new pet

This guy was lonely and so he decided life
would be more fun if he had a pet.
So he went to the pet store and told
the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet
After some discussion, he finally bought a
centipede (100-legged bug), which came in a
little white box to use for his house.

He took the box back home, found a good location
for the box, and decided he would start off by
taking his new pet to the bar to have a drink.
So he asked the centipede in the box, "Would you
like to go to Frank's with me and have a beer?"
But there was no answer from his new pet.

This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few
minutes and then asked him again, "How about
going to the bar and having a drink with me?"
But again, there was no answer from his new friend
and pet.

So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the
situation. He decided to ask him one more time; this
time putting his face up against the centipede's
house and shouting, "Hey, in there! Would you like
to go to Frank's place and have a drink with me?

A little voice came out of the box:

"I heard you the first time! I'm putting on my shoes."

    thinking about getting a new pet. it is a sulcata tortoise. it is a few months old right now. this would be a pet that would out live me and probally my kids. they say they live to be over a 100 years. they get to be about 30 inches. here is a picture of a sulcata tortoise

    I read where they eat grass and weeds. I wonder if I got some of them if they would mow my yard?[:)]

    there is a pet store here in Omaha Nebraska can't remember the name right now, but they were $129.00 for the 2 month old tortoises.

    Have you considered how much a 30 inch tortoise weighs?

    My sister had one, a big female, but she had to get rid of it. Gave it to some educational facility. Its shell was under 2 feet, but it was still hard for her to move if she needed to move it. And being a tropical species, it wasn't programmed to hibernate, so the darn thing wandered about the house all year. Her other tortoise, a North American species, turned into a doorstop when the days started getting short.

    The other problem she had was that the Sulcata was female, and her native was a male, and he was some kind of in love with the big ol' gal. He wore himself out chasing her around, and she wasn't interested in him at all.

    I'm thinking that one across the street from where K-Mart used to be on 72nd and Ames, they got a bunch of exotic pets there. on the west side of 72nd street. I think it was Hidden Valley, or Valley Ridge, ...

    If I remember correctly this is one of the species that can have a huge number of offspring per year. The first successful breeders made a small fortune. What some consider a threatened species is starting to become as common as parakeets in the pet trade.

    I only have my five so if the food supply gets cut I will have meat for a while[:)]

    i remember that one, but can't remember the name. this one is on 63rd and maple in benson. it is called lizard king reptiles

    About a year and a half ago I welded a pen that was 70'x 35' for two Galapagos tortoise that were owned by a professor at Stanford university. They were huge! If I recall they were born around 1950 and these guys were at least 300-400 lbs +.

    I've always heard that a lot of turtles have salmonella. Is it the same for this breed?

    I feel like I'm poking into a guy conversation here but I think I can answer the salmonella question :)

    Actually, all reptiles can carry salmonella. That's why when the Ninja Turtles were popular with kids, there were so many outbreaks. You have to watch your hands with antibacterial soap after handling any pet in the reptile family.

    I am offered about one a week, so I can testify they do not remain treasured pets for a lot of folks that think they are cute when small. This is the largest mainland tortoise in the world and males can reach 30" in carapace (upper shell) length and well over 100 pounds in weight. They can walk through 1/2 inch plywood, so you will have to build suitably strong housing. They are African, from the southern perimeter of the Sahara desert and do not survive winters in Most of the US. South Florida and extreme South Texas, maybe SoCal. They are aggressive with one another, and often even males and females are not compatable. They do learn to recognize humans as a source of food and some training is possible if the tortoise is interested in what you have. They esitivate in the wild sitting out the hottest and dryest part of the year in burrows, which can be long. They tend to graze grass down to bare dirt, and a medium sized adult can turn 1000 square feet of lawn into a mud wrestling venue, just add water. I can only say there are none in my back yard.
