I am just curious..How much community service do

YOU DO ? Since this forum likes to bash the Red Cross, I am curious how many on here actually give their free time to help anyone in need. Come on big boys spit it out.. lets see how many REAL men there are? Step up to the plate and tell me what you do for mankind , your community.. or are you just a person to Bitch about those who receive help when they need it?

    I'd love to but I have attracted the attention of an unsavory GB charactor who enjoys being critical of my mentioning any acts of charity. Only here on GB can someone get bent out of shape when you buy a load of groceries for a firehouse!

    I give to the Salvation, the local food pantry, and the collection jars at local businesses for LOCAL people in need. The food pantry people are volunteers. I prefer not to pay people's large salaries when giving to charity.

    During the '98 Ice Storm there was not much help from the Red Cross. It was local people taking care of each other (mostly).

    Charity begins at home.

    I donate my time to nobody except my family. I am one to bitch about those who recieve my money agianst my will when they need help.

    If I wasn't forced I'd give and help more then likely. I feel like I'm getting robbed currently though. When tropical storm Allison came to town for a visit I barely slept for a week and was helping my neighbors push thier cars up out of the water and looking after a few elderly folks that lived close to me. Houston was literally underwater for the most part. Stuff like that sure I'll do my best to help folks, but giving cash heck no they can earn their own like I did. After all this is the land of opportunity.

    I donate every year to the "Shop with a Cop" program our local law enforcement puts on every year at Christmas. It helps poor kids have something for christmas. I blame the parents for being lazy but it's not the kids fault.
    While in college, I served on a vol. fire/rescue squad for 5 years. Went to 400+ fires and about the same number of car crashes.

    I spend around 40 hours per month volunteering at the Spruce Goose Museum, another 20 helping at the Senior Center, and some more hours per month doing generally good works around the community. I also drive folks that are unable to get to the polls by themselves, with rides on voting day.

    I feel that we have an obligation to our country to do this, and have done community service of some kind since I was a Cub Scout.

    How about you, my friend ??

    Oh, and by the way, the red cross sucks.

    I don't bash the Red Cross. One of the more significant actions my Masonic Lodge took, the year I was Master, was to donate a good-sized chunk of change to the RC. I took that office in January of 2002, when our nation was still shocked and hurting from 9-11, and it seemed to me and those who voted in agreement with me that such a donation would be a proper gesture from the members of a fraternity devoted in large part to charity.

    But, as to your exact question -- my "community service" consists of doing small things in my actual community. The guys who quietly go shovel the walks for their elderly next-door or down-the-street neighbors? I'm one of those. I keep up the yards on unoccupied pieces of property near my home. I'm the borderline crazy guy with the dogs who fixes toys and bikes and such for neighborhood kids. I don't do much, I suppose, in comparison to some, but I have little time and less money for doing more, once I've taken care of my own basic needs. I'm also uncomfortable dealing directly with people in general, so face-to-face service doesn't fit me well. I still at least try to leave the world a slightly better place than it was when I got here.

    The Church across the street from me PAYS NOTHING for irrigation system repair or maintainence,NOT EVEN PARTS!! WHY/ HOW you ask... BECAUSE I TAKE CARE OF IT FOR THEM. Them that PAY NOOOOO TAXES EITHER.. WHY i have no idea. And i don't even belong to their "FLOCK"... I also maintain the irrigation system for a "group home" that an old friend of mine runs, in "DOWN-TOWN-BROWN-TOWN"... WHY you ask? Because the guy is my friend,and the org. would otherwise have NO Irrig. sys...
    I know you aren't pickin on me exclucively, but it pisses me over, when ANYONE questions somone elses FREEDOM OF CHOICE!!

    Doug I ask nobody to love me. My wife kids chooses to. I guess I'm just jaded. If you knew more about my history it might make more sense. I've learned many lessons about those that "need" help. The only bad part is the kids that don't deserve their parents and end up picking up those habits sometimes.

    Not that much these days. I do most of mine through the church now, and it's maybe two, eight to ten hour days a month either working at the food pantry or the youth center.

    Since Sandy had her stroke and I'm now the cook and cleaner of the shack, I just don't have much free time.[V]

I've been out of fires and other things and the Sally anns are giving away what the have and the Reds are charging. I got my bad feeling with Red way back when I was in the service and my feeling are mine. To each their own and it's great you are helping them, but I won't. I don't give to the United Way either and that's my choice also, great for the ones that do but not me.

    I try not to slam the Red or United way because others may give and support them but and you may not like my charities but life goes on. Go to bed before you have a heart attact, Red will still be there and the world still goes on.

    I hate to say it ,, but that crap about Comm. Serv. And who does or don't do it is SORRY!![V]I don't deny none of us prob. does ENOUGH, so to speak, but damn man!!

    Work in food pantry to feed the needy, will most likely be out Thanksgiving day delivering food. I am a volunteer and certified disaster relief for the RedCross. I am the boss who will put you up a shelter, feed you, give you a cot and maybe a blanket and keep you out of the weather till the storm or disaster passes.

    Community service? Not much right now as work, family and bing a 30 something who is back in school take up most of my time. However in the past I donated platelets or white blood cells every 2 weeks, I was the Southern California Chaplain for Racers For Christ for 5 years. Plus doing what ever was needed at the church, such as community out reach, food bank, working in the nursery school, even landscaping and putting roofs on the houses of the needy. But I admit, I could do much more, I'm just selfish with my time right now.
