A man accused of shooting and paralyzing his daughter's boyfriend has been charged with first-degree battery and a terroristic act.
George David Reed, 48, of Highfill was arrested July 31 in the shooting of Michael Austin Guzman, 19.
Reed was charged Friday in Benton County Circuit Court and is free on a $150,000 bond. His arraignment is set for Sept. 10.
Authorities say Reed came home and found Guzman hiding in the closet of his 17-year-old daughter's bedroom. Police said Reed beat Guzman with a pool stick, then left the room to retrieve a gun. Guzman and his girlfriend blocked the bedroom door with a dresser, and Reed began shooting through the door, police said.
A bullet struck Guzman in the back and lodged in his spinal cord, fracturing three vertebrae. Doctors don't expect Guzman to regain any feeling or mobility below his waist, authorities said.
If convicted, Reed faces up to life in prison.

I don't think much will come of this. Any canny lawyer will be able to spin this. "Guzman was a predator, a stalker, who has been engaging in statutory rape for years and finally, my client, this noble father, had had enough."

You cant shoot someone because you are angry with them. You cant shoot blindly into a room where the person is hiding. You cant shoot into a room where your daughter is.
This is typical of a person who says he loves his daughter but now wont see her for the rest of his life. He paraylized a law abiding person for life.
The shooter should get life in jail for his heinous crime.

i raised a girl and agree that everything i did as a younger man comes around, but was never nuts enough to shoot my daughters boyfriend ,this guy sounds completely controling and obssessive no wonder she was rebelling .if a nut shot my son in that same situation well good thing he,s in custody, cuz i,d be freak,n ! he,s got some kind of judgement comeing. i pray to god to help me keep a level head everyday and treat others as i want to be treated sometimes though violence is all thats understood! what kind of background doe,s this nut have anyway? 0 -
If the boy was 17 wouldn't the girl be charged with rape as well? I hope that young man enjoyed his short sex life since he won't be feeling anything below the waist ever again. As for the father shooting the kid, that was just plain stupid. There are so many ways to get a message across to hormonal young men and women without getting yourself arrested. The time comes when you find guys in your daughter's closet you have probably missed your opportunity to have "that talk" with her. 0 -

It happens with kids,...I did it, and I am not NAIVE enough to beleive my daughter won't have the same feelings when that age as I did. I can only hope to make her smart enough to protect herself.

BENTONVILLE - A 19-year-old Bella Vista man has been admitted to a Joplin, Mo., hospital and may be paralyzed from his waist down after being shot by his girlfriend's father, according to court documents.
A specialist was scheduled to operate on Michael Austin Guzman's back in an effort to retrieve the bullet that is lodged in his spinal cord. According to an affidavit of probable cause in the case, three of Guzman's vertebrae were fractured, and doctors do not expect him to regain any feeling or mobility from his waist down. His condition was not known at press time.
Guzman was taken to Freeman Health after being shot at his girlfriend's home at 13569 Vaughn Road in Highfill.
Deputies were called at 11: 10 a. m. to 13569 Vaughn Road in Highfill after a caller reported someone at the address had been shot, according to Doug Gay, public information deputy for the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
A wounded Guzman was found in a rear bedroom of the residence.
George David Reed, 48, was arrested on charges of battery in the first degree, a class B felony, and a terroristic act, a class Y felony.
Circuit Judge Xollie Duncan found that probable cause existed for Reed to be held on the charges.

Taylor represents Reed.
Duncan set bond for Reed at $ 50, 000 cash or corporate surety and a $ 100, 000 signature bond. Reed was released from jail on bond Wednesday.
Reed's 17-year-old daughter called Benton County Central Communications to report that her father had shot her boyfriend.
According to court documents, Guzman and the girl had been dating for the past four months, and she recently told her mother that Guzman had been sneaking into the house at night. The two were allowed to continue dating, but Guzman was told he was not to come to the residence without being chaperoned, according to the affidavit.
Guzman and the girl agreed for him to come to the home Tuesday morning while his girlfriend's parents were away. He parked his car on a dirt road about a quarter of mile from the home, and his girlfriend picked him up and they went back to her home, court documents state.
Reed told BCSO investigator Jeremy Felton that a friend called and told him Guzman might be at Reed's residence because the friend saw Guzman's car parked down the road from Reed's home, according to court documents.
Reed went to his home and got a pool stick from his garage before entering the house, then went to his daughter's room, where he found Guzman hiding in the closet, the affidavit states. Reed claims he yelled at Guzman to get out of his house, and Guzman began kicking him in the legs, so Reed began hitting Guzman with the pool stick, according to court documents. Reed claims he left the room and retrieved a loaded gun from his bedroom and came back toward the room and yelled for Guzman to get out, and Reed could not get the bedroom door to open, court documents state.
Reed claims he fired warning shots high up and also fired shots toward the bottom of the door, according to the affidavit. Reed backed away from the door after hearing Guzman yell out about being shot, the affidavit states.
Reed put the gun back into the nightstand drawer, then waited on the porch for deputies to arrive, court documents state.
His daughter told the investigator that her father found her boyfriend in the closet and began hitting Guzman in the face with the pool stick, the affidavit states. The affidavit claims that while being hit, Guzman kept saying " Stop, I'll leave, " and her father kept hitting him.
Reed left the room, and the girl claims Guzman was sitting on the floor and leaning against the door while trying to pull a dresser in front of the door to prevent Reed from getting back into the room, according to court documents. The girl said she was on the other side of the dresser trying to help Guzman put it in front of the door, the affidavit states.
The girl said four shots were fired through the door, and one of the later shots struck Guzman in the back, according to court documents.
After being shot, Guzman told his girlfriend that he could not feel or move his legs, court documents state.
When the girl called 911, a dispatcher told her to find something to use to apply pressure to Guzman's wound. The girl used her bed sheet, according to court documents.
Reed is scheduled to appear at 8: 30 a. m. Sept. 10 for his arraignment before Circuit Judge David Clinger.
Formal charges have not been filed in the case.
