older calibers
Does anybobdy still use older rds. like 250 savage,303 british etc.
when I go to hunting camps seems like everbody has all the new short magsor 338 win mag are deer getting tougher that the .300 svage can't handle them anymore

I have a 22-250, a 6mm Rem, a .243 and a .35 Rem. No magnums in that crowd. I also have a M70 in 25 WSSM just for the modern touch 0 -
.303 British is still popular. Lots of military stuff around. Lots of enfields also around. Many converted to sporters for hunting. [:D] 0 -
I hunt deer horseback, with a 30-30 Winchester with iron sights. Nothing else. Two years ago we were riding down off a crest and came upon two hunters walking up the trail. The one guy said I was cheating riding a horse to hunt deer. Really?, I asked. Look at you, high powered, scoped rifle, laser rangefinder, Harris bipod, and a two way radio. I have a horse and an old Winchester, and you say I'm cheating?!!

Last functioning centerfire rifle I owned was a 99 Savage in .300 Savage. I've accumulated the makings for a couple of 7x57 Mausers, a 6.5x55 Mauser, a .30-06, and the new kid on the block, a 7.62x39 on a small ring Mauser action. Also have a 7.65 Mauser barrel and a '91 Argentine Mauser receiver and bolt, but need too many parts to rate that as a gun in the making. As far as using "older" rounds, all of the preceding are quite modern compared to my deer rifle -- a .50 caliber flintlock. 0 -
I have a couple of rifles in newer calibers but it seems that my old savage 99 is the one that always makes it to the woods with me marlin 336 in 30-30 is a favorite also 0 -

The .303 British FMJ round has killed (and wounded) more african game than any other. Tons of shipments of surplus rounds along with the rifles were dumped on the "colonies" after WWI. Joe 0 -

I hunt with an old mannlicher 8x56 and my girlfriend uses a savage 99 in .300 savage. That is as new of gun as we need and they do the job every time. 0 -

.303Brit is still being used here.
There's a lot of old rifles still in circulation here that uses that.
We get Sellier & Bellot ammunition in softpoint and as FMJ, as well as one or two other types.
Personally I use 8x58RD (RimmedDanish), which was discontinued in the mid/late 60's. I have a lot of original rounds from one of the last runs they made in oct, nov and dec 1966.
Then I also plan to use the .45/70 (isn't the cartridge from 1873?) that I bought just recently.0 -
I may take my 119 year old HiWall out this weekend and kill a deer with it too, it's chambered in 45/120.Dave[:D] 0 -

You can find factory loads for it, if ya don't mind $2.00 a round. I have brass ($35.00 per 50), so I hand load for it.

My son and I still hunt with a few old family heirlooms. A Winchester 92 in .38-40; A Winchester 94 in 25-35; A Remington Model 8 in .35Rem; A Savage 99E in .250-3000;.....Nothing really exotic. Just family deer rifles that have been putting meat on the table for 100 years. [:)][:)]

Only allowed to use shotguns handguns or muzzleloaders in Ohio. If I ever go to PA or KY or wherever, I'd take something odd just for kicks- 8X60R Kropatschek, 10.4X38R CF Swiss Vetterli, 6.5X53.5R Dutch, etc.
I SHOOT a lot of old calibers, esp. military, but am not allowed to hunt with them in other words.0 -

I routinely use a .50 caliber flintlock rifle, circa 1820's. I also step up to the more modern 1860's percussion rifle every once in a while.
As for smokeless, I am in the process of procuring a 6.5X55 and have my eye on a 30-40 Krag.0
