whats the best thing you have done?
i have been getting the urge lately, to do something with my life that is really "good" i'm thinking some kind of volunteer work, some kind of venture where i can make an impact on other peoples lives, and in a positive way...
what are some things you guys have done that have given you the sense that you were doing some good?
i mean, we can get pretty caught up in the day to day of our lives, work, school, guns, etc... sometimes i feel like my life doesn't really have a purpose...

what are some things you guys have done that have given you the sense that you were doing some good?

Working 6-7 days a week doesn't allow too much time for volunteer work.
Tori(the Wife) is a Paraprofessional. She works with Special Needs kids at the Elementary school. She is assigned one child for personal assistance in a classroom of them. The last 4 years she's been working with a boy named Steven. The most adorable, humble, polite, little boy you've ever met. You could give him a stick of gum and he'd love you forever for it.
His whole family (4 boys, one girl) has some sort of Mental Defect. His mother is probably on a 6 or 7th grade level. Mom works hard to give the kids what they need and deserve. Warm meals, clean clothes (they may be used, but they are clean), but has no extra money for gifts.
We have always picked up a couple things and a cake for the kids' birthdays, but this year we decided to help with Christmas too.
Each child got 6 gifts. Mom and Dad got new wardrobes. Ok, most of it was stuff that doesn't fit us anymore that would fit them. Express sweaters, Tommy jeans, Abercrombie, American Eagle, all the good stuff.
I didn't get the opportunity to be there when Tori gave them all the presents, but I know they all were absolutely grateful for everything.
Not much, but it makes me feel warm inside. You just have to know this family.0 -

Seriously, if you have thoughts of inadequency as a human being, watch George Baily in "It's a Wonderful Life". The fact that you have doubts says you do plenty.0 -
Well I bought a load of groceries for some firefighters. As my reward for mentioning it here in the forum I got a nasty reply from a fellow who'd been a member here for five years and had a total of 25 posts...Two of which he dedicated to being critical of me for even talking about it. I'll be interested if he pops up on this thread. 0 -

As to what I did to earn it, I was a Cub Scout leader for years and then volunteered in other things. Cub Scouts was the best. [:D]0 -
My ex FIL, who was blessed beyond measure with good health, spent
some time each week visiting with those in nursing homes, making
their days some brighter.0 -
For me it was when I first came back from the gulf and had the oprotuneity to go and talk with school kids.
The classes (I think it was 5 classes) I visited were those from my hometown who had written me and sent me cards while I was there.
I showed up in my desert cammo uniform and talked with them and answered questions (many questions I had to kind of beat around the bush and not answer due to the nature of them) and even took MRE's for them to sample.
Alot of the reason I did this was learned from my grandfather who was a WWII and Korea Vet and a Peral Harbor survivor and he often went to schools to talk with the kids about that period of time.0 -

I certainly commend your thinking...... looking to do something good never hurt any of us. I would say WHAT you do doesn't matter nearly as much as doing SOMETHING. When you do something for someone else, it reminds you that you have value, ability, gifts, generosity and most of all love for your fellow man. Just look around a little and I promise you will find someone who needs something from you. It could be just a warm smile, a kind word, a handicapped person who has a car they can't wash, a elderly person who can't rake their leaves, a child who doesn't have a father or buddy to go fishing with, a shut-in who just needs a warm body to listen to for a few minutes. You don't have to spend any money and you don't have to give a LOT OF TIME, just something done with a warm heart will do you more good than the recipient every time.0 -
The best thing I've done and will continue to do is be honest through out life. Yes that includes humbling yourself when wrong.
Also to give without expecting something in return, to accept others how they are.
It's not easy in todays world of selfish inconsiderated people, but it can be done.[;)]0 -

I do several little bitty things throughout the year to help people in need.
Kind of a family tradition.

1. Go volunteer at the VA hospital
2. Take a kid fishing or shooting. Borrow one if you have a shortage.
3. Find a solitary senior citizen that needs sidewalk shoveled, grass cut, etc.
4. Help out with a scout troop
5. Sign up to donate blood
6. See if local foodbank needs a volunteer driver
7. Send the local volunteer fire dept or rescue squad a check for $100, with a note that says "Thanks".
There are reasons that many of us cannot do ALL of the above, but it is a start. Or find something you want to do- and do it. Then shut up about it. Virtue is it's own reward.0 -
Evangelism is by far the best thing that I've ever done. In fact it stands alone in order of importance. How many so far, I don't know for sure. Maybe 30-50. I'll be done on the day I finally go home. 0 -
I give to the childrens christan fund, support 2 kids overseas.
I stop everytime I am able to assist a motorist that has broken down.
most people will say thats nothing, but when you take in to account I am disabled. It sure means alot to those Ive helped.0 -
You are right on the money! Volunteering is the best way to help others and help you forget your "self". Cheap advice: don't over do it or you'll burn out. Once/twice a month seems to be my limit. [^] 0 -
Only you can decide what it is you want to do. You have to choose an activity that is both pleasurable (as in fun, yet challenging without becoming too burdensome. Nothing worse than a gripey volunteer) and meaningful to you, and no one but you can decide what that is. 0 -

I agree with Mr. Nunn about keeping your good deeds to yourself. In fact, Jesus talks about that very subject in the book of Matthew.
However, since none of you folks know me:
I have been taking a Veteran friend of mine to some of his chemo treatments. It gives his wife a break (they take all day and dr. won't give him an end date.) What he has done for veterans an others in this community could fill volumes, so what I do with him is pretty insignifigant.0 -

During my divorce in 2000, I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. I worked with a fellow that belonged to a masonic lodge nearby. I had seen the Shriners do a lot of good for sick kids and decided to look into the organization. I have never regretted it one bit. It is not for everyone, but it fits me well. Our local lodge host Christmas dinner for elderly in our community, we hold fundraisers for Children's Miracle Network, and we are about to hold our first child ID program in our community. It has been a great time. I did go ahead and join the Shriners and have sponsored two kids to the hospital with great results for both.
There are several good organizations that would love to have your help. Being a part of one, you are able to accomplish so much more than any one person can do on their own.

Too bad good deeds go unpublished while religion is broadcasted. Maybe both should be kept to oneself.0 -
Check out your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. That's a great way to learn construction skills (or shaprpen those you may already have) and help a needy family with a decent place to live. 0 -
Sandy and I spent the last 29 years as foster parents. That has given us a great deal of joy, even when it was hard. I'm glad we did it. 0
