that you should stay out of bear country when a woman is having her period? ...trying to decide wether I need to rethink our hike into grizzly bear habitat this afternoon.?.?.?

I think the underlying question may be: "Do YOU want to be around a female during her period ??
I'd rather tackle the bear.

I can offer anecdotal evidence that the bears-and-periods story may be true. I had a black bear live two houses down the road from me for many years before it died. (In fact, it escaped and came to visit once and scared the hell out of my kids and drove my dogs nuts, although it was pretty harmless.) When the daughter of the owner was 15 and at "that time of the month," she went into the bear's enclosure and was mildly attacked before she could get away. No major harm was done, but the speculation was that the unusual behavior was because of her period. 0 -

Black Bears stalk humans, grizzlies do not. That myth of women being attacked during their period has been said of many animals. It appears to be true of Brown tree snakes in Guam, but no others I know of. 0 -
