Had to almost shoot today
I was just getting ready to go to church today and our neihbors who are drunks were still all boozed up from the night before...he came running up to our front door and started pounding on it saying that we stole something from him and broke the glass on the door. I ran to my room and grabbed my 870 and ran out to the front door and said I would shoot if he didnt leave, at first he didnt belive me but then he saw the gun and took off towards his house tripping on the way back.
I'm still kinda in shock and the police are on there way...I never thought it would be this tramatic...this guy by no accounts is a small guy either (like 6'2" and 220 LBS)...I was that close to shooting someone...i had the gun aimed and saftey off...ok ill get back to you guys later

Hope you don't live in California.......[xx(][xx(] He will say that he was just going to invite you to the party and you pulled a shotgun on him. They will believe him because you are a gun owner and, therefore, a potential terrorist.....[:(][:(]

Dont get the gun until hes in your house threatening you. If you didnt steal, theres no need, as wont be any proof.
Also, didnt your friend johnny say he was like 6' 2" 220 lbs
Hey, Gunz, how old are you?0 -

Was your life, or a family member's life, under immenent threat of grave bodily harm, or death? Was he armed?
By goin' for the guns you may have actually escalated the situaion. Wait till the next time these people get drunk.
Just stickin' my nose in.
edit: I probably would have called 911 and not confronted the guy until he actually entered my house.
edit II: Although, a strikingly similar case was upheld here in Colorado a couple years ago.
FCD,
The guy was knocking on the door and being a jerk. No big deal.
The guy was obviously drunk and broke a window. He was accusing him of a crime in his rage. Big deal.
I'm not what I would consider to be a "big" guy I suppose -- I'm 6'0 and 190#. I would take a guess that I'm of "average" build.
He didn't pull the trigger. He did, however, provide ample warning to the guy that he was willing to do so. This diffused the situation and sent the guy running. He also called the cops and informed them of the situation.
I don't see a problem here. I think he acted with proper restraint and took prudent measures to diffuse the situation.
I probably would have done the exact same thing, except I'd've grabbed a 45 instead of a 12-gauge.0 -

He was being threatened. The guy broke a window and was accusing him of a crime.
Why would you wait until the guy was in your house before getting the gun? You don't FIRE the gun until the guy is in your house, but there's no reason to not get the gun and be prepared.
If I understand Gunz correctly, he didn't leave the house. He merely stood at the front door.
I see nothing wrong here.0 -

Possibly because there wasnt a need. If he comes into your house, go for it, gun it up, 'till then, wait.
Police around here say your not allowed to shoot anyone unless they threaten you, then a month or 2 ago, its now anyone on your property thats not supposed to be there, fair game.
Depends where he is0 -

If you wait until he is inside your house, sometimes that is too late, Jacob. Unless you have a gun within easy reach of every room in your house, it is too easy to be overcome and wind up being another crime statistic.
As I've read it, the guy was drunk and he was damaging Mr.Gunz's home. He was at least being verbally abusive if not threatening. This is the signal that things might get out of control and that arming yourself would be a prudent move.
I'd not do anything but brandish the weapon so long as I'm at the threshold of my door. But, cross the threshold, or go through the window, that he just broke, and, well, let's just say that the coroner is going to need a mop and a squeegee to pick up the remains of the bad guy.0 -
i don't care if he is 4'11" 110 pounds come do that at my house you'll get a similar response, he didn't ask for the trouble so he doesn't have to fight fair never know what the guy has behind his back 0 -
I arm myself whenever there is a unexpected visitor at a odd hour, I would have had a pistol in hand at the first knock.[:0]

Better yet pull a johnny dangerously and pistol whip the SOB. You know; like a knife strike with the barrel or something like that. 0 -

