new pet

This guy was lonely and so he decided life
would be more fun if he had a pet.
So he went to the pet store and told
the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet
After some discussion, he finally bought a
centipede (100-legged bug), which came in a
little white box to use for his house.

He took the box back home, found a good location
for the box, and decided he would start off by
taking his new pet to the bar to have a drink.
So he asked the centipede in the box, "Would you
like to go to Frank's with me and have a beer?"
But there was no answer from his new pet.

This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few
minutes and then asked him again, "How about
going to the bar and having a drink with me?"
But again, there was no answer from his new friend
and pet.

So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the
situation. He decided to ask him one more time; this
time putting his face up against the centipede's
house and shouting, "Hey, in there! Would you like
to go to Frank's place and have a drink with me?

A little voice came out of the box:

"I heard you the first time! I'm putting on my shoes."

    Oops.. sorry about that Dennis.. didn't mean to be a thread killer. I guess its the Mom in me that kind of snuck out there for a second :)

    TY for all of the very interesting info here... and I mean that seriously. I'm an animal lover so I find this very interesting.

    Karen is correct, that any reptile can carry salmonella. They do not necessarily have it but can. It is more common among turtles fed chicken offal (duh!) and herbivorous reptiles, but can also be seen in any others. 1. It is not pathological in the reptiles, it is part of their normal intestinal flora. 2. tests for its presence are inconclusive because they do not shed the bacteria all of the time. 3. It cannot be removed from the turtles, treatments are largely ineffective. Most anti-bacterial handsoaps (triclosan) are not very effective in killing bacteria. The alcohol based waterless hand sanitizers like purell do work as advertised, but be sure the one you use is alcohol based. A good handwashing is nearly as good, but good means in excess of 30 seconds of scrubbing.

    There is a health risk with any interaction with other animals. There is also a health risk with eating lettuce. There are anti animal groups very much like Brady et al. They also manipulate people by scare tactics. What "Assualt Weapons" manipulation is to gun owners the salmonella disease scare is manipulation to pet owners. While there is a chance you could get salmonella by handling a turtle it would probably be much much less of a chance of catching a disease than Hillery has with contact with Bill Clinton.

    I own a Cherry Head Red Foot Tortoise. A tortoise requires a high standard of care. They are cool, but doubtful it will reach 100 years.

    Look at this link and do your research and setup BEFORE you bring the tortoise home.

    Explain that to people who have died from it. It is not a major risk, but it is a very real risk, and the serotypes of salmonella carried by reptiles tend to be pretty hot, and people do in fact die. We know of one institution who has cultured viable salmonella from contaminated surfaces at least 90 days post contamination, so the stuff is tough as well. Good sanitation IS required when working with these beasties. Panic and alram are certainly not required.

    Hershel truly is an unusual pet for sure. I think I'll stick to my Rottie with the big teeth :)
