldn't dry out. When you took a bite of one of those cakes you'd know why they were so moist. After a couple of slices you'd be about as happy as you'd ever get, and Grandma was right there feasting on 'em with a big smile!! 0 -
I had an Aunt that made them...one was dark and the other was light..they were good, preffered the ligher one.

Some are nasty, some good and some great.
My honey makes one with the standard jellied fruit and a date bread mix.
Quick and delicious.
Best I ever had was a freeby sent by a vendor when I worked for Stokes >30 years ago.

When I went through SERE school in 1971, the last evening of the survival phase I was given a green ration can from WWII that contained fruit cake. It wasn't the best in the world, but remarkably it was still edible.[:0] 0 -
They are not right. I hate 'em.
There is a joke commercial on tv now where a person gets a fruitcake for Christmas. Next Christmas, they give the same fruitcake to someone else.
Next year, that person gives it to someone else.
After seven years, it comes back to the first person, just as edible as ever.0 -
