Had to almost shoot today
I was just getting ready to go to church today and our neihbors who are drunks were still all boozed up from the night before...he came running up to our front door and started pounding on it saying that we stole something from him and broke the glass on the door. I ran to my room and grabbed my 870 and ran out to the front door and said I would shoot if he didnt leave, at first he didnt belive me but then he saw the gun and took off towards his house tripping on the way back.
I'm still kinda in shock and the police are on there way...I never thought it would be this tramatic...this guy by no accounts is a small guy either (like 6'2" and 220 LBS)...I was that close to shooting someone...i had the gun aimed and saftey off...ok ill get back to you guys later

IN MY OPINION.Im not sure if drawing down on a man with a ready to go shotgun was called for in that situation.I mean if you were in your home,he was not, there was distance between you and you had already told him to leave that seems abit extreme to me.Have the shotgun handy sure but dont shoulder it and be ready to fire until it has escalated to more than a verbal altercation. Now like someone else pointed out here it was YOU in that situation and you did what you felt was right but I think you should have just reported him damaging your property and kept a close eye on him till the police arrived.Even though he was in your yard, broke some of your property and didnt want to leave if you had fired that shotgun and killed an unarmed man I think you would have had quite a legal headache on your hands. If you did what you think was right then hats off to you for protecting your family but like I said at the beginning of my thats just MY OPINION. 0 -

Late nights, I answer the door naked too.0 -

Well that's usually enough. Don0 -
IN MY OPINION you did fine. The only thing I might of done different is not aim it at him just let him see it and let it be known his bad tempered morning would become eternally peaceful if he barged through that door. But our friend did prove that a gun can go a long way toward averting violence and is a defensive and deterring tool.
I wonder about some of the civilized and laid back attitudes expressed here. I find them some what admirable but this man was not dealing with gentleman dueling here. I always thought that down south the famous courtesy and politeness is the side effect of men who KNOW how honor bound and thin skinned we all are. None of that northeast bickering back and forth smack talk like you see in mafia movies. It only goes so far before preferrably fist first start flying.0 -
The moment he broke the glass, all bets are off. I think the response was appropriate. 0 -
Over 6 hours since his post!
Maybe he got hauled to the pokey!0 -

I agree 100%!
If I had a similar situation, I certainly would not be posting, while I waited for the police to arrive.0 -

Eh. The police could take HOURS to get there. Hell, you're lucky if they even show up. Denver PD would probably have you come in an fill out a counter report.0 -
Flying Clay Disk thats what I was meaning.Crimes committed sure but deadly force NO.Unless it escallated rom simple property damage and a verbal altercation that shotgun should not have been drawn down on someone. That was my opinion of it.Have the gun ready in case but use it wisely. 0 -

And while he's waiting for "more than a verbal altercation," maybe he could just wait for the guy to beat the crap out of him, then see if he can still crawl to the shotgun?0 -
IN TEXAS YOU COULD HAVE RUINED HIS BUZZ 0 -
Rythm Guy if there was space between him and the guy he was having problems with than thats the point exactly he should have waited before shouldering that shotgun.Just because a man is drunk and breaks a piece of glass does not give any civilian the right to draw down on him with a shotgun. If the man had to much to drink and broke a piece of glass ok but he doesnt deserve to be shot for it is the point.Im not saying lay down and take it Im saying dont go shoot an unarmed man over him pissing you off and breaking a piece of glass and let anger get the better of you.If he had the gun out fine,if he had it in hand fine but as long as it was verbal, there was distance between them and its a broken piece of glass then no I dont feel he should have shouldered his weapon.Had it at the ready sure.Im surprised at the fact that this is a board of legal law abiding responsible gun owners and some of you think the man should have been shot down over a broken piece of glass.
If you dont see my point than Im sorry for you but being ready and overreacting are 2 totally different animals. If the man had no weapons, all he was was drunk, there was distance, police had been called than it didnt require the threat of deadly force is what Im saying its things like this that end up making gun owners look bad when they shoot an unarmed man after an argument and a broken piece of glass.Im not saying he shouldnt have been at the ready,Im not saying he shouldnt have had a gun,Im not saying get close enough for the guy to kick your azz and take your gun.All Im saying is the situation from what I read didnt warrantg that strong of a reaction. That is my opinion on it.Would I take that situation lightly if I was in it absoulutely not but I would be more reserved with my threats of deadly force until I had to present that threat. If he had shot the man and killed him regardless of the man being on his property and braking the glass and refusing to leave he would have found himself in trouble with the Police I am pretty sure.Restraint is very important to a gun owner especially when the other part is not armed and depending on which part of the country you are in you could be facing a murder charge over something like this.Thats like saying if the man had punched him he could have shot him which is just not true and thats even more of an up close and personal threat than arguing and brakeing glass.Force on Force/Use of Equal Force kind of thing if you feel that somebody shoot be shot over breaking glass, punching you or verbally arguing with you than you might need to rethink some things.0