That'll look good in court.0 -
neighbor beating on the door,,,no big deal,,,BUT as soon as he broke the glass he would have met my 870 also,,with the glass broke he could reach in and unlock/open the door,,he could fire "if armed " through the opening,he could also see through the broken window and know if he came through that door they would carry his dead ass back out of it,,,once he broke the glass he is the one who went too far and created a threat to my family and myself 0 -
[8D]--I'm a big softhearted teddybear--
--I have ADEQUET loaded firearms in my residence and I have "see thru" security doors front and back--
--I've had "odd time" notice and I just cary my cell phone along with my ?????,gone to the door and "observed" the VISITOR--
--It's happened twice in 5 yr's, each time "ADIOS" no problem--
--Oh and Mr. Gunz "ran out the front door" with a LOADED "ready" 12ga--that was WRONG !!!

He said he ran OUT TO the front door. So, if he did indeed stay inside his house he is fine I would say. Just thought we needed to keep the words he used right before we judge him wrongly.[:D]0 -
lemme know when the gun goes off. til then, I've got some cartoons to watch. 0 -

I see a few people in here need to learn how to read,,he said he ran
quote:out to the front door ,,,he never said he went out into the yard,,when the guy broke the glass in the door,,I bet you would go to that door also,,he now has access into the house,,just reach in and unlock the door ,,and as far as having a LOADED GUN,,,WHAT THE HELL GOOD IS AN UNLOADED ONE,,all these people in here talk about carry if needed,,now you want to trashmouth someone who was defending his own home,,,you may let someone knock the glass out of your door and come on in,,but I can tell you I would have done the exact same thing and if the man would have came on in,,they could have carried his dead ass back out0 -
Bunch of arm chair quarterbacks - He did what He felt was right, as He was in the situation. Myself - Mrs.Blue would have had the 870 backing me up with a pistol!!! 0 -
I wonder if his brother will report here, that he has been shot through the kitchen window? 0 -
glad your ok and no mess to clean up 0 -
I always answer my door late at night with a pistol in hand. I see no problem with what he said he did. Far too many home invasions to be real cordial when answering the door late at night. Don 0 -
Protecting one's life and property... Once the guy broke the window he committed an attempted B&E. Most places have laws against communicating threats, so that makes two crimes the guy was committing In most reasonable States you could blast him through the door and be totally justified given his threatening demeanor and intoxication level. 0 -

[8D]--I apologize, I had thought that the guy had broke his OWN window (glass)--
--You're right, now after re-reading, what he did was RIGHT even here in California--
--Forgive me for my sleepy eyes-
--My apology Mr. Gunz, I just got back from Altitude and I had 4WD LAG--

A few years ago, my nearest neighbors (?mi. away), were in a scuffle. He'd taken off in a drunken fit, so his wife and their children show up here for refuge. She said "he'll be back..he always comes back". Sure enough a couple hours later he shows up at the front door looking for them (they hid in the bedroom).
My front door is one of those all glass storm doors, and I was sitting at my desk in plain view. I answered the front door and told him "yes, they are here...no, she don't want to speak with you".
Well, she's already called her family from here, and they showed up about the same time. I figured then I'd come back to my desk and let her family (which was a rather stout mother, and two VERY stout brothers) handle the situation on the front porch.
The front porch was well lit, will everyone in plain view, I and them.
I'm sitting at my desk, which has a fine selection of guns in plain view all around it. Even if they'd have been hidden, you can bet your arse...if he got ignorant and broke the window - it would've been his last foolish move.
I think letting this guy know he was armed, to diffuse the situation quickly - was a good move.0 -
WOW! Hit by shrapnel yesterday and now this.
I'm thinkin' movie deal here. Seven figures. Cover of People. Leno. Chicks.0 -
Dude, I would call the cops and report that behavior in case he gives you grief in the future. 0 -

Hah, late again pretty boy! Already sent the Lear Jet with two hookers, a contract and a life size cut out of me with my arm around a headless body so he can stand behind it and have his picture taken and it will appear as if we had actually met. I'd say it's a done deal.0
