I am just curious..How much community service do
YOU DO ? Since this forum likes to bash the Red Cross, I am curious how many on here actually give their free time to help anyone in need. Come on big boys spit it out.. lets see how many REAL men there are? Step up to the plate and tell me what you do for mankind , your community.. or are you just a person to Bitch about those who receive help when they need it?

Doug I ask nobody to love me. My wife kids chooses to. I guess I'm just jaded. If you knew more about my history it might make more sense. I've learned many lessons about those that "need" help. The only bad part is the kids that don't deserve their parents and end up picking up those habits sometimes.

I think you should change the verbage to "Service to the Community".

For community service I play Santa Claus for various towns and communities, scouts, day cares and head start classes, and even our local nursing and rehab center. I do this for absoulutely free, to bring smiles and happiness to people in the community.
I also donate funds to different Veterans programs, and my membership in different Veteran Orgs., where we do several things a year for the communities around us.0 -

I help with a food drive for the needy and extra time in during the holidays,my wife and myself belong to a group that look after several elderly folks making sure they have food clean warm clothes and a way to the doctor when needed,I am NRA instructor and spend many weekends with the local youth shooting and yes I cover all the expenses for this unlike the RC who recieved something like 1.2 Billion in donations for programs related to 911 "LIBERTY FUND" and only gave out something in the neigborhood of 500 million to this,

1.2BILLION= 1,200 MILLION.-500 Million=7,000 Million. Where did that go?
I personaly have been through 5 Hurricanes. Not to mention 7 Tropical storms, since i have liver in WPB. Andd i have NEVER recieved so much as a SINGLE BAG OF ICE from the RC.Or a single MRE. Yet i and my wife have, in the past given, GENEROUSLY to the RC at stop-lights.Same as the VFC's in WPB.It'll never happen again, not to the RC.I cannot speak for Deb. She has her own mind, and does what she wants when it comes to charity.0 -

While I was working, the wife and I put in about 20 hours each at the local schools every week, for eight years, teaching reading programs, and math programs. I did pull-out challenge (advanced classes in Science and Math) - ended up teaching whole grade levels in the gym or outdoors twice a month, having (classroom made) hot air balloon races, science fairs at local and district level.
Wife and I also teach kite-making and have kite shows every spring at local schools, park programs, and Churches, FREE (we provide all materials).
One year, we donated a Full-Boat (Limo pick-up, Airfare, Housing, meals, Helicopter ride, Horseback ride, tours, and some spending money for a family of four) trip to Kauai from California.
Another year, I rewired all the (unsafe) heaters in a 16-unit apartment housing tract, for low cost housing - I provided all parts and labor and materials. Did this after one unit had burned down, at the beginning of winter.
During the ten years I owned a plane, (C-182)I donated over 100 hours of use to the CAP@over $100/flying hour cost, no charge.
Every year for over twenty-five years, (ended when I retired) Wife and I would spend hours out of nearly every day of our kite festival vacations, pulling hapless visitors' cars out of the beach sand (with our much maligned full-size SUV's and Pickup trucks) all up and down the coasts of Oregon and Washington, all Summer long.
Wired most houses in my neighborhood with (they provided) gen-tran switches, for safe generator use when power fails.
Every Winter here in the Glorious NorthBest, I have tow straps and chainsaws in my cars (the same hated full-size SUVs) to pull out unlucky motorists from the bushes, ravines, ditches, etc, and clear away any fallen trees from whatever road I am on, wherever I go.
I volunteer at the local GunRange as a Range Safety Officer, minimum of 12 hours a year, but more like 120 a year.
I volunteer as a Minuteman, and give the organization over $1000/year in addition to my services in training new Ham Radio Operators. I also repair their radios, and fabricate/donate antennas as needed.
I happily donate every year to the Salvation Army.
Guess that is all that I do.0 -
I bought my way out of court-ordered community service.
But show me a neighbor in need, or a troubled motorist on my route and I'm there.
In short, I don't make community service a part of my habitual life. But when I see that help is needed, I give it.0 -

That's a hell of a lot of calls. NYC has about 25,000 structure fires per year, and 220 stations. That puts your volunteer department's number of fire calls on par with one of the busiest FDs in the world. It just amazes me that a department can be that busy and not be a paid department.0 -
hmmm ok... so as for our house hold it goes like this
every Thursday David or I cook at Manna House and kiddo goes during the summer or anytime she is out of school.( she has been going since she was 5 and will be 13 soon)
We buy random meals for homeless we see.
David has "worked" without pay for the last 2.5 years 40-60 hours per week getting our FD up to par. (He will be paid effective 01/01/2008)
I usually am doing something for the Fire Dept or Police Dept at least a few hours a week.
As some here may have read we worked very hard to get all the necessary things done to lower the ISO rateing for our city which saves everyone on their insurance.0 -
I grocery shop for a number of senior shut ins that live close to me.
They have no family, and can no longer drive.
When I deliver their stuff, I spend as much time as I can talking with them, or fixing stuff around the house for them.

Kiwanis, "ACIM" (area congregations in ministry), and about $1000 a year to various community service organizations in goods only. I don't do plain old cash. I have never written off a dime of it.
