that you should stay out of bear country when a woman is having her period? ...trying to decide wether I need to rethink our hike into grizzly bear habitat this afternoon.?.?.?

I believe there is some merit to the story. Bears can smell blood a long ways like any predator and they are one of two land animals that routinely hunt, kill and eat humans (big cats being the other).
But then, I'm a wimp because I wouldn't go walking where there are large bears under any circumstances.0 -
A bear can be attracted to a woman on her period, also human sexual activity can attract bears. 0 -
I read something about that a few years ago which claimed that
1) there's never been a documented attack by a grizzly that was attributed to a woman's period, but
2) it makes sense that a grizzly should be able to detect it.
In your situation, I'd just make it a point to pack a revolver (or whatever you prefer) and be sure to be out of the woods well before dusk, which is when you're most likely to encounter a bear.0 -

Remember they charge with heads down (protecting chest) - heads are shovel shaped to deflect bullets off of their 1" - 1 1/2" thick skulls. Wear track shoes - they'll come at you at 40mph.

I suppose that hiking with a gal having her period would be something like spear fishing with a stringer of speared fish on your belt. Sooner or later a big hammerhead shark will come to sniff you!!
In bear country it might make sense to carry a large T-bone steak in a plastic bag on your belt and if you run into trouble with a bear toss the steak in the direction of the bear and slowly walk away. Probably more effective than bear spray or a small revolver.0 -

I have 2 things:
1) Bears run faster up hill than down, heard this years ago it makes since because they have shorter front legs.

B)You don't have to run faster than a bear just faster than someone in your group. [:p] [:D]0 -
Two more things - Blackys climb - a boot heel or two from a littler higher in the tree, in the nose, sends them home!
The Griz doesn't have retractable claws - doesn't climb (the good news) - but will stay as long as it takes to tear the tree down (the bad news)!

It brings to my mind a future scientific experiment. I may start taking my daughters to the zoo during those times of the month, maybe we will finally get to see some of the elusive animals that are supposed to be in the enclosures but are never seen. 0 -

From what I know about bears they are not that influenced by smell of blood. A bears diet is about 80% non meat and thats usually what they follow. They dont use smell to seek out food, from what I know. They arent like sharks. The rarely eat dead animals like sharks who like to eat dead or wounded seals or fish or whales. Bears like veggies and berries and stuff. 0 -
On the other hand, how do you tell a thousand-pound grizzly you're not in the mood? 0 -

I know it's a little after the fact, but I think that, and I'm not certain, but blackies might get aggressive if they catch the scent earlier in the season, like right after they wake from hibernation, they are hungry and a bit ornery, but not so much now.0 -

I can't speak about steering clear of bears but after having a wife and two daughters, all three of whom were fully sycronized, staying out of the house every 28 days was a fine idea! 0
