When carrying my full size I am about 50/50 on a spare mag. I have 16 in the gun and then 15 in the spare mag. I carry on my strong side and the spare mag is on my weak side. I carry my full size when it it cool enough to wear a light jacket.
When I carry my compact I 99% of the time carry a spare mag. My Colt Mustang only holds 7 rds so I keep a spare handy. The spare carries 6 rds and it is very small so not a big deal to carry it. I usually only carry this when it is not cool enough for my jacket. I usually carry in my front pocket.
Here is what I carry my CCW mags in http://www.safariland.com/product.aspx?pid=CD-Auto . They are very small, very light, very cheep, work very well. I have been using these for almost 10 years now and have not found anything better for CCW.
While 0 rounds will be enough for most people 1-3 rounds will be enough most people that will ever have to use their guns. With all that said I still feel better with at least 10-15 rds.0 -

If I have an auto, I carry at least one spare mag, sometimes two, depending on what I am wearing.
If I have one of my revolvers, I carry at least one, but usually two speed strips, again, depending on what I am wearing.
I carry this EVERY time, no exceptions.
As to your last question, it is more what I am wearing, than where I am, or what gun I have, which dictates the number of reloads I have on my person.
Better to have it and not need it, than not have it and need it. Basic preparedness.0 -

My PD policy requires that I have a minimum of 10 rounds available off duty. So, if I carry my SIG P229, I have 13 rounds, and that should be enough. Lord, I should hope that I don't get into anything that 13 rounds won't get me out of. If I carry my Colt Pony, I take an extra magazine with me. And, if I carry my Smith Bodyguard, I take an extra speedloader. 0 -

I always carry extra ammo when doing what I refer to as general carry. I wear a fanny pack with my glock 22 loaded that being 15 plus one in the pipe. Then contained in two seperate pouches within the pack I have a total of 7 extra magazines. I live in the Pacific Northwest where weather is inclimate most of the year so such a large package is not noticed. During warmer months or in situations where I may be doing something to entertain my wife (such as the theater) I carry a Taurus 85 loaded with 5 rounds and have no extra rounds to spare. Within the toolbox of my vehicle I also keep spare ammunition for both firearms should the situation arise in which I needed to fall back to that point. 0 -

I'm not a cop or a soldier, I don't anticipate getting into a gunfight.
Consequently, if my problem isn't "solved" after expending five rounds, five or ten more probably aren't going to change anything.
If I am going into a place that I think is REALLY dangerous, I can carry a 9mm with 16 rounds. Again, that's enough for just about any realistic scenario.0 -

Not that there is anything wrong with this, but out of curiosity, what possible defensive scenario do you envision where you might actually need to discharge 120 rounds of ammunition?
(I assume you are not in law enforcement).
Personally, instead of being saddled with the weight of 7 extra double-stack magazines, I'd rather carry a second (or third) gun.
Not incidentally, I remember reading that statistically over 90%+ of civilian shooting incidents are resolved with one or fewer rounds expended by the civilian. (Much of the time ZERO shots are expended, just having a gun deters the would-be assailant).
The reality is that criminals or not, unarmed sober people don't stand around doing nothing while someone is shooting at them.
Presumeably your gun is concealed and you have the element of suprise on your side. If your assailant has a gun drawn on you already, you aren't going to be foolish enough to draw on them, right?
If they don't, your first shot or two will probably either hit them, and/or cause them to start running away in fear of their lives.
Either way, by the time you've fired five or six shots, its almost a certainty that your assailants are either hit or fleeing, eliminating the need for further defensive shots. If you can't connect with your first four or five shots, why is more ammo going to help? At that point you probably need more practice (not more ammo).0 -
